I've been doing some modeling again. This PLS truck is a refinement of my Warthog utility truck I posted a couple of years ago IIRC.

Okay nice, BUT, what you built we call the LHS or the M1120A4, which is nothing more then a cargo HEMMT with a LHS (Load Handling System) and the flatracks in place of the cargo bed.

The truck is still the same over weight of the HEMMT
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q= ... yF-JwkUFnA

The PLS :

http://www.oshkoshdefense.com/products/17/pls

Offers more, given it can carry more, 16 tons vs 13 tons. Has better handling via the CTIS on the tires, which the LHS doesn't have. The additional axle allows for better turning ability and handling in terrain such mud and snow. The over all ability of the PLS to carry more and being a purpose built vehicle, NOT a retrofit like the LHS means it works with less issue.

I spend my days driving both and can say that the PLS is a better vehicle. I do like the artwork and you have gotten it done, but if you want it correct add a fifth axle at back of it and lose the CHU system aka the Container Handling Unit, it is a POS and breaks more then it works.

I talk it, from the step ladder and the long wheel-base between the middle sets of rims, it doesn't really go off-road?

well it does go offroad id say, just to a somewhat limited degree. or: offroad yes, heavy terrain probably no.
but all you need to get a route passable for this usually would be one crude pass with a bulldozer.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yes it's intended to be off-road capable Goose per the SV rules, although the ladder step is in an awkward location since it could get pushed back into the tire. Maybe I should just make th3e driver climb up the tire?

Karagin your input is appreciated. I think a fifth axle is in order given that container has a 20 ton capacity vs. the 1 carried by a real PLS truck, capacity 16 tons. As for the CHU, what else is there to use? The reason I added it into my design was so that I didn't need to place a container on a flatrack. One of the main points of the container system I developed way back when is to avoid adding attachments to the containers to transport them via different modes. I wanted necessary container handling equipment to remain with the handling equipment, not the container. I tried designing a container with the lifting point for the hook on it but couldn't make it work.

The truck can go off road with no issue. It does really well on rough terrain and handles well. I spent three out of four deployments driving on first two all over Iraq and just this last one around a good chunk of central Afghanistan. It can handle the terrain.

The flat racks M1077 series can handle containers, they come with four lockable knuckles that hold the containers on to the flatracks, then the hook arm picks them up and we then place on the trailer M1076 8 ton trailer, which the M1074 PLS w/crane or the M1075 PLS w/o crane can then pick up it's own flat-rack with a container, connect to the trailer and go off to deliver them as needed. And it can still reach top speed of roughly 55/60 mph on the highway and round 40mph off road.

That is fine, if it works for you, real life the darn things are pain, they break or a part wears out and you no longer can use them, until fixed. I would rather have the container either have a built hardpoint for the hook arm to pick up or it placed on a flat rack, cause that way I can either drop it or have it unloaded and grab the racks for other uses once it is off.

Primary role of the PLS truck is to haul ammo for everything things from small arms to rockets.

Unless told otherwise, I think I am just going to post my trucks to this thread as I get something I like.

Here is a light utility vehicle I've done. It is, of course based on the Pinzgauer, unfortunately I cannot figure out how to down a decent compound curve with Sketchup so it's very blocky. I have posted pics of this basic model before, but I've done a lot of work to it so I thought I post it again.

blocky is ok, when a vee is made out of flat parts putting everything together is much easier.
and armor plates usually come flat.
in the fluff to the leopard dropship they even mention that curved armor was lostech for some time.
protecting a vehicle with an improvised armor can be done by the troops, as long as the surfaces are flat, just cut the pattern and bolt/weld/glue the plates in place.

Just thought I'd share some more pics. Ive done some more work on the PLS truck, and added a crane. The other truck is a large hauler I've been working on longer than the PLS truck. First the PLS truck.

