First there was an uncontained failure in Chicago, and no, I'm not talking about the Bears this football season. 767 on takeoff had an engine go confetti mode. The plane looks like a probable hull loss, but at least everyone got out OK.

Read that again: debris thrown up to half a mile. Wow.

Then in Fort Lauderdale, a FedEx MD-10 had its left wing gear collapse on landing. Plane's probably a loss, but the crew and cargo got out OK. Check out the video of the wing tank going up...

Definitely not the best year for Boeing accidents, for sure.

that Chicago incident seems to have happened early enough to stop the aircraft. a little later and the plane would have been to fast to stop, jet to slow to take off.

Exactly. It happened in that time window where they were still on the ground and slow enough to stop. Even a few seconds of acceleration later might have been too late, and we'd be reading about the body count.

understandable.

statistics say flying is the safest way of travelling.
its just that when things go wrong just once its mostly many people die.
so it could happen a single screw that brakes causes a headline. worldwide.

when there would be a headline for every 1000 road accidents worldwide however,
we would probably stop flying altogether because of fear of dying on the way to the airport.
because that would be almost 3.5 headlines DAILY.

http://www.who.int/gho/road_safety/mortality/en numbers from 2013 published October last year

News on the 767: internal fatigue cracking in the turbine disc of the affected engine. The fact that it was an internal failure (and thus not visible to surface inspections) signals a possible manufacturing defect. Stand by for a lot of grounded planes, and I imagine this is the kind of thing where they'd have to do radiography, which makes the downtime that much more expensive. They might just be better off replacing all the turbine discs in that lot...

Does Samsung own stock in Boeing?

it was not a battery-failure...

Samsung's problem most likely has to do with them using batteries that wouldn't pass real safety testing, probably from some cheap-arsed Chinese contractor. In fact, it's worth noting that Samsung used a special exemption to avoid having those batteries tested in the USA, most probably because Samsung knew up front that they didn't meet standards. But that has nothing to do with the fact that Boeing's been having a bad run of luck with its planes this year.

Of course, it could just be a statistical anomaly. After all, there are literally hundreds of Boeing planes in the air worldwide, every moment of every day. When your brand name has such a large market share, it stands to reason that a similar proportion of accidents will happen under your label.

I must correct you, part of Samsungs batteries for the ill-fated S7 (1/3-1/2) are produced by a Chinese contractor. The rest is produced by Samsung. AFAIK the problems occurred only with Samsung produced batteries.
