A plane carrying Brazilian soccer team Chapocoense crashed in Colombia. The plane declared an "electrical emergency" before going down, indicating some kind of technical failure, and the weather may have also played a role. Only a handful of survivors, and almost the entire team was killed. :(

When you think about how much sports teams travel, it's amazing that things like this don't happen more often. MLB has 30 teams playing over 160 games each every year; that's probably a few thousand flights just for MLB alone, every season. Scary stuff.

It is a little of a shock that it hasn't happened more often.

Bad news gets worse: plane ran out of fuel due to improper flight planning, pattern of negligence by the airline, people being arrested.

This happens too often. We just don't get to hear about it. Fuel's expensive. You can't get obscenely rich spending money on such "frivolities" as extra gas.

When it happens in Canada, you get this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider
But this was bad math, not being cheap.

Looks like several breakdowns compounding each other. Like most tragedies.

Didn't something happen to another South American team and they spent like 72 days trapped on the side of a mountain because of pilot error and bad weather?

that did happen, they believed they were at the west side of the andes in chile, when in fact they were almost at the east side.
the guys that they sent to get help went westwards and had to overcome some serious obstacles, but finally the survivors of the crash were rescued.

Thought teams like the military didn't fly a group all together to avoid such an event?

that applies only to the transport of VIPs.
for example the president of the US is never in the same plane with the VP

Quite a lot of the British Olympic Team traveled on the same flight when going to and from the Rio Olympics. If that flight had gone down it would been hard choice for the news editors who gets the headline. Andy Murray, Jessica Ennnis-Hill or about a 12 more.
