This may be a work in progress, as we see what works and what doesn't, but I want to start out with some ground rules:
Quote:
* I am the only person who is allowed to start new topics, although anyone can respond to topics I start.

* The contest is open to any registered HM Forum member.

* No off-topic posts here, please. The few threads we have will be crowded enough without them. If anyone strays, I'll simply delete the post. No hard feelings.

* Confine posts to existing threads to only 2 types: Entries of designs that meet that thread's criteria, and Comments concerning any designs in that thread. Others will be deleted.

* No smilies-only or "Me too"s. Again, we need to be able to read through these designs. If you have constructive, specific comments on a design, that's fine.

* Suggestions for new contests should be made either by PM'ing me, or responding to /this/ thread only.

* I will determine the winner of each category/contest, in accord with my public and/or private criteria. I will most certainly try to be fair and consistent.

* All designs should be by /you/, not just copies of a design that someone else posted and you liked. I'll have to trust you on this, but if I determine that a winner posted a design originally designed by someone else, it will be removed from the winner's circle. If I think it was intentional, I may prevent the person from entering other contests.

* In posting a design, you should post only the Text TRO, in CODE tags for readability. Also include a LINK to the data file, which you should upload to the User Submissions page. After posting to this page, you will receive a link, which you can then include in your post.

* If you have to add or correct any information in a posted design, please EDIT it; do not post again. It is to your advantage to post everything correctly land completely the first time.

* Designs need not include fluff, in fact I prefer that they don't. They will /not/ be judged on fluff, at least unless I specifically say so.

* If your design is chosen as a winner of a contest, I will then notify you and request that you submit a complete design, unchanged, design-wise, but with fluff added. Again, you won't be judged on the fluff, and you don't have to be a professional writer, just give us the best you can about usage, etc.

* If your design is chosen as a winner, and /if/ you have original artwork or a photo representing a design, you should include it when selected as a winner (NOT when submitted), as I will add it to my web site along with the design. Again, your design will /not/ be judged in any way on the picture, and not having one is no big deal. But if you've built your winning design, it would be nice to share with others.

* The winning design will be posted on a Contest Winners page on HeavyMetalPro.com, giving you credit for the design. An HTML page will display the design, and a link will be given to download load the design.
We'll start out with this, and see how it goes. The rules may change, but if they do, I'll let you know.

Now to figure out what the first contest will be. ;-)

Well, I was going to point out that your contests are too broad with not enough specificity but it seems as though you've already noticed that.

I didn't want to limit designs /too/ much. And after all, /I'm/ learning with this too. ;-)

Hey Rick if you want some more traffic for the Design contest area, I have a Locust contest going on in the design forum you could move here. it seems to be doing pretty well.

Well, I'm not sure it's a good idea to design a contest around a specific, winning 'Mech. :-]

I love it how few people can follow directions.

Anyhoo....how 'bout only one entry per person per contest, at least until a winner for thround is chosen. So you post once until a winner is selected, then if you think you got something better THEN you go post your other design.

I'd prefer to let people post again, if they have a better design. No sense to hold back until /after/ I declare a winner. ;-)

Wow, Rick, when I saw your name up on the "Latest Post" thinger by the forum heading, I figured you must have posted your own design on the thread.

yeah but if you got 20 entries per person, it would seem to get rather complicated.

I am a little confused (easily done :) ) are you after the fastest design of each different chassis? Mech, wheeled, tracked, VTOL, etc beacuse none of the designs are any faster than the first two, at a quick scroll through anyway. Maybe you should have specified a minimum ammo requirement if it is suposed to be battle-worthy :-?

I didn't specify, and expected vehicles, hovers and even a VTOL. I did /not/ expect Hydrofoils, but it's very interesting that they are that fast. So I stated that if a Hydro won, I'd probably have another contest for non-naval vessels. Only because the Hydros would be of limited use on most maps, while most others would be better (although hovers certainly have a problem with woods).

My /intent/ was to simply find the fastest design, within the requirements stated. Many of the others will no doubt be in a future contest.

Maybe. But Level 2 requires a ton of ammo, and for this purpose, that's probably enough. I don't think too many people will put Ultra-20's on a design that's supposed to be speedy. ;-)

One shot all-or-nothing on a machine that can nab a +4 modifier no problem? Sure, why not! ;)

Could we get a "realism" element for these contests, or maybe actually make cost and/or BV a factor?

Because the results are virtually all the same, minimal combat value, and very unlikely to be encountered in the BT universe.

That is why I liked to my Blizzard thread because I have used it in combat and it has proved it's mettle.Unfortunately because of my still limited computer skill I may be disqualified because I am unable to download the HM file from my computer to link it

This makes things a /bunch/ easier for people, including me, to look at. And in fact, I'd have to ask you for the file before I could select you as a winner, anyhow.

So please go back and upload a file for your designs, if you don't have one and Edit your post including the URL for it.

