If I recall correctly, this was the first battletech novel. It focused on Hanse Davion and Maxmillian Liaos plot to replace Davion on the throne with a duplicate brainwashed to obey Liao.

I also seem to remember that the attempt cost the Federated Suns t housands of lives during the Galtor campaign and that it was because of these actions that Hanse Davion focused his wrath on the Capellans during the Fourth Succession War.

I never read the actual book. Just heard about it. Also heard that it was told from the point of view of Arden Sortek. Hanses longtime best friend.

Can anyone supply any more details? I would get a copy from Amazon but used copies run in the 80 dollar range.

It was, IMHO, one of the best BattleTech novels ever. It really helped you to FEEL the way MechWarriors did. And did a good job of explaining the universe.
