Contest #10 will be to create 4 versions of the same mech that could have been put into the following TROs: 3025, 3055, 3060, 3075. You will also need to create one additional mech--if you started by using an Inner Sphere mech you will need to create a Clan version, and vice-versa.

Any tournament legal equipment is allowed.

Presume cost is not an issue.

Deadline for entries is 2359 EDT on 14 October 2011.

==Overview:==
     When the Federated Commonwealth Alliance was agreed to in 3022, the Lyran
Commonwealth was already working on the creation of a new BattleMech known
only by its codename of Project Mirror. Archon Katrina Steiner shared the
plans with Hanse Davion, and the First Prince agreed to finance the design's
full production run as a show of good faith.
     The resulting BattleMech was christened the Myrichthys. The name comes
from the genus encompassing snake eels: aquatic creatues that exhibit some of
the qualities of each of their namesakes. The name is appropriate for the
joint project between the two nations, as the Federated Commonwealth hopes to
also emphasize the qualities of each Great House.
     The Myrichthys was ready for field testing in late 3024, and though it
has so far demonstrated itself to be an effective trooper 'Mech, there seem to
be no current plans for it to replace staples such as the Steiner Zeus or
Davion Enforcer. Even so, the design appears to mesh effortlessly with both
existing BattleMechs.

==Capabilities:==
     The Myrichthys's right arm ends in the muzzle of a large energy weapon,
while two smaller energy ports appear underslung on the left wrist. A fourth
port is mounted in the center of the 'Mech for additional protection. This
dedicated array of energy weaponry, coupled with the very thick armor of the
design, afford it a longevity not shared by most other units of its weight
class.
     On the other hand, the 'Mech also mounts a fairly large missile rack in
the left breast, which provides additional punch at longer ranges. The
Myrichthys also has ample heat sinks for its payload, something MechWarriors
are sure to appreciate.
     Though it boasts only average speed for a design of its weight (and lacks
jump jets), the thick hide and solid mix of long- and short-range weaponry all
but guarantee effectiveness at any range.
     Despite perhaps one of the finest-tuned gyros in the Inner Sphere, there
were reportedly some unexplainable balancing issues when installing the heat
sinks in the prototype Myrichthys's legs. This phenomenon plagued the
Commonwealth technicians long enough that they instead elected to mount the
sinks in the torso instead, which mysteriously eliminated the issue. The
consensus seems to be that the issue was caused by the particular actuator
packages used in the legs, but that theory was never proven.

==Variants:==
     The MYR-1R is the original production model of the Myrichthys, and in
keeping with its codename, is often abbreviated "Mirror" in combat situations.
It sports a particle projection cannon in its right arm as its main weapon,
and two medium lasers in the left arm to support it at close range. At longer
ranges, a 15-tube long-range missile rack provides additional firepower, and a
single rear-mounted medium laser protects its back.

==Variants:==
     The Myrichtys was a natural choice to test some of the Federated
Commonwealth's cutting-edge technologies on, including even the expensive
endo-steel internal structure. Though the frame of the MYR-3S was rebuilt
around the same engine and actuator packages of the MYR-1R, the heat
dissipation system was upgraded to double-strength heat sinks and the weapons
were equally upgraded to extended-range and pulse varieties.
     The PPC in the right arm was replaced with an ER model, and each of the
trio of medium lasers were replaced with pulse equivalents, shortening the
range but increasing the accuracy and damage potential. The only weapon to
remain intact was the long-range missile launcher, although cellular
ammunition storage technology was implemented in the torso to protect the
chassis against lethal ammunition explosions.
     Lastly, a Guardian ECM Suite was added to disrupt enemy electronics.