Ok, Rick, I don't know if anyone has brought this up yet, but I think that with these "Improved 'Mech"-style contests, it should be some sort of "limit one per customer" type of thing. Because frankly, having one or two people (*cough* Major Takahashi *cough*) clutter up the contest with their designs is just unfair. You should pick one and stick with it. And everyone should get an equal shot at it. I mean, really, Grey or Burning Chrome or Marwynn could just flood the contest with their designs, and they'd win just on sheer popularity; but you don't see them doing that. I think, really, it's just an issue of fairness.

I see your point. Although I think that people will still pick the one design that they feel is most improved, and entering a bunch of designs doesn't make any one of them any better. Still, I'll take a look before opening it up to voting, which should be before too long, and if I feel it's required, I may limit the number of entries.

Are Omnimechs with multiple configs still okay? The real improvement is in the base chassis, and the configs for the Wargs just illustrate what you can do with those improvements.

Yeah, that's fine. But if you did that same thing for a Dire Wolf, and a Stormcrow, and a Hellbringer, and a Kit Fox, all in the same contest, that would be unfair.

I think multiple configs, or multiple designs, are all fine, but remember, only one will win. If I had an Omni with multiple configs, for /this/ contest, I'd only post the one I thought was best. Otherwise, people might glance partway through and quit reading. ;-)

I'd like to add a contest for some aerospace equipment, both small craft/fighters and large craft like WarShips. Any ideas for those? I really hate to do the biggest/most expensive kind of thing again, although it might be interesting to see just how many billions of C-bills can be spent. Anyhow, I'd like a few ideas for these, so please post your thoughts.

Well, one thing you can do is look through all the official designs and see if anything is missing. Like, how about a destroyer transport? A destroyer with enough docking collars to handle a regiment's woth of dropships and the speed and firepower to defend and/or escape?. Or a light carrier. something like a Fredasa but with an extremely large flight deck. Or maybe a special forces/marine assault craft. Build it on the smallest possible frame for a warship. It is designed to jump into a hostile jump point and seize installations. What about.... hey, here is one, How about an assault shuttle. Fast as a fighter and capable of carrying a 100 ton battlemech from orbit. Or maybe something from the pre-battlemech era. A brigade transport. A warship that carries two regiments of infantry and one of armor, plus support units and the combat shuttles to handle them. How about the best RAC equipped fighter? What about a cheap point defense fighter? Or treat it like a military contract. For example:

"The AFFS is putting out a contract for a new whatever it must have a certain tonnage and/or weapons and/or speed and a certain cost."

Of course this means that most of these will have to be voted on. If you need any more ideas or help let me know.

Here's another one, how many support craft do we see? Almost none. Where are all of the combat cargo transports (that is fleet resupply ships, you know not cargo dropships but cargo warships) or the refueling ships. Where, o please tell me where, are the hospital shuttles/dropships/warships? What about civilian ships? Where are the luxury crafts of the rich? We only have one passenger liner, the Monarch. It can't be the only one. You would figure that there has to be luxury shuttles and dropships. Or even, during the days of the Star League, luxury Jump capable ships, either built off of a Jump Ship engine or even a Warship engine. You know that somebody like a Star League Bill Gates would have his own luxury shuttle that would take him to orbit where he would get in his own ship (with a warship core) and travel to the Jump Point in luxury and not have to depend on jump ships like the rest of the rift raff. What about more space station designs?

They're all located in various files on my two computers.

Yeah, but what about seeing how everyone else would design such things. I'm sure you're not the only one. Let's see how good everyone else is.

Maybe a contest for Liason aircraft and one for transports.

Those all sound like good design ideas; but what would the criteria be for selecting the winner?

We vote. Aren't you already doing that for the Best Refit contests?

Sure. We'd need to tie down the specs pretty well, so we aren't pitting destroyers against warships. ;-)

Easy enough to do. You can tie it down pretty good by selecting a minimum/maximum tonnage. Among other things.

By the way, I would like to see more done with vehicles and maybe a protomech contest or two.

So as i mentioned in my PM to Rick, how bout a contest for Pre-Star League designs... this sets it in the era where the Successor States are still in its early years...

1. Must be I.S. Battlemech
2. Tech LVL is 1 with a few exceptions
3. Tech LVL 2 can be used but only certain ones
-Endo Steel
-Ferro-Fibrous
-DHS
-CASE

(you can only use ONE of the LVL 2 item to represent adv tech for the Star League design)

4. Fluff is mandatory with a solid concrete story (im sure there are many great writters here) as this will count for most of the points award.

5. At least ONE variant should be made!

Thats my idea for the next contest

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe what we need here, to take the load off me, to get things done more quickly, and to insure fairness, is a group of judges? Which could vary with the type of design, like some people are really into fluff, and others, not so much.

Thoughts?

Like 2 judges? 1 to give "thumbs up" for combat worthiness and the other "thumbs up" for fluff wriiting? I can assure im not the best at writting but i do like reading the history of how the design came to be... while at most i like designing combat worthiness... id say say limit the judges to 2 cause if you have to many "chefs in the kitchen" it could cuase the contest to lag because of the impartialness...

Just a small note on the judges thing, I would suggest an odd number so that there can be no ties.
