As an extension to my previous contest for a similar "unit", in which a Hydrofoil took the honors, I'd like to have this contest for 'Mechs only. The specs are similar, but I'm allowing Level 3 here, to provide for 10-15 to 'Mechs as well. Price is no object; these are hit-and-run experts:

* Must be a BattleMech.

* Design must be made using HeavyMetal Pro.

* Must have at least 20 armor points.

* Must have weapon(s) capable of producing at least 4 points of 'Mech-scale damage, for a minimum of 5 turns.

* Can be a Level 1, 2 or 3 design.

* Can be Inner Sphere or Clan technology base.

* Custom weapons or equipment are not allowed.

* Extra points will be given for originality.

* In case of ties, extra weighting will be given to lower cost.

* Post your entry in Text TRO format, using CODE tags. Also include a Link to the Uploaded design for reference. See rules for more details.

Lordwolf, I was amused when I saw you posted a design almost identical to mine. The only significant difference was you used single heat sinks and I used double - meaning yours is cheaper. Now you've gone cheaper still. (Why did you go quad? I did it because I had plenty of crit space and the image of a crab-like 'Mech scuttling along at 300 km/h amused me.)

Mine was based on a design i posted a while back (Even used the same name but different model #)
while the origional was a quad too it was at 15 tons. it wasnt until after i posted it that i noticed yours so i changed the 'style' of the Mech (from quad to armless) which i think will make it a bit more survivable on the battle field.

PS i have used the origional `15 ton version in a game with 3 other players and found myself the biggest target (one opponent got the others to wok with him just to take me down) and they were all using mechs that weighed in twice as much as mine. by the time i was taken out there was only one mech still able to fight.

To be honest I have a few problems with how these two contests are turning out. It seems too much is going into the speed category and not enough into battle-worthiness. I know my mech design in the last contest, as well as a few others, like the Halo, could be much more combat effective in actual missions, but didn't have a chance because they didn't min/max like other units. Also, all the units are pretty much the same if you really look at them, only thing that really changes is maybe a few point of armor or a ER Small traded for some ER Micros. I personally didn't get any joy in designing this unit, and I know I would never play it even if given the opportunity.

Maybe for future contests have multiple criteria that must be mech that will prevent min/maxing and encourage creativity? Even having a battle royal with all the mechs in one big melee would help prove which one is really the best?

Oh well, I'll stop ranting.....

Well, I think some measure besides 'just how fast can it go' would be good, for future contests. Perhaps cost, BV, and other factors could weigh in on this? I dunno... it would seem pretty easy to just munch out, like we're all doing right now. :D

That is why I posted a link to the thread that contains my Blizzard omni-mech unlike most of the junk posted here I carries the maximum armour load on its 25 ton chassis and 5 tons of pod space and still tops out at a 30 hex move I have used this in a number of combats and it has proved its battle worthiness

Actually with the effectiveness of my designs mine is probably more accurately termed as munch assuming by munch you mean a design that achieves optimal efficiency on the battlefield...BTW under those circumstances I consider the term to be a complement.

Conceived during the return trip of Operation Serpent the Nekekami or "Spirit
Cat" as it was soon called, is a bit of an enigma. The rumors surrounding the
Spirit cat are numerous. From mechwarriors saying they materialized out of thin
air and destroying a base to reports of a single Spirit Cat wiping out a
companies with out being hit, and while there ii no validity to these rumors
the capabilities of the Nekekami are impressive for a unit so small by todays
standards. An electronics marvel (and a techs nightmare) allow the Nekekami to
virtually vanish on the battlefield. Originally designed on the chassis of a
old Stinger the original Nekakami was a less than impressive unit to pilot, It
had a decent movement profile but it wasn't till the Coordinator say the unit
and heard of the Nekekami's leader sacrifice that he decided to turn a small
development fee to improve the design. Shortly after the unit went into Black
Ops" status and all records have been closely guarded. What is know is
information that has been gleaned from rumor and from hearsay.

