Two questions: 1. how much support units would be present around the battlemechs?
2. how would the mechs be used in the time of the SLDF?

i imagine that the SL would first use mechs as small units that would be under the direct command of the supreme command, they would be attached to whatever

units would be in need of mech support.
At this early time the vast majority of mechs would be rather light and the main force would still be Tanks and infantry. Mechs would be used mainly to cross

terrain that cannot be crossed by Tanks, for flanking and flank protection.
At some point regular mech units would be created, but how would they be organised?
I think at this early time mechs would be far from being the Kings of the battlefield.
I see them being used as part of a combined Division. I used a german Panzerdivision(1943) as a template.
i added: 1. mechregiment, 1 grenadier regiment 1 air/space support regiment 1. MASH company.
i changed: regimental organisation from 4+4 companys to 3+3+3 companys to match Battletech better.

combined division, list of companys
early version: vees are all ICE,air support only conventional fighters, mainly light mechs.

Dropships and jumpships are assigned by central command when needed

Source: http://lexikonderwehrmacht.de/(german),as the various divisions changed numerous times I had to decide subunit by subunit wich version to use.

You have to remember that when the TH started deploying mechs widely they were still using primitive vehicles. Even primitive mechs were a fairly major jump in abilities over primitive tanks.

In the early days I see a mech unit made up of a single mech, say all Mackies for example, with armor being support units. Heavy tanks and arty for fire support, and to form an anvil. Vtols and hovertanks for scouting and flanking. Wheeled armor would be more for urban defense/attack in my mind. All of the above would have infantry attached, if not organic to the unit.

This basically follows what is outlined in the various SDF division descriptions. I figured early units would be a little more mixed, along the SLDF dragoon regiment lines.
