I can't speak for everyone, but ... while I love playing 'Mech-only, when I'm building my forces I often get sidetracked into making up support units. And I don't mean LRM carriers ... for example, if you're using field-guns or tube artillery, then there has to be something towing them around & humping shells, right? If you're supplying troops by air, what's the cargo mover? And so on.
Added to that ... a pile of MW:DA units, including some which frankly are never going to be used in CBT as they are. Which immediately suggests that a little knife & clay action might be the solution ...
Okay, here's four for ... Wednesday?
From left to right - a half-track suitable for pulling artillery. Converted from the Shandra scout, with the rear wheels removed & replaced by tracks taken from the MiningMech, halved. Spaceman_Spiff gets credit for inspiring this, although his version uses full tracks on both sides - this looked better balanced to me. I tried to deal with that horrid cockpit cage by filling it with clay; next time I'll just replace it.
Next, hands up all of you with more MASH units than you could ever be bothered using? Well, pop the back half off, then slice the cabin through half-way up. Then cut the chassis into thirds lengthwise, and discard the centre portion. Glue the sides together, put the cabin half on top, and ... voila! Havy truck suitable for moving shipping containers or massive blocks of balsa wood.
Next, the hover jeep. Base of a Tamerlane strike sled, with a cockpit made from a MiningMech claw, and cargo load of another cunningly carved balsa block. Cheap, cheerful, and the body of the Tamerlane is being converted into a minisub.
Lastly, the VTOL cargo carrier. It offended me having a number of SM-1s ... I tried converting the bodies into planes, or choppers, but nothing worked. Then I recalled things like the DA Hawkmoth just balance themselves on a column of hot air. I grabbed the backpack off a Crimson Hawk, and ... voila! That honking big engine is obviously there to keep the jets powered up, and the doors on the side sure look like cargo doors. Plus, you can make right- and left-handed versions!
Comments sought as always,
W.
