Overview:
The earliest "BattleMech" in recorded history, the U.S. Army's M-6 "Knox" was built for anti-terrorist operations in the Middle East. Small and slow by modern standards, the Knox was State-of-the-Art in 2016.
The last surviving Knox is in the Royal War Museum on New Avalon. Originally believed to be a non-functioning prototype, Com Star records recovered in 3065 show that even though there were containment issues with the early fusion reactor, the 'Mech was actually used in combat for forty-nine years.
Capabilities:
Mounting an M-242, 25mm "Bushmaster" autocannon, made popular on the Army's Bradley fighting vehicles and the U.S. Marine Corps' LAV-25 Piranha, the Knox had excellent range against lightly armored targets. However, the M-242 was ineffective against heavier combat vehicles, such as the Soviet-built tanks that were prevalent in the Middle East at the time. The "A" variant of the M-6 solved this problem by mounting a twin-tube M-220 Advance T.O.W. II missile rack, with fifty total loads.
Battle History:
Used initially in Tehran against Iranian insurgents in 2018, the Knox proved unable to stand up to armored vehicles, and was also too slow to keep pace with Armored Cavalry Regiments. The type "A" redesign, with a twin-tube missile launcher and slightly better speed, allowed the Knox to keep pace with Mechanized Infantry, and provide a punch to back the ground-pounders in places that larger armored vehicles could not go.
Eventually retired in 2067, the Knox had completed over three hundred missions against armed opponents in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, with only seven of these early 'Mechs being lost to combat.
The last surviving M-6, an"A3" model produced in 2034, is on display at the Royal War Museum on New Avalon.
Variants:
The original M-6 was produced from 2016 to 2019. The upgraded "A" model, with better anti-armor firepower, was introduced in late 2018, and continued production until 2052. The "A1" model, with an upgraded Electronic Warfare system and communications package, was introduced in limited numbers throughout the Knox's production run, due to its lack of weaponry. A jungle warfare variant, labeled type"A2" was produced for the North Korean Campaign from 2031 thru 2035. The only other known variant was the "A3," which was up-armored, and replaced the "A" models' T.O.W. missiles with machine guns. This variant was used for Urban Operations.
Notable 'Mechs MechWarriors: Command Sergeant Major John Herbst -
CSM Herbst served with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Iranian Campaign. His Knox, the Goldbrick, was the first 'Mech ever credited with a vehicle kill, when he destroyed a Soviet-built BRDM-1 personnel carrier with his 25mm cannon.
