I thought about the landing gear thing after I had posted the picture. And yes, re-entry would rip off the doors, gear and would probally cause the DS to tear itself apart from the stresses and heat coming up through the gear wells ala Columbia
Well, yes and no. This is a powered ship, not a falling pod. The atmosphere, and high friction created by entering at high speed, is a great benefit to reducing speed with low fuel requirements. But it's not the only way to enter. Given enough fuel, a powered ship could settle down from space to ground like a feather. And appendages such as landing gear and doors only become a problem at high speed.
Now, in the interest of fuel economy, a Spheriod (more than an Aerodyne) DropShip might come in pretty hot, gear retracted, to slow it. But at some point, it's going to use engines to change attitude point up and go in for a powered, slow, landing. That point could be quite high, depending on conditions.
For example, when the space shuttle or other entry pod is coming in, there is no concern for defense or offense. It may be worth the extra fuel for a Spheroid ship to come in exactly as you've pictured, at low speed, ready at any moment to bring weapons to bear or beat a hasty retreat, if enemy forces are encountered.
