I must warn you all that after many occasions of threatening to possibly consider perhaps making plans to actually think about stripping the paint off some of my minis to paint them better I am now actually looking at maybe doing that next week sometime.

The primary reason for this drastic change in my policy being that today, after forgetting about it many times, I have actually dug around in my mother's pantry at her house to find a couple of mason jars to put the pine-sol into.

So before I undertake this earth-shaking course of action (esp. with my sole and very garish looking Hermes II) would somebody tell me... do I just pour the pine-sol into the mason jar straight or should I cut it with water? :)

I pour it in straight. And I hope it is Lemon Scent Pinsol. I have never used it but I've heard regular pinsol can gum up the old paint.

Agreed, no cutting the pine-sol. Put your mini in the jar first, pour in pine-sol until the mini is barely covered, and wait.

Also agreed on the lemon-scented. It's what I use, and it also doesn't make me want to retch.

1 batch of pine-sol seems to be good for at least three minis, although I'd guess at some point it wears out.

The guy who painted the minis before I bought them from him, used a primer. Made the paint come off in a sheet-type gum, not too bad to deal with.

Thanks. The black and purple Hermes II meets its doom tonight then.

If the Pine Sol doesn't meet with you satisfaction check out the thread entitled "What do ya'll use?". There's some very good suggestions and info there. It's gotten a bit old so you'll have to look for it on page two or three. Good luck.

So for using pine-sol to strip paint you have to let the mini soak untill when? All the paint comes off or just for s certain amount of time?
I'm planning on stripping a bunch of my older minis and not sure how to go about it.

I let mine soak for a minimum of 24 hours. That usually takes care of it. But it will take some work with a toothbrush to completely clean it. Resoak if necessary. I once forgot about a pewter mini I had soaking, it was in the bath for 3 weeks. The shine was gone, it was a dull grey after that. I mentioned it over at the CBT board and was told not to worry. The solvent in the PinSol, after 3 weeks had etched the metal a little more, that's all. The paint will hold better on that etching than it will on the shiny bright minis.

I actually forgot and left a whole bunch of minis in pine sol for more than 6 months and they were dulled but otherwise ok... Reg. Pine Sol does gum up a little, I thought lemon did too, but I don't remember specifically if I tried lemon... eitherway yes get some old tooth brushes with strong dish soap to help loosen gum.

Also I have found that epoxy and superglue will loose their adhesion in pinsol so be ready to have your minis fall apart... and remove all old glue before you put them back to gether or they will just fall apart again after you just repainted them.

Also make sure you put a good primer on... before you could /kinda/ get away without it, but the dull lead/pewter (depending on age) did not hold my acrylic paint at all... and I resorted to the epoxy primer coat that I should have had in the first place.

good luck

Usually 24 hours should be fine. Use a toothbrush to scrub the minis. Don't forget to wear latex gloves or your hands skin will start to flake off. :frown: This will be a good time to take out your dental picks to clean in the creases and joints. You will need to re-glue all the pieces. If it doesn't all come off at once, you can throw it back in for further soaking. You can also use oven cleaner to get paint off the minis, use in a well ventalated area. 8)

It's the smoke... Bad for the paint job..... I prefer sand-Blasting. That gets all of the old paint off.....

The trouble with petrol is that if you ignite it the heat would melt the mini whether it is plastic or pewter in fact plastic would ignite too. :o

Well, its a good thing it won't hurt the minis if I leave them in pine-sol another day. It seems I have no old toothbrushes around except for the one I'll be using on my teeth in the morning.

You mean I should've bought Lemon Pine Sol and not the regular? Durn. Oh well, good thing I have some extra toothbrushes laying around(or can get to some anyways.)

Regular pinesol works fine. I use the albertsons cheapie knock off.

fill a glas cup with some pinesol, plop in mini's, add 'sol until mini's are covered.. let it sit for a few (2-6) hours, then pull out and scrub the stuff off inder a rinse in the bathroom sink. (sometimes this is enough, usualy not) this keeps the "gunk" of solvented paint from getting too thick, and gives me a chance to eyeball the mini's former layers of paint. (current record, an altas with ZERO pannel lines on mini when recived that had no less than 9 coats of paint on it!)

This process is usualy repeated two to three times before paint is removed. The plus side is using this method I seem to be able to "dip" plastic mini's with no discernable damage (they become "sticky" for a few hours but "dry" up in a day) Most people talk about plastic mini's being unrecognizable lumps after the 24 hour soaks.

I figure the paint went ON in layers (if the painter was any good), it oughta come off in layers too...

Only if you want it to take longer than it should. It should peel off as one piece.
Then it's back to paint shop..... :)
