All of the designs cited below can be found on these boards in the following threads:

OmniMechs of Clan Goliath Scorpion

Nike Pursuit OmniTank

Three OmniFighters, One Engine

The Black Fleet

MA's Clan Goliath Scorpion DropShips and JumpShips

This project began soon after I read through Wars of Reaving. According to that publication, the Scorpions were able to form four new Clusters through recalling their Seekers, plus at least one more Cluster that was raised from 'solahma and former Warriors'. Not to mention the pair of Clusters raised from the (single!!) battalion of Eridani taken as abtakha from Huntress!

This got me thinking . . . if the Scorpions could have raised, equipped, and fielded five new Clusters that quickly . . . why, oh why, did they have just twenty-four Clusters to begin with in their Touman?

Now certainly, the Scorpions are cited as one of the more 'resource-poor' Clans with enclaves on only five worlds (Strana Mechty (7%), Dagda (29%), Tokasha (23%), Marshall (36%), and Roche (83%); Huntress was added later after the fall of Clan Smoke Jaguar). But it makes little sense that they are 'resource-poor'.

"During the Golden Century the Goliath Scorpions would help revolutionize Clan society with the creation of underwater industrial exoskeletons in 2842. Known as "water elementals" to their laborer-caste operators, these suits allowed the Clan to harvest the mineral wealth buried beneath the planet's watery depths, which impressed visiting merchants from Clan Wolf. In exchange for mineral rights to almost all of Dagda's oceans, Goliath Scorpion granted the Wolves the technology behind their diving suits, and used their new mineral wealth to become the planet's dominate industrial power and expand their colonies on Roche and Tokasha." (Field Manual: Warden Clans, page 104.)

Dominate industrial power . . . hardly a synonym for 'resource-poor'. At least in my definition. And they have mineral rights to the majority (perhaps a vast majority, but the text just says "almost all of Dagda's oceans") of the underwater resources of that world.

If they did this on Dagda, surely they at least tried the same thing on other worlds where they had enclaves, quiaff?

But, canon is canon and while it has us shaking our heads, it is what it is.

However, for my own use, I decided to sit down and revamp the Scorpions as I thought they should have been done. Hence this little thought exercise.

Because of their canon 'lack of resources', I have made some concessions. First and foremost being an emphasis by the Clan's leadership on consolidating their manufacturing and logistics efforts. Thus we see five new Scorpion OmniMechs, three new OmniFighters, and an OmniTank . . . all using the same type of ferro-fibrous (or -aluminum) armor, the same comm arrays, the same tracking & targeting arrays, and one of just two types of engines.

Anyways, enough of my rambling. On to the Touman. I do hope that you like what you read and, as always, any comments or critiques are welcome.

CLAN GOLIATH SCORPION MILITARY ORGANIZATION

Based on the concept of mixed Trinaries, Clan Goliath Scorpion’s military is extremely regimented. Each of the four (primary) Trinary types used contains a mix of BattleMech, Elemental, and Aerospace forces, designed around a tactical specialty. The former Specialist Trinary formations were removed from service with Khan Kirov’s and saKhan Djerassi’s reforms of the Touman beginning in 3035. Deemed as too specialized in nature, these Trinary formations were disbanded and replaced with a more conventional mix; however, all Scorpion Elementals continue to receive both high- and low-altitude para-deployment training to conduct air-mobile fast-response operations as needed. The Elemental heavy Guard Trinaries were disbanded at the same time, due to a shortage of Elemental Warriors and a desire to increase overall mobility in the Touman.

The Command Trinary acts as a stable command element for Scorpion Clusters while also retaining a reserve of heavier-weight OmniMechs able to deal the enemy a final blow or respond to a hostile counter-attack. Each consists of a Composite Command Star with 2 OmniMechs, ten Elementals, and two OmniFighters assigned, as well as two OmniMech Stars. All Clusters contain one Command Trinary.

The Assault Trinaries are used to spearhead offensive operations. Each consists of two OmniMech Stars and one Elemental Star. Goliath Scorpion Clusters are assigned two Assault Trinaries apiece.

The Battle Trinary is a multi-role unit designed for responsive independent operations. Assets consist of one Star each of OmniMechs, Elementals, and OmniFighters. One Battle Trinary is assigned to every Goliath Scorpion Cluster.

Finally, the Striker Trinary serves as the reconnaissance and skirmish force of the Cluster. Equipped with the lightest OmniMechs assigned to a Cluster, Striker Trinaries are fast-moving and highly mobile. Each Striker Trinary is comprised of two OmniMech Stars and one Star of OmniFighters. One Striker Trinary is assigned to every Cluster in the Touman.

