4/25/04 [edit] Okay, this is part of this test. I am now adding a poll, a nonsensical one, just to see how it works with a bunch of previous posts. The idea being that if I post an original thread, have people post their submitted designs, then set up a poll for people to vote on the one they like best, that it would all work.[/edit]

This is a test, for possible future use in the contest forum. The idea is to have a thread that people can post designs to, and then /after/ the posts are in place, I'd come back and /add/ a poll, so that people here could vote on their favorite. I know you can't (or aren't supposed to be able to) change a poll once there are votes, but I'm hoping that I can /add/ a poll after there are a bunch of posts.

Anyhow, for the test, feel free to respond here, as to what types of designs you would like to be able to vote on (best fluff, most improved Unseen, whatever), and after a number of posts, I'll add a poll, and we'll try voting on it to complete the test.

Sound like a plan?

Well, since no one else has responded yet, I will. ;-)

How about a contest for the best & most original fluff on a design, where posters here could vote to decide the winner?

someone else posted an Idea for highest cost, that might work. Another idea would be to see who could make the most oddball mech with only canon equipment, like a slow hatchet wielder with LRMs and AC-2s for weapons. Or, an Urbie contest, to see who can make the most creative Urbie (Urbie LAM!). Another idea is to see who can make the best, most logical refit of a canon machine. My last idea (and there are a lot) is to see who can make the best fluff for a RS:U mech. Then we can vote on best fluff, and maybe, just maybe, get TPTP to post it on BattleCorps and canonize it. Of course, that's REALLY wishful thinking, but it could happen. Just a thought.

How 'bout a "Most Ridiculous Design" contest? You know, where one could post a LAM with an HGR?

How about a contest with the Fastest mech WITH maximum armour and a certain minimum weapon throw weight.

How about best low-tech BattleMech (ICE BattleMech)?

I don't have any ideas, except im tired of the most best highest stuff, b/c they typically end up to be munchy as hell with minimal canon feel to them.

What about the GarrisonMech Challenge: best BV/Cbill cost ratio for a set weight (eg. 45 tons) under a certain Cbill limit (eg. 3.5M)? Do those numbers stand about right?

How about something entirely subjective like "Best trooper 'Mech". The variety of designs submitted ought to be interesting.

How about vehicle designs for newly colonized worlds. Requirements would be cost, combat ability, and its ability to be used in a secondary non combat role.

Okay, continue your suggestions as to the types of contests you'd like, especially if they're ones that members couuld vote on, instead of the max/min/fast/slow whatever designs. Also, please vote on this topic, so I can see how practical having you vote on a topic that already has lots of designs posted to vote on. ;-)

This sounds highly cool to me.

Other possible ideas for contests:

- Best pack hunter (as in a 'Mech designed to be used in lance-sized groups, like the Blitzkrieg, etc.)

- Most useful 'Mech with lowest damage (but no e-warfare only units) per ton ratio

How about a best fitting design after an existing model from a different game or story? something like taking a ATAT from micromachines and making equipment and fluff for it? (Have a lot of this stuff) :)

No, b/c vehicles from other genres do not translat well into other genres.

I think that it would be best if we conduct this like someone approaching a defense contractor looking for a new design. Rick would be the person looking for the design and all of us would be various "defense contractors" trying to win the contract. We get the basic specs that are being looked for (ex. 25 - 35 tons, minimum speed 5/8, 3 tons armor, non omni, LV 2) and we post our designs. The only posts allowed are designs, and each person may submit two designs each. Then once a set time has passed you lock that thread and start two new threads, one that has all the designs listed where we can vote on which design is liked best and one thread to vote on the fluff text. Then Rick takes the top 3 designs and once again puts them up for voting for the top design. May sound a little complicated, but I think it would work.

Fine, but right now I'm still waiting for the winners of the last 3 contests to send me their designs!
