When I was about 11 years old, World War 2 was still a fairly recent thing for America. I was fascinated by the history, and built 1/35 scale military models from that era as a hobby. At that time, I once saw a photo of Erwin Rommel, taken in a decisive battlefield moment as he was holding a map and pointing to give a command. As it turned out, Tamiya made a figure set with a German officer that looked much like Rommel in the photo, so I tried to duplicate that picture. I worked on that figure for days, as if somehow if I could get it just right, I could get a glimpse into Rommel's mind at that moment of decision, giving an order that he knows will cost soldiers' lives, but hopefully the victory will make their sacrifice meaningful. That realization about the realities of war and leadership was sobering, especially for a child, and I suppose that indicates I was successful. YMMV.
