How long does it take to train a MechWarrior from a person who has never been inside a mech to a MechWarrior considered to be green (Piloting: 6, Gunnery: 6)?

According to the MechWarrior RPG, it takes multiple years to train a newb into a Mechwarrior.

3 or 4 IIRC.

Yep. It's basically a four year college (well, military academy) program.

For my own writing I outlined a Mechwarrior course similar to an aviation pilot's course.

There would be weeks to months of ground school, classes on navigation, diagnostics & pre-operational checks, traffic protocols, etc, all before simulator training.
After a few weeks of simulator training a student pilot would progress to industrial 'Mech trainers to learn movement and controls. From IndyMechs they would graduate to dual-cockpit trainers to sharpen their skills before their first solo run.

After a few weeks learning to pilot a "Mech through various obstacle course exercises, the pilot graduates to weapons.

After a student trains in weapons simulators for a few weeks before taking a 'Mech out to the live fire range, runs firing courses, then participates in duels then field exercises.

as you outline a course for mechwarrior Training i wonder how other personell would be trained.

i also wonder if there would be a General Military academy for all officers, which trains personell for all branches, seperate academys for seperate branches or something in-between.

my idea would be an institution which has general courses for all officers, like strategy tactic and leadership, and special courses for the special branches.

i would also find it interesting how military training and general education(both military and civilian) would be organised.

there should be an institution for military orphans that also would have an elementary school and maybe a sort of cadet academy attached.
id think that after elementary school pupils would transfer to junior cadet academy as junior cadets. after that they would transfer either to an aprenticeship in a craft (when they do not seem to be "officer material") or to senior cadet academy. when being finished with that they would get a specialised military training in the branch they would be serving in.the specialised training could also begin half way through senior cadet academy.

Odd how the Word of Blake was able to crank out the warriors needed to fill their ranks...

indeed.

if i would be given the Task to produce a given number of warriors in a given time (say two decades)
i would try to make contracts with governments, for 75% of the normal cost i would relieve them of their orphans, and care for them at least as good as the government would.
all of that because i have the strong feeling that something bad i have done in the past has to be compensated( or any such credible reason why i would do it).
i would bring said orphans to a planet i own some distance from the worlds they come from, there i would train them as good as i can.
in fact i would really care good for them, as i want them to be loyal to me and my belief. those that are not suited to become warriors would be trained in all crafts and trades needed to keep the planet running, and the factorys that would produce the weapons needed. I think that this is what happend on the hidden WoB bases, additionally to the believers from everywhere that would be gathering there.

All things are possible when guided by Blake's wisdom. Or some Stackpoled crap like that. Maybe the Mandis are chipping skills like Shadowrun. Who knows, who cares, we all know by now that the Jihad was arguably the worst thing ever written in the Battletech timeline, so no point talking further about it. Move along.

Good point...now I wonder if they would have mech driving schools for ag-mechs like they do for truck driving school of today? Or would it be something you would only learn in the military?

there would be agromech-piloting schools.
1. an agromech is as dangerous for other participants of trafic as a truck.
2. ppl that show talent could be hired for the military. agromech-piloting schools would be a preparation for defense, as the glider schools were a preparation for the german Luftwaffe between the WWs.
3. in case of war not only could the agromechpilots be trained faster to become mechpilots, the trainers could also be a reserve for mechpiloting trainers. this would require them to be schooled on mechtraining regularly, but thats a low cost for being able to speed up training quickly.

i think it would be well within possibilities that there would be a "national gard" of sorts, in this national guard there would be agromechpilots that require little training to pilot a light battlemech. they would not use very fast models, and not very expensive models, but thats what a militia is like.
the 15 ton charger and 10 ton warhorse come to mind, quads, as i imagine the agromechs, and relatively cheap.
