Okay lets see what you guys can come up with for improving the 3050 base line Javelin JVN-10P mech. You can revamp it as much as you feel needed or less, but the cost can not go over 4 million Cbills. All Inner Sphere tech of the 3050 era is allowed.

OK, Karagin, I'll bite.

First, while I like the -10P's conservation of missiles, when its runs out, it runs away. It needed a laser. A large laser was the best I could do with all the other improvements I was going to add (I was going to give it an ER large laser, but the cost limitation required the lesser laser; but I still increased the damage curve and sustainability).

Second was the armor. While speed is one way to avoid being hit, nothing beats more armor. I gave it an extra ton. This at least improved the armor in all locations.

Third was to improve the conservation principle. I stripped the SRM-6 and ammo and replaced it with two more Streaks (you limited me to 3050 or I would've replaced both launchers with Streak-4s). But 50 rounds for two launchers that would only fire when there is a lockon was inviting an ammo explosion. Increasing the launchers while leaving the ammo alone improves the possibility of lockon and ammo expenditure.

Now, all of this required the installation of an XL engine (I know you guys hate these things on lights, but I had to find the tonnage somewhere) and Endo Steel structure. To offset all that heat generated by the large laser and additional Streaks, I changed out the single heat sinks for double.

So: Yeah.

As a raider, a Javelin makes a pretty good ash tray: Running around in the enemy rear with only ammo weapons is a pretty bold challenge to doctrine.

With all the new shiny out, the classically bad survivability can be addressed: Find some room for a CASE, and trim the ammo endurance some.

Being in someone elses' Back 40 typically means shooting up convoys of supplies; Which, in turn, don't shoot back much. Given that, it's a shame to burn SRM ammo on such. Small Pules make fine work of Yokel MPs and the canvas armor typically seen over top of LRM creates. It seems funny, but it conserves the SRMs for bigger things.

SRM-4s don't strictly have the throw weight of a six, but the it's ammo bay seems deeper. Feeding two launchers with one ton of ammo isn't conductive with lugging Infernos around "just in case", but the addition of the two lasers, never-mind the CASE, were deemed priorities.

A proper raider has head and leg-mounted guns, but Javelins just don't have 'em, and this is just a field mod.

Interesting designs. Both tackle the same concept but from different angles. I think we could or would see both making a showing as the fighting against the Clans moved forward, prior to the advancements in weapons tech happening.

Mixing the two together in a lance or company would cause a lot of interesting moments for the enemy and further cause him to have to put more effort in keeping his lines from breaking or have more troops detailed to rear security.

In my 3035 games I usually run two Javelins usually two JVN-10F although sometimes one JVN-10N and one JVN-10F.
I never really liked the JVN-10P so here is my attempt at re-arming it.

modification by stripping out the SRMs and replacing them with doubl heatsinks
while adding a new ERPPC to the right arm and a ERMedium Laser to the head. 
Although  his C.O. is mystified how he got the new tech when the Quartermaster
is still restricted to the old standard weapon he turns a blind eye to it and
hope that no higher authority will notice.

I'm surprised nobody has gone with 4 MLs, 2 Streak 2 Packs, Endo, 10 DHS, 5.5 tons of standard armor and the traditional 6/9/6 movement profile. Sure it is nothing exciting, but it is a cheap workhorse that is deadly at short range.

armies since Stefan Amaris' Rim Worlds troops destroyed the Stormvanger
Assemblies factory on Caph in 2774. Davion commanders have always held the
Javelin in high regard, deploying it in much greater numbers than the other
states and preserving them through the centuries of Succession Wars.
     With many Javelins in service, Davion officers are expected to make field
modifications to keep the 'Mechs abreast of recovered technology. Though no
confirmation has been possible, one variation has been reported. The Federated
Commonwealth's secretiveness about modifications to the Javelin are consistent
with the Mech's reputation for being sneaky.
      The unconfirmed reports indicate that commanders are replacing the left
torso SRM-6 rack with two SRM-2 launchers, presumably the Hovertec Streak. For
a small sacrifice in firepower, this change would make the Javelin appreciably
more efficient in using ammunition, enhancing its ability to stay on the
battlefield. By keeping one of the SRM-6 racks, the sneaky Javelin could
confuse an enemy about whether he was facing an original or a modified version
of the 'Mech.

with the Mech's reputation for being sneaky.
      The unconfirmed reports indicate that commanders are replacing the left
torso SRM-6 rack with two SRM-2 launchers, presumably the Hovertec Streak. For
a small sacrifice in firepower, this change would make the Javelin appreciably
more efficient in using ammunition, enhancing its ability to stay on the
battlefield. By keeping one of the SRM-6 racks, the sneaky Javelin could
confuse an enemy about whether he was facing an original or a modified version
of the 'Mech.

Thanks for throwing my version up on the board. I am on a Mac a good chunk of the time and have yet to figure out a good way to load HMP. Anyway, I can see a pack of Javelins having a mix of versions. The old sneaky as a Javelin has to come from somewhere.

I also see a Javelin as one of those old units that would soldier on for generations in the militia. It is fairly simple and can be easily modified to fill different roles based on need and available equipment. Need an anti-infantry or anti-vehicle unit and have an extra Javelin sitting there? Take the original stock version and a ton or two of infernos. Need a raider? How many MLs can you spare? This utility and availability would lend itself to a lot of minor upgrades and tweaks, even in the same unit.

Just my two cents.
