I was wondering, based off the new TRO 3145 Mercs, did the Clans have a major breakthrough in VTOL technology that allowed their combat VTOLs to go from 30 tons to 50 tons?

There's a stooper-heavy VTOL in, like, TRO'85, where they forgot to give it the full set of armor locations required for being over 30 tons.

Yes I recall that one, but I have not seen anything for the combat side of the vehicle house that let's them go over 30 tons, unless I have missed an construction rule change. Based on the given stats in the TRO 3145 the VTOL in question can be built at 30 tons using Clan tech, and going with the given info even if there was an increase in top end tonnage the listed weights don't add up to 50 tons.

I believe any VTOL over 30 tons is made using the support vehicle rules.

The Cardinal in the TRO 3145 does not look to be made via the Support vehicle rules since the lay out of the page and how the info is presented and a simple entering of the stats into HMVee lets you build it as a 30 ton VTOL only issue comes down to the cargo/infantry tonnage and even then its' a 5 ton bay versus the listed 10. So no I don't think it was built using the Support Vehicle rules, again for the amount of confusion the two rules sets can cause it would be better for them to take the best of both and merge them into one rule set.

Even so the weight of the Cardinal doesn't come close to 50 tons. It comes out more to 40 tons max. It works well at 30 tons losing only 5 tons of cargo, but I guess if we are getting bigger combat vehicles with VTOLs and not a confusion of the support vehicles as Combat vehicles that is cool.

In Tactical Operations, p378, they let VTOLs do the super-heavy thing, upper limit is 60 tons.