==Capabilities:==
Capable of speeds up to 226 Kph the Nekekami can easily close to a favorable
position or disengage to get a better position. Utilizing weapon systems
provided Clan Nova Cat to both the star league and Draconis Combine most of
the electronics are clan produced along with the 6 Extended Range Micro
lasers. The blending of the Clan electronics and the combines C3 Slave have
produced a unit that can scout and call in artillery fire and indirect fire
with greater accuracy then before. Originally the Nekekami mounted a
Multi-trac targeting computer but to improve battlefield survivability the
Multi-trac was removed for the Null-Signature system. The Null system allows
the unit to virtually vanish on the battlefield (leading to a glimmer of truth
in the rumors). One interesting feature is the addition of the Turret assembly
mounted on the units right shoulder. The light tag unit is mounted there and
has a full 360 firing arch.

==Battle History:==
There are currently no Unclassified engagements with this mech.

==Variants:==
The only Variant considered is rumored to lower the sped by replacing the XXL
with a standard XL. Weapons and electronics load will remain the same unless
the weapons get upgraded to act as a hunter/killer/escort for the Standard
Variant.

==Deployment==
Current deployment is sketchy at best. Units have been reported with the New
Star League, the Nova Cats, some Draconis combine units, and a pair of special
ops lances have been seen with the Eridini Light horse and First Kulahn
Irregulars. But it is figured that at the end of the last production run less
than 24 units are expected to be in existence.

Went a little slower (dont like the price tag) But think this fits the combat worthiness bill.

The origional was a quad so it had less armor per location (and had slightly more armor) I switched to Armeless for the fewer locations to cover and the level 3 rule concerning arm hits on armless mechs. and has an ER-Med and ER-Small laser but after finding that using my speed advantage it made it hard for me to hit my targets as well so i switched to the Med Pulse for the -2 to hit bonus.

Here is my submission, the Freebirth Folly, AKA The Flashback..
Have to love Heavy Ferrofibrous. I have two versions. The first is built with slightly more survivability, as it has lower speed and over two tons of Heavy Ferrofibrous armor. The second is pure speed with only one ton.

The Flashback is a 'Mech designed for scouting and pure austentation. capable
of reaching speeds in excess of five hundred kilometers per hour, it has been
accused of being made for pure 'taunt' factor. It's hands are capable of
performing rather lewd gestures (though few know of this amount of
articulation) and it uses the Jade Falcon's laser heatsink technology to
perfect effect, both dispersing the heat from it's dual heavy lasers and
single extended range gun, but also taunting as it pratically leaves a blurry
incandescent streak of light behind it in it's wake. No trueborn warrior would
pilot such a risky device but freebirths (with a strange sense of humor) love
the 'Mech for it's potential to mock their opponents.

You can get even cheaper by using patchwork armor, and I think Quads should be considered faster because they can lateral shift, useful for dodgeing obsticals and keeping a high Movement Modifier :wink:

Well, I was tempted to do armless, but that would defeat a fun part of the fluff text. :) I was tempted to do patchwork armor, but one ton of Heavy FF is just slighly over 20 points, saving a /lot/ of weight.

I can just imagine some soused up freebirth whipping by some Firemoth, giving him the finger in passing, and leaving the little pest in his incandescent wake.

I think I'm going to award this one to lordwolf for his Greyhound Va, and Armless 'Mech capable of over 572 km/h (over 355 mph). His design and js's are basically identical, but even though js's is a tad (very small tad) cheaper, lordwolf posted his armless concept first, recognizing that it is more difficult to target as well.

This design meets the criteria of 5 damage and 20 points of armor (+3), and as lordwolf mentioned, the Armless design gives a bit more armor at the other locations, as there is no need to armor the arms. I will say I was very impressed with the speed of other designs, that while a bit slower, dealt quite a bit more damage out. I actually prefer some of those designs, but the Va met the spec, so I'm declaring it the winner.

Would lordwolf please forward me a final design with fluff ( of some kind) incuded, so that I can post it as a winner. I'll take care of copying the design to the User Submissions page, to make it available to all as well.

Thanks all of you for participating. I'd really hate to try to hit these guys! And for hit and run, they can't be beat! ;-)

I should note that in the process of determining the winner of this contest, I found that on the TROs, Clan 10 ton 'Mechs reported the MASC crits and tons incorrectly at 0 each, when they both should have been 1. The correct 1 crit and ton are calculated into the weight, but they weren't shown correctly on the TROs. I've changed the program, and the next release will have the fix. Nothing like some extreme designing to show something like this up! ;-)