Organization is identical for all Clusters: one Command Trinary, two Assault Trinaries, one Battle Trinary, and one Striker Trinary. This gives each Cluster a strength of 47 OmniMechs, 85 Elementals, and 22 OmniFighters. As with the Specialist and Guard Trinaries, the Kirov/Djerassi Reforms eliminated half of the previous Cluster types and reformed the remainder to match the pattern above. Uhlan, Cateran, and Grenadier Clusters have been converted into Hussar, Dragoon, and Cuirassier Clusters, respectively.

Organized identically, the three formations differ only in the weight and speed of OmniMechs assigned to them:

Cuirassier Clusters are the mobile assault units of the Scorpion Touman, fielding primarily heavy-weight units, but with a few medium-weight designs. At full-strength, a Cuirassier Cluster is assigned 20 Goliath Scorpion Heavy-weight OmniMechs, 18 Desert Tiger Heavy-weight OmniMechs, 9 Sand Devil Medium-weight OmniMechs, 85 Elementals, 6 Hun Heavy-weight OmniFighters, 10 Zulu Medium-weight OmniFighters, and 6 Comanche Light-weight OmniFighters. Transport is provided by five Scorpion-class Troop Carrier DropShips and one Voyager-class JumpShip. A Warden-class Assault DropShip is also assigned to each Cluster. Cuirassier Clusters have a sustained maximum speed (as a unit) of 86.4 kilometers per hour (54.0 kph walking) and are heavy-weight formations. Twelve of the twenty-nine Scorpion clusters are Cuirassier Clusters.

Dragoon Clusters are slightly lighter and faster than Cuirassier Clusters, fielding heavy- and medium-weight designs. At full-strength, a Dragoon Cluster is assigned 20 Desert Tiger Heavy-weight OmniMechs, 18 Sand Devil Medium-weight OmniMechs, 9 Hooded Eagle Medium-weight OmniMechs, 85 Elementals, 6 Hun Heavy-weight OmniFighters, 10 Zulu Medium-weight OmniFighters, and 6 Comanche Light-weight OmniFighters. Transport is provided by five Scorpion-class Troop Carrier DropShips and one Voyager-class JumpShip. A Warden-class Assault DropShip is also assigned to each Cluster. Dragoon Clusters have a sustained maximum speed (as a unit) of 97.2 kilometers per hour (64.8 kph walking) and are heavy-weight formations. Eight of the twenty-nine Scorpion clusters are Dragoon Clusters.

Hussar Clusters are the fast-moving recon and striker units of the Scorpion Touman, fielding only medium-weight designs. At full-strength, a Hussar Cluster is assigned 20 Sand Devil Medium-weight OmniMechs, 27 Hooded Eaglel Medium-weight OmniMechs, 85 Elementals, 6 Hun Heavy-weight OmniFighters, 10 Zulu Medium-weight OmniFighters, and 6 Comanche Light-weight OmniFighters. Transport is provided by five Scorpion-class Troop Carrier DropShips and one Voyager-class JumpShip. A Warden-class Assault DropShip is also assigned to each Cluster. Hussar Clusters have a sustained maximum speed (as a unit) of 118.8 kilometers per hour (75.6 kph walking) and are medium-weight formations. Eight of the twenty-nine Scorpion clusters are Hussar Clusters.

The reforms included adding three Keshik formations that comprise the Clan Goliath Scorpion Command and seven Galaxy Command Trinary formations. The Khan is assigned the Knife Dance Keshik, transported by the modified Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Command Cruiser Serket. The saKhan is assigned the Deathstalker Keshik, with the Command Cruiser Atropos as transport. The Loremaster is assigned the Eternal Quest Keshik with the Command Cruiser Hephaestus attached.

Each of the Command Keshiks consists of one Command Trinary. At full strength, each Trinary is assigned 6 Goliath Scorpion Heavy-weight OmniMechs, 4 Desert Tiger Heavy-weight OmniMechs, 2 Sand Devil Medium-weight OmniMechs, 60 Elementals, 6 Hun Heavy-weight OmniFighters, 10 Zulu Medium-weight OmniFighters, and 6 Comanche Light-weight OmniFighters; these numbers include the OmniFighters and Elementals assigned to the Keshik’s WarShip. Transport is provided by one Scorpion-class Troop Carrier DropShip with one Warden-class Assault DropShips in support. Two additional Scorpion-class Cargo DropShips are typically carried as well, allowing the Command Keshiks to resupply formations in combat as needed. Shipboard elementals (50 per Keshik) are deployed aboard the Cruiser’s integral small craft complement when required.

Galaxy Command Trinary are organized in a similar fashion, but lack the integral troops assigned to the Command WarShips: 6 Goliath Scorpion Heavy-weight OmniMechs, 4 Desert Tiger Heavy-weight OmniMechs, 2 Sand Devil Medium-weight OmniMechs, 10 Elementals, and 2 Zulu Medium-weight OmniFighters. Transport is provided by one Odyssey-class JumpShip, one Scorpion-class Troop Carrier DropShip, and one Warden-class Assault DropShip in support. Two Scorpion-class Cargo DropShips are also assigned to the Galaxy Command; these ships load additional stores, parts, and equipment that the Galaxy Commander may provide to any of his Clusters as needed.

