So as i mentioned in my PM to Rick, how bout a contest for Pre-Star League designs... this sets it in the era where the Successor States are still in its early years...
I've added the contest, but you don't say on what basis the winner will be chosen? "Best" design selected by judges? Highest BV? Most interesting? Anything without "numbers" will have to be a subjective decision.

Let's get this decided real quick so I can add it to the description!

Might i suggest Best/Most interesting design by Judges since "numbers" are not really a factor, its about ingenuity...

Not trying to pry at it but in contest #10 states lvl2 only... here Rick you posted the winner with this file...

http://www.heavymetalpro.com/contest_10_winner.htm

It displays lvl3 tech using the Variable Range TC... but i see in the contest thread as lvl2 w/o the VRTC... file typo?

Ok...so the basic idea is that this BattleMech is supposed to be pre-Star League.

But what we are writing is either the Star League version of it, or showing a varient for it that is Star League?

You simply write up the fluff about it and include a variant as well...

Yeah...but if it is an Age of War design, how do we explain why it has Star League tech on it?

You do have books briefing Star League Era Mechs right? It should give you some ideas on writing up the fluff...

Yes. I have all of that.

My question is, if this is an Age of War 'Mech, HOW is it supposed to have Star League technologies?

Where are you getting this "Age of War" from?
Quote:
Bahamut ZERO suggested this idea for a contest:

A Pre-Star League designs... this sets it in the era where the Successor States are still in its early years...

* Must be I.S. Battlemech
* Tech LVL is 1 with a few exceptions
* Tech LVL 2 can be used but only certain ones
- Endo Steel
- Ferro-Fibrous
- DHS
- CASE

* You can only use ONE of the LVL 2 item to represent advanced tech for the Star League design.

* Fluff is mandatory with a solid concrete story (im sure there are many great writters here) as this will count for most of the points award.

* At least ONE variant should be made!

* Post your entry in Text TRO format, using CODE tags. Also include a Link to the Uploaded design for reference. See rules for more details.

Winner will be the design considered the Best, Most interesting and Ingeneous, as determined by a yet-to-be-elected panel of Judges. For a change, this one is /not/ about the numbers. ;-)
This mentions nothing of "Age of War"

I fail to see what you are getting at or just plain underminding the whole context of this contest...

Plain and simple, create a pre-Star League mech with fluff... if it needs to be more clear, The 1st Succession War was never thought up of... this contest sets it in the time when all the Successor States have been born... the infant stages... along with the Star League and its army...

(Anyone care to step in and enlighten MD what this is all about?)

Historically, the Star League ENDED the Age of War. So any Pre-Star League 'Mech is, by defination, an Age of War 'Mech. ;-)

But that really isn't the point of my question.

My question is, how are we supposed to explain having Star League technologies on 'Mechs that are supposed to be around BEFORE the Star League when such technologies were not yet created?

All I can see is as a refit. I was just looking for clarification on that.

*shrugs*

I'm guessing based on your silence that answering questions about your contest is not one of your priorities. Based on that, submitting a 'Mech is not one of mine. I may if I have time. I may not.

*shrugs*

Have fun.

Still, you may be in the best position to answer.

Honestly, i dont see how much clear i can be... i answered to the best of my knowledge but i cannot (not that i am with holding any info) give a definitive answer to his question(s). All that is really asked of the contest is a pre-Star League design w/fluff... if he is looking for a time frame (like 2500) to represent his design (should he have one) i dont know exactly... IMO, its plain and simple, design a mech with one of the following LVL2 items to represent early Star League progression... write a up a fluff about it... can i be any clear than that? Quite frankly, this idea just popped in my head, its not like i thought long and hard about it... i threw in what might be a possible contest to play with, so not alot of details was drawn up... just a simple idea... so now i am put into a position, which i get cornered in, to answer him up front... i feel belittled and now the contest who was suggested by me feels demoralized...

Two contest ideas I'd like to see played out:

1. Furthest jumping combat-worthy 'mech (L3, and then possibly L2)

2. 'Hardest to Kill' battle-worthy L3 'mech - although this one might be open to a bit of interpretation.

How about a contest for what I like to call Bug Hunters? Bug Hunters are any category of fast tanks that are designed to hunt down and exterminate Light 'Mechs.

Another idea I have is to have a design contest for a 'Mech/Vehicle company. The contest would entail a history of the company and would feature 4 designs. The four designs would be 1 tank and 1 vehicle from the 3025 era, and then the upgrades of said designs for 3065. The fluff for the company would be just as important as that of the units. And, of course, every company would need a logo!

Perhaps now that BV 2 is out, it might be necessary to have some of those BV contests again. Though I might suggest separate contests for clan and IS designs.

Well, since I spent my free time this weekend designing small craft for my custom faction. I vote for the small craft contest. With fluff. I've always liked writing the fluff for stuff.

For instance, I now have designs for a KR-75 shuttle (upgrade of the KR-61 one) that has more cargo and more passengers. A cargo shuttle that hauls 50-60 tons. A passenger shuttle that carries 48 pasengers on short orbital hops. An assault shuttle that carries 2 12 man battle armor squads or a platoon (one of mine) of space suited marines. (I never liked the Battle Taxi, which by the way has 2 6 man cargo bays that have no doors on them. Are you sure anyone ever boarded a ship from one of those?). And a longer ranged, fewer passengers, but nicer accomodations passenger shuttle with a yacht variant for trips in from jump points. Next I work on the jump platoon, 1 or two tanks, and mech landing shuttles.