     By 3060, the Myrichthys was beginning to fall out of favor due to newer
models that either packed more firepower or more speed. Lyran Alliance
engineers considered relegating the design to the scrap heap after the
Alliance withdrew from the Federated Commonwealth, but in 3062, the Lyran
Alliance was looking for a testbed for its new light fusion engine. Realizing
that this technology could recreate the Myrichthys in a way that would
distinguish it from the old Federated Commonwealth models, production of the
MYR-5T began shortly after creating the first few light fusion engine
prototypes.
     The 300-rated light fusion engine was considerably larger than the old
Pitban 240 used in previous variants, but it provided the 'Mech with more
speed with only minimal sacrifices in firepower. The biggest loss comes in the
right arm, where the ER PPC was replaced with a standard-issue large laser.
Reaching out almost as far are the two now-extended-range medium lasers in the
left arm. The medium pulse laser in the 'Mech stomach and the Guardian ECM
Suite of the MYR-3S remain, but a C3 slave computer was also added to the head
assembly.
     The long-range missile rack finally received a bump up as well, adding an
Artemis IV fire-control system. CASE is still in place to prevent any
ammunition explosion damage from spreading.

     The Myrichthys was selected to be one of the first Lyran 'Mechs to test
out the recently acquired stealth armor technology in 3075, and the MYR-7X is
the result of that decision.
     In order to combat the heat trapped by the stealth system, additional
heat sinks had to be installed throughout the 'Mech. This quickly ate up vital
tonnage and space, requiring the engineers to switch out the light fusion
engine for a similarly-rated Vlar XL. The Artemis IV FCS and C3 slave of the
MYR-5T had to likewise be sacrificed, as they would not function correctly
with the stealth system engaged.
     Other sacrifices in firepower came in the form of the medium lasers,
which saw the two ER models in the left arm condensed to a single medium pulse
version and the removal of the center-mounted pulse laser altogether. However,
the ER PPC of the MYR-3S makes a comeback, replacing the large laser of the
MYR-5T. CASE has virtually become as standard as the machine's LRM rack,
although a nasty ammunition explosion can now render the 'Mech a mission kill.

     When the Myrichthys was first unveiled during the Fourth Succession War,
Wolf's Dragoons managed to gather enough information about it to include it in
a report back to the Clans about new 'Mech designs of note in the Inner
Sphere. Based on this report, Clan Wolf set out to create a IIC version at
their Auxiliary Site #2.
     The resulting Myrichthys IIC took the original design, added some weight,
and provided it with a devastating symmetry. Each arm terminates in an ER PPC
with an extended-range medium laser underslug and set a bit to the outside.
Similarly, the original long-range missile rack was kept in place in the left
breast but also replicated in the right breast. Double-strength heat sinks,
ferro-fibrous armor, and an endo-steel internal structure are among the other
changes and improvements Clan Wolf made to the design. A 350 XL fusion engine
provides the Myrichthys IIC with more speed than MYR-1R as well.

Conventional wisdom usually states that light battlemechs are best used in the recon role. However, I would argue that scout mechs are actually outclassed in this role by combat vehicles such as hovercraft or VTOLs. I would also argue that using *any* mech in a purely recon role ignores the core concept of the Battlemech as an elite shock unit.

It is, however, possible to design a light mech that is fast enough to keep pace with heavier units, while at the same time featuring generous armor and a weapons array that simply outclasses most other units in its weight range (Mech or otherwise). Take, for example, the LNC-3R Lancer. It is only half the weight of the Po tank, but it is 50% faster, has more than twice as much weight of firepower, and is arguably just as durable. All this is achieved for a relatively modest increase in unit price compared to the Po. Such a Mech would be a deadly threat to virtually any combat vehicle. More importantly it would simply beat the crap out of most comparable light mechs.

The Lancer would have a role similar to the Commando but it would be a much tougher nut to crack. Unlike the pitiful Wasp or Stinger, other mechs are unable to simply ignore it, which takes some pressure of its lancemates. Its durability would allow it to approach medium or heavy opponents and inflict serious damage with accurate salvos of laser fire. Successive generations of this mech would employ increasingly deadly technology, so that by the 3070's a single Lancer would be carrying firepower equal to an entire lance of Po tanks. A comparable Clan model would be even deadlier, and could easily outshoot an upgraded Inner Sphere mech of twice its tonnage- a truly frightening proposition.

In short, the Lancer is a tough but flexible light attack mech. Not too bad for a "mere" 30-tonner.