Finally, there are three types of Independent Formations varying in size from a Trinary to a full-strength Cluster.

First is the Scorpion Shock Cluster. Organized identically to the Cuirassier, Dragoon, and Hussar Clusters (47 OmniMechs, 85 Elementals, and 22 OmniFighters), the Shock Cluster is unique in that it is assigned only assault-weight Dune Stalker OmniMechs. Transport is provided by a Voyager-class JumpShip, five Scorpion-class Troop Carrier DropShips, and one Warden-class Assault DropShip as escort. The Shock Cluster has a sustained maximum speed (as a unit) of 64.8 kilometers per hour (43.2 kph walking) and is an assault-weight formation.

Next are the three Reserve Artillery formations. Each consists of three Stars (15 OmniMechs, 1 Trinary) built around the heavy-weight Desert Tiger E Artillery OmniMech and two Stars (10 OmniMechs, 1 Binary) of Hooded Eagle Medium-weight OmniMechs that serve as forward observers and spotters for the Artillery Trinary. Transport consists of an Aggressor-class JumpShip and two Scorpion-class Troop Carrier DropShips, modified to accommodate one 'Mech Trinary and Binary, respectively.

Finally, there are the five Garrison Trinary. These consist of one Star of ten Nike OmniTanks and two Stars of Elementals. Intended for police and para-military actions, it is questionable as to whether or not the current Scorpion leadership will retain them within the Touman.

The Scorpion Naval Reserve consists of seven WarShips assigned to a single Naval Star (not including the three Command Cruisers assigned to the Khan, saKhan, and Loremaster directly). Assets consist of one McKenna II-class Battleship, two Congress III-class Frigates, two Lola IV-class Destroyers, and two Essex III-class Destroyers. 300 Marine Elementals are assigned to these vessels, along with 120 OmniFighters (36 Hun, 48 Zulu, and 36 Comanche). Eighteen Warden-class Assault DropShips provide additional support.

The full strength Scorpion Touman thus consists of 1558 OmniMechs (47 Dune Stalkers, 300 Goliath Scorpions, 461 Desert Tigers, 432 Sand Devils, 318 Hooded Eagles), 3265 Elementals, 838 OmniFighters (228 Huns, 382 Zulus, 228 Comanches), 50 OmniVehicles (50 Nikes), 10 WarShips (3 Sovetskii Soyuz II-class Heavy Command Cruisers, 1 McKenna II-class Battleship, 2 Congress III-class Frigates, 2 Lola IV-class Destroyers, 2 Essex III-class Destroyers), 39 JumpShips (29 Voyagers, 7 Odysseys, 3 Aggressors), and 238 DropShips (181 Scorpions, 57 Wardens).

Overall, the Scorpion Touman is lighter than most other Clans, with an average OmniMech/BattleMech weight of just under 57 tons (~56.99 tons), but is also more mobile than heavier Clans and far more homogenous in nature (somewhat easing the logistical burden of the Clan). The use of the same front-line OmniMechs in units normally regarded as Second-line or Garrison in nature is a major departure from Clan tradition as well. However, as Scorpion merchants have noted in the past, many second-line BattleMechs are virtually as expensive as front-line OmniMechs . . . it is only tradition that has kept the two segregated for so long.

The Scorpion Merchant Fleet is fairly robust, with one hundred twenty-one JumpShips, approximately one-third of which is normally held in mothball reserve. There are 31 Voyager-class with six docking collars apiece (including twelve in reserve), 63 Odyssey-class with four docking collars each (with twenty-two of those laid up in reserve), and 27 Aggressor-class with two docking collars apiece (which include six in reserve). Four hundred ninety-two cargo and passenger DropShips are available for transport as well (172 of which are laid up in mothball reserve).

And a few thoughts on the Blood Heritages available to Clan Goliath Scorpion and how my Scorpions might differ from other Clans.

Blood Heritages and Houses

Clan Goliath Scorpion differs from the other Clans in how they treat their Blood Heritages. In this Clan, it is viewed as a challenge to 'rehabilitate' a poorly performing Blood Heritage. The failure of one Warrior, after all, does not mean that all who follow will likewise fail. Doing so confers great honor on the Warrior who manages to 'redeem' a Blood Heritage in decline.

Because of this, the Scorpions do not Reave Blood Heritages from existence. Indeed, the Clan attempts to maintain the full one thousand Blood Named Warriors that Nicholas Kerensky decreed was the limit of any Clan. Although not always successful in this, the Scorpions tend to come closer than the other Clans, despite their small Touman size.

Below is a list of all Bloodnames currently possessed by the Scorpions, along with the number of Blood Heritages each name possesses. Exclusive Bloodnames have a full twenty-five Blood Heritages attached to them.
