I just had a wicked idea... I'm going to try to get the blade to look like Damascus steel! Wish me luck.

u'll need luck at that scale.

would be easier to give the blade a "hamon" IMHO, and maybe more apropriate

In swordsmithing, hamon (刃文, hamon?) (from Japanese, literally "blade pattern") is a visual effect created on the blade by the hardening process

I have a tip for that. I'll post data when I'm not on my work internet connection and firewalled to hell and back

I look forward to it Chainsaw. I was thinking of using very thin (watery) paint on an oiled blade surface, but I am very open to advise. :D

Cobay I'll look into it as a standby. Thanks :toast:

Link I used to have is a dead link... but basically you mix the canned marbling agent (As in to do a marble effect) that you can get at Michaels/Pearls with a good metalic oil based paint a few hews darker than you'd think that you want in a small pot, shake it up REAL good and lay it on thick. Then you drybrush a light coating of a color lighter than you think is good over it, trying to match the "splotches". The author recommended going across the blade, as that's what the swords tend to do in real life.

I used it on a few 28mm heroics, and it looked BAD ASS, I might still have the miniatures around here somewhere. I know i threw out the stuff I used in my last "Paint-pocalypse" cause it wend bad, like so many of my GW's in the old hex pots...

Oh and use a disposable brush, that marbeling agent can do nasty things to them....

Yep. It's a new totem heavy 'Mech for the Draconis Combine, hence the samurai-like appearance. See also Rokurokubi, Hitotsune Kozo.

Kar I agree with you about Dark Age stuff normally, I even agree to some degree in this case. However, I think the Shiro fits the style of House Kurita beautifully. It is a cool looking Mech.

So my technique for doing this will probably cause a scandal but hey it worked

I used an "essence of BEAUTY" eye liner brush. It's flat angled rigid brisles I thought would work well. Formula P3 Cygnar Blue Highlight (from Privateer Press) watered a bit. The final ingredient is... pizza grease :spiny: . Yes I said pizza grease. I was sitting here painting up minis, had a plate with some Za on the table & I saw the grease pooling on the plate when it hitme that water floats on grease. so I gave it a shot. Got a dab on my fingers smeared it on the blade & painted on the blue. brushed it till I liked the waves & preying the paint will set & not rub off after I seal it.

I am not a fan of mechs with melee weapons, they just don't fit in my opinion. I can see battlearmor carrying them, but not mechs. The style to me isn't there, sorry. I am not worry about where the mech came from, just that the pictures/artwork don't look like mechs to me, but more fitting for a Kurtia battlearmor style. Do you see what I am getting at?

Completely understand. To me Melee weapons on a Mech are a waste of tonnage & space. The Naginata could have been dropped to increase the AC2 to a frakking Gauss IYAM :ohplease:

What did you mix with the gold paint to get the yellow gleam yet still have hints of gold?

melee is the great equalizer. Physicals HAVE no technology level, and 16 points that's GUARANTEED to go into a leg is a powerful thing. So is 2 chances at a 1-in-6 headshot. I agree that melee WEAPONRY is often poorly implemented, but you gotta admit a hatchet in the back chart when you have an XL engine is gonna get your attention!

(All melee weapon equipped mechs should move at LEAST 8 at a run, and preferably jump too)

also quote me now: "That is the NICEST paintjob on the UGLIEST mech I've ever seen." If it was a 28mm scale golem or some kinda robot, i'd be fine with it. but as a mech... it just doesn't "fit". Not with the universe. I mean as a 5 story tall piloted fusion-powered death machine.

And what happens to all that while I move and blast away from range? I seem to recall a powerful melee weapon dying hard on the fields of Crecy and Agincourt and thus ending the reign of the mounted knight in armor. Sure you have a high damage weapon but you have to close to use it, meanwhile you are either going to take damage that could prevent you from using the weapon or the mech carrying it dies.

Also what happens if I target that arm or the weapon it self? Aimed shots are pain, but they can and have ruined many a days...

That's right out of the bottle Kar.Shining Gold from Games Workshop.

I fire at you from range and use the above mentioned 5/8+ speed to hopefully close. Either you will withdraw from the feild of combat or eventually I will get close. The whole time i am hopefully returning fire.

Which is why no military force since Agincourt has dedicated even a second thought to melee weaponry or tactics. Ever.

You seem to think I'm advocating bringing a knife to a gunfight. Far from it. I am advocating bringing knives (plural) AND guns (plural) as well as many FRIENDS with knives and guns to said gunfight as possible. Physicals are a GREAT equalizer in a fight. Locusts and Wasps CAN'T force a piloting check without one. Hatchets are neat. I don't advocate them as primary weapons, but they are certainly worth having if you can squeeze them into your platform. Plus the ability to physical someone on the kick chart when they are 2 levels above you is as surprising to the enemy as it is refreshing to you.
Quote:

Again, if i'm doing my job properly your "aimed" numbers blow. you are running or jumping, and I am too. (or i'm "all up-ons" as the kiddies say, and have accomplished my job) Those modifiers alone when added to the Gunnery make "aiming" a bad idea.

Like I said. Hatchets cool, get one of them instead of a second large laser if you can, but only if you have the speed to catch something. Otherwise be slow and have lots of guns. Either way, preferably bring a few friends, and make sure your numbers are the least attractive to get shot at.

I think I will try and get a bottle, looks really good. I though you had mixed yellow and gold together.

I like Citadel washes now. I don't know what they did, but it seems to know where the joining lines are, and just pools there now! Well the Black & Blue do anyway... red, not so much. But as Meatloaf sings, "Two outa Three ain't bad!"

even for modern rifles there are bajonetts

at WWI someone thought that a good bombardment would render the enemy so defenseless that they could be overthrown with bayonetts alone.
they did not even give the soldiers ammunition. the result was a massacre.

there were some cases that were far later than Agincourt where melee weapons were used, sometimes with success(i just say the bajonet-charge at the little round top)

and do not forget that untill MUCH later than agincourt the number of shots u could fire in a battle was very limited, mostly the tactics was to fire a volley and then attack with melee weapons/bajonets or, later, to exchange a few volleys when the troops were nearing and then use the bayonetts.

Bayonets are there to turn rifles into pikes, great to stuff human wave tactics and cavalry charges, but it does nothing to stop machine guns. Volley and maneuverer, is just what I was saying, why would I let him even get close to use that pike his carrying when I can keep falling back or run around him?

I personally don't see mechs as knights, to me they are walking tanks, nothing more, so giving them melee weapons is not practical, I say leave those things for the "fluff" games on Solairs 7 where the flash and coolness factor is there to keep the masses happy awed.

And so far all we have done is list exceptions to the rule, arms do not issues swords a line weapons anymore, they have all become ceremonial, relics of a "more civilized era". And Bayonets are now used for crowd control or cutting wires out on the battlefield and there are better tools for the latter job.

So are you going to do up anything special on the base, like rocks and grass?

i would suggest concrete/rubble as this mech would make most sense in build up areas( at least the melee weapon would)

I have Grass (flocking) & sand or Sand & grass (flocking). Not much in the way of Flocking really.

Oh and I also have Glue Grass & sand... you know to change things up a bit :suave:
