Two F/A-18's from Miramar collided over the Pacific on a training flight. One was able to land at Miramar, the other went SPLASH; the pilot ejected and was fished out by SAR from USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). Close call.

Ships at sea get nervous when they get even within a few miles of each other. With BVR missiles and all that, it makes me wonder just how much of all the close flying that planes seem to do is really necessary.
