What if the Blackout was planned by the Republic? Seeing as we don't know what happen to many of the WoB elite and their military units...say for the sake of the disucssion that they ended up staying in place and switching allegiance and no one knew other wise other then top allies of Stone...

I've had similar thoughts....basically that the Republic WAS the Blake Protectorate's final shape.

Well...yeah...that's sorta my thought.

Once they realized they couldn't win, they created Devlin Stone to defeat them and rule in their place.

;)

when force and power does not work, try influence and manipulation.

indeed
another idea is that the WoB was created as a demon in the first place, to help Stone to power.

like in star wars: clone troopers on one side, androids on the other side, all secretly caused by the sith.

So when does it turn out that Devlin Stone is actually a genetic clone of Thomas Marik? And did they get the RIGHT Thomas Marik for the sample? The mind boggles...

Ah...he's probably a clone of Hanse Davion...

Thereby cementing the idea that Hanse Davion is the originator of everything in BattleTech...

;)

So Arthur Steiner Davion might be a clone of Hanse, and I think I have seen this plot before, wait...DARK EMPIRE by DARK HORSE Comics with the Emperor cloning himself over and over etc...yeah so original.

It is worth a note than many WoB units are still unaccounted for in the blackout era. Including some scary ones like those dock ships converted to carry mass drivers. Gremlins waiting to come out of the woodwork anytime the canon wants to conveniently destroy something.

As I am moving the Astral Republic forward in time (yes, still working on it) it has been realized that the blackout is due to advanced Blakist malware, which was released as a "fail deadly" WMD into the Inner Sphere's HPG network when the Blakists were defeated in the Jihad. Now the malware keeps bouncing around between HPG stations like a social disease, infecting and re-infecting them as they are fixed and brought online. With thousands of stations throughout human space, and the growing suspicion that Somebody is still actively updating the malware and feeding new versions into the network, it's proving extremely hard to clean up, especially in the less technically adept parts of human space. The Republic's HPG network has been electronically isolated from the Inner Sphere since the HPG War in the 30th century by defensive software, encryption, and so forth, but now isolated "carrier pigeon" stations provide a physical barrier as well. These isolated stations are used only for communications outside the Republic; incoming HPG traffic stops at the isolated station for screening and reading, then the actual information of the traffic is taken to a totally separate internal station and transmitted to the Republic's network. Sometimes the isolated stations get blacked out and have to be fixed, but that's their job; they're meant to take the hits so the Republic at large stays online. Obviously this slows communications outside the Republic due to all the necessary duplication, cryptography, and so on, but that's just the price of doing business in the 32nd century.

I like that idea.

Very well thought out.

A cybernetic intelligence's worst nightmare. ;)

I agree with the two separate boxes approach.
