What is your favorite custom tournament legal 'Mech? If you could design a 'Mech for use in an official tournament, what would it be?

Seeing how tournaments normally mean BOOK mechs only not some min-maxed munchkin uber machine...then I would say the Highlander. Now if you want to know what mech I would use in a open game at a convention that allowed user made mechs well there isn't enough bandwith to list all of them.

You missed the objective of this thread. In addition, you incorrectly assume all book 'Mechs aren't min/ maxed. You also seem to think that any optimized design is "munchkin." If you want to use poorly designed 'Mechs, fine but you should refrain from deriding those who like to use good designs :)

Show me a book mech that is truly min-maxed, I have yet to find one and no I did not assume anything you wanted to know what we would use in a tournament, which by the rules is setup to use book mechs to avoid issues of min-maxed or other levels of folks claiming the event was bias or weighted against the other players by using non-regulated mechs vehicles etc...and if that is removed many players will field munchkin mechs that use loop holes to gain advantages. Seen it enough times when folks have allowed player built mechs at convention games. Everything from the 100 ton walking battleship with Clan pulse-targ combos that can alpha strike every turn without the pilot even breaking a sweat. Or the LAM that can dive bomb and converting to air-mech spend the rest of the game flying around sniping folks to death.

As for poorly designed, the books mechs are not bad mechs, they are built to be average, thus they are not min-maxed or built to be the elite of their weight class. Thus when used in a tournament it means all factors are equal and the players are now down to their skills of tactical use of their forces and the roll of the dice.

The only book Mech I consider 'munched' out is the Hellstar with 4 Clan ER PPCs and 30 DHS so that even at a run and alpha-ing it builds up only two heat. The only thing that it has against is the XL engine, but that is mitigated by maximum armor protection. With the TC/Pulse combo being de-munched, there is no other Mech that even comes close to being munched out, IMNSHO.

It has a slow speed for it's weight class, that can play against it and given that it's a known threat odds favor it being ganged up on fast quick and in a hurry, so if someone is running it they will be most likely using it to be the coup de grace or the basher thus it shouldn't last long once it is noticed.

Hellstar is 95 tons and goes 4/6, which means it's only slower than a small handful of Mechs. However, it can be defeated, you just two faster Mechs that can get behind it.

I'll take a stock 2750 Thug one on one against pretty much anything in the game, at least up to the 3070's. My awareness of the game stops with the Jihad, so no idea what's out there after that.

What about 'Mechs like the Daishi-A, Turkina-B, Masakari-C, Mad Cat-A, etc, etc. Basically it boils down to this: if you think the only canon 'Mech that is "munch," "munchkin," or whatever, is a design like the Hellstar with its its 4 Clan ER PPCs, then any other designs, canon or not, are not "munch."

Munch means different things to different people. Some find player made mechs etc...to be munchkin, while others find the players who use loop holes in the rules to win to be munchkins, or those who use home tech or player designed weapons to be munchkins. All of it is a matter of opinion. Each of the book mechs have flaws, and given that not every player is going to keep a cool and calm level of thinking once their perceived best mech is destroyed. Thus the mechs flaws of over heating or having limited ammo or that awesome heavy weapon is found to be not so awesome when it has minimum range etc...
