I just got an email from a certain person on this board that had a "present" attached to it. The following message is brought to you courtesy of Yahoo's built-in email virus scanner...
Quote:
Virus"W32.Beagle.AO@mm" found.
I've notified the person in question via PM. I just thought y'all might want to know, so y'all can check your own systems and keep your eyes open.

More info can be found on this particular bug here...

Thanks for the notice, and the tactful way of handling it. Unfortunately, with the advanced viruses these days, the person the email /appears/ from is not always the machine that actually has the virus. :-(

Heh. I had an interesting conversation with a coworker today.

Some less virus-aware coworkers had my company's network in knots, but she, of course, wasn't one of the guilty parties. After all, she'd uploaded the latest virus definitions when IT sent out the panic alarm.

It was baffling, though, one person kept sending her e-mails every minute, offering her "new prices" on some topic. She had 400-odd e-mails from this person. Everyone in my CubeSpace agreed the spammer must be infected. We called IT and had the Diseased Person blocked out of our MS Outlook In-Boxes.

Further casual conversation (after IT's elite shock troops had left the vicinity) revealed an interesting fact: my coworker had actually opened one of those baffling e-mails and clicked on the "new prices" attachment but, gee, no file opened.

[flashback]I couldn't say much. I'd been much baffled by a similar e-mail 2 or 3 years ago. I kept clicking and clicking and...Well, the IT shock troop hadn't quite pimp slapped me, but he had ripped me network cable out of my machine.[/flashback]

I called IT and they ran a virus scan on my coworker's machine. Whatever she had unleashed, the new anti-virus patch had caught. The virus had not disabled the anti-virus software. But it was interesting staring into that looking glass.

While I'm not the person Shades of Grey is referring to, I got several e-mails and phone calls from people that received an e-mail that contained a worm that was forged to show my mordel.net address as the sender.

My machine is clean so I know it didn't come from me...

Yeah, according to McAfee Dispatch, the damn thing spoofs the sender's address. Needless, to say, when I looked in my Bulk folder and saw one from a name/address I didn't recognize, with *no* subject and an attached .zip, I didn't even give it the benefit of the doubt.

Your Right Rick, I got my PC back from repair 'bout a month ago, First E-Mail I had was off someone on the Board, it had a Virus in it as well..........which I did get rid of in the end........

I contacted him to tell him about it, as I guessed it was sent without his knowlege and he did not even have my e-mail address on his system so It was 'spoofed'........very strange.

Still No Harm No Fowl.

Dave.

I use web-based e-mail almost exclusively, so I don't keep any addies in either Outlook Express or Outlook.

I've been lucky, virus-wise. I've caught a few Trojan horses, but only a couple of viruses. They were minor ones that Norton caught immediately.

You're welcome. And I know that, which is why I made the post here. It was probably spoofing off someone who had a bunch of users from this board on their mailing list.