Image

Image

And now the heavy hauler. The platform does not show it yet but there will be a slide-out rail system so a 'Mech is supported across its entire width. As I envision the vehicle a computer will control articulation to maximize stability. The vehicle will also be able to extend its length, via the telescoping 3-axis joints to adjust for stability issues and carried loads. The bed will also be able to stretch. For improved maneuverability, besides the 3 segment articulated body, all 14 wheels will be steerable, which would allow the truck to crab to one side as it moves forward without turning the vehicle.

the connection between the middle 3 and the rear two axles is not really needed, i have seen wood transports that were only conecting the truck and the rear 4 wheels with the wood only, in this case the connection could be done by the platform only. that way the complexity of the joint could be avoided. following the KISS-principle i would suggest a telescopic platform that has several suports that slide along about 3 double T beams, two of wich are connecting to a ball-joint/swivel mount each, the front swivel mount would sit on the center of the truck, wich would otherwise be an ordinary truck like the one on the top of your last post, the other would rest on a six wheel trailer wich would be conected to the truck by the platform only, the steering of that trailer, as well as the movement of the rear joint would be controlled by the same computer that controls the supports on the platform.

He is going for more of HET type of vehicle, Heavy Equipment Transport has an interesting trailer setup and config. Also the way he has the inter axis stuff is similar to some of the 50s designs the US Army did consider, also very similar the to Gamma Goat vehicle.

Thanks for the comments guys, they're always appreciated.

Referring to the Heavy Hauler, as I see it the truck has no trailer, the 3-axle and aft 2-axle bogies are integral parts of the vehicle, just as on the cargo beds of the Gama Goat or the Mk.48 LVS truck.

Although I am not entirely satisfied with the platform layout I do see it as an attachment on the top of the vehicle rather than an integral part of it as you suggest Coba. The 3-axis joints are more than just trailer hitch type connectors between the bogies, they provide steering via hydraulics, or something similar, they provide structural strength to hold the vehicle the sections together, and they're conduits for power connections. Hope that explanation helps show what I'm looking for. :D

myomer-bundles?

i see what you are up to, but i see one problem: when u have a three segment vehicle on top of wich u have a platform the platform can only be conected to the vehicle at one point, because the distance between the conection points would vary when the platform is connected at more than one point. maybe a solid conection at one segment of the vehicle(likely the second one), and one or more sliding supports elsewhere that take weight, but are no solid connections? the only problem left is that, when the supporting part moves down the platform still has to be supported somehow, maybe the supporting point could rest on a triangle, the base of wich is the frame of the vee, the other sides would be hydraulic cylinders. that would need a fast computer to avoid breaking, and then there is a problem when the vehicle is going round a curve, the support point would have to move sideways, in exactly the right time. hard to achieve, but possible. a fascinating piece of engineering that the service-crews would hate because every little problem with the control would mean repairs, then the complexity likely means lots of maintenance...

btw: when u want to make tha vee working within the rules the only way(i think) would be to give the single sections tracks, and go level 3, as a 200 ton tracked vehicle it could easyly move a one-hundred ton mech, and with xl-fusion engines and a supercharger it could go 2/3[4], but maybe it would be better to houserule it...

Coba I'm thinking a large heavy support vehicle.

Ok I've exported some pics of my 8x8 HEMTT analog for your enjoyment. Of course, this truck too is a work in progress.

FYI I've also posted some stats for this truck and the PLS truck on the non-combat vehicle board.

Ok. I think I'm satisfied with the light utility vehicles, the so called Hog Series. I think they're finished, at least until I get so other projects finished.

BTW, the Hog Series is posted in the design archive.
http://www.heavymetalpro.com/forums/vie ... &hilit=hog
The only change is the van model adds to seats which would only reduce the cargo capacity and the cost would increase a little. I think I need to do a couple trailers for the Hogs.

First the van model:

Please, no more Gamma Goats! That was the biggest piece of junk since the M551 Sheridan. I once had a wheel come off a Gamma Goat. They are aluminum. It landed on the far side of the AutoBahn. Scared a German in a Mercedes about half to death.
