Quantity has a quality all it's own.

While generally this is regarded as a (relatively) true statement, when we look at the smaller (canon) Clans, we are shown militaries that have neither quantity (in raw numbers of Warriors) nor quality (in terms of equipment). Often labeled as 'resource-poor' and 'lacking in industrial capacity', the smaller third-tier Clans of the Homeworlds lack the quantity of troops fielded by the larger Clans AND (while their individual Warriors are highly trained) there is a serious lack of cutting-edge equipment to outfit those Warriors they do have.

Clans such as the Goliath Scorpions have the majority of their forces (two-thirds or more) made up of what is known as 'second-line' formations. Mostly with older standard BattleMechs (many just SLDF units with Clan weapons and heat-sinks exchanged for their original armaments) and even their front-line units make use of a far larger percentage of standard BattleMechs (although more modern designs) than more powerful (and richer) Clans.

This has always bugged me. It is an axiom of military philosophy that if you cannot have quantity, then you absolutely must have quality to make up for that lack in numbers. And, to be sure, these smaller Clans have much more quality than the Inner Sphere of 3025 or 3039 . . . after that, however, the gap begins to narrow considerably.

And it makes little sense . . . one would think that smaller Clans would see the need to have the absolute best equipment to provide their limited number of Warriors. If only to avoid a potential Absorption or Annihilation somewhere down the road.

Yet, canon has them all seemingly ignoring this and producing junk (Commando IIC, I'm looking right at 'ya!).

Well, no longer.

This thread will take a look at how the Scorpions (from the later years of the 2900s to the very eve of the Invasion) go about reforming and rebuilding their Touman to emphasize quality where they cannot field quantity.

But how will we do that without utterly changing what canon has laid down? After all, the Scorpions simply cannot afford to do this . . . can they?

Well, they can. If they quit wasting resources and producing junk and down-size their out sized Fleet. And, in another thread (The Black Fleet) in the Aerospace design sub-forum, I've postulated just how they might go about doing that.

With the funds and resources gained from selling of those ships (see that thread for details), the Scorpions should (note that I said should) have sufficient resources to build up their industrial infrastructure to the point where they can produce (for themselves) all of the OmniMechs that their Touman needs.

But there are still a few factors to contend with. First and foremost is the need (if the Scorpions are going to be self-sufficient) to be able to produce and manufacture all of the components of these 'Mechs. To do that, I've taken a rather unique approach. All of the 'Mechs presented in this thread share the same basic equipment:

Communications: JNE Integrated.
Tracking and Targeting: TRTTS Mk II with Targeting Computer

The Scorpions produce both of these in canon, but seemingly never bothered to standardize either one as a common component to reduce the strain on their logistics. Not so MY Scorpions. Every 'Mech in this thread carries those systems.

They will also have Compound GS Ferro-fibrous Armor (not canon) and use either standard or endo-steel frames (Coriolis is the Scorpion's brand name, here).

But it is the engines that are the biggest source of problems. I wanted to get down as a few engines as I possibly could, yet still have a full range of speeds and tonnages available. I (finally) managed to do so by settling on two engine designs: the 350XL (designated Skorpion Type I) and the 360XL (the Skorpion Type II).

This means that the designs are not going to be the most efficient, not by far. However, it reduces the burdens of the Scorpion military-industrial complex and the strain on their logistical train considerably.

Anyway, I do hope that you enjoy the 'Mechs that will be posted here. Your comments and critiques are always welcome. And with that, without further ado, here we go.

MA

HOODED EAGLE

Image

Overview

First introduced in 3035, the Hooded Eagle is the lightest of the new OmniMechs and BattleMechs fielded by Clan Goliath Scorpion. Based upon the venerable Ice Ferret OmniMech of Clan Wolf, the Hooded Eagle has a slightly heavier weapon payload and armor thickness, at the cost of some of the earlier design's fixed cooling capacity. Intended as a recon/skirmisher/striker, the Hooded Eagle is heavily optimized for that role . . . which could get a Warrior trying to using this OmniMech in another role in considerable trouble if he is not careful.

Capabilities

Using Ice Ferret plans acquired from their ally Clan Wolf, Scorpion Scientists stripped down the OmniMech to its bare chassis. The high turn of speed of the design was a major reason that the Ice Ferret had been selected as the basis for the Hooded Eagle and the engineers retained that massive 360XL engine. Armor protection was slightly increased (to eight tons) and pod-space increased as well (to eleven tons); these improvements came through the elimination of two tons of redundant (from the Scorpion point-of-view) cooling systems.

There are two sub-variants of the Prime. Each (the Prime-1 and Prime-2) are armed with a right-arm mounted ER PPC and a left arm mounted ER Medium Laser, both tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. An eleventh double-strength heat sink has been installed in the left torso as well. The only difference between the two is the Prime-1 mounts an Active Probe in the head, while the Prime-2 instead features an ECM Suite.

Configuration A is armed with two ER Large Lasers (right arm and left arm, both of which have fully functional lower arm and hand actuators) that are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer mounted in the right torso. As with the Prime(s), an eleventh double-strength heat sink (in the left torso) has been fitted . . . but unlike the heat-neutral Prime(s), the Hooded Eagle A has a pronounced tendency to run slightly hot. A skilled Warrior should be able to easily compensate for the excess overheat, but it is something that the Warrior needs to watch closely and keep in mind during combat operations.

Configuration B includes eight Jump Jets (four each in the right and left torso) for maximum mobility on the battlefield. The 11th DHS from the earlier configurations has been retained (in the left torso as well) as has the right torso mounted Targeting Computer (but only a one-ton model in this case). Armament consists of four ER Medium Lasers (right arm, left arm, right torso, and left torso) supported by a head-mounted Active Probe. An excellent recon unit, the Hooded Eagle B is agile and yet remains able to lay down a withering barrage of fire, despite a tendency to overheat.

Configuration C retains the jump jets of the B model, but removes the 11th DHS and the weaponry to instead mount an ER Large Laser as the sole weapon on the right arm (once more tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso). An Active Probe in the head provides for the collection of battlefield intelligence, while an ECM Suite in the left torso protects the OmniMech and his Starmates from hostile electronic warfare.

There is a single sub-variant of Configuration C that the Scorpions have designated Configuration C-TAG. This is identical to the C config except for the removal of the ECM Suite in order to install a TAG system in the left arm. As the Scorpions seldom employ artillery, the C-TAG Configuration is only rarely encountered on the battlefield.
Code:
Type/Model: Hooded Eagle (C-TAG)

Finally, there is the Hooded Eagle D. Intended for close-combat operations, the D Configuration retains the right arm mounted ER Large Laser of the C-configurations, but removes the jump jets and electronics. Instead the OmniMech mounts six ER Small Lasers (two each in the left arm, right torso, and left torso) to support the long-ranged ER Large Laser, along with two additional DHS (for a total of twelve). A two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso coordinates all laser fire and improves accuracy. Although short-ranged, the Hooded Eagle D is able to inflict crippling damage on an opponent that wanders too close or allows the Scorpion Warrior to maneuver into point-blank range. It is a favorite OmniMech for Scorpion Warriors fighting Trials of Grievance or Possession or Position against other Scorpions.

Clan Goliath Scorpion has managed to produce and deploy over three hundred Hooded Eagles (318 to be exact, or ~20.4% of the Scorpion's total 'Mech force within their Touman) in the past seventeen years. Although a medium-weight OmniMech, it is the now the lightest (and swiftest) 'Mech to be found within the Scorpion Touman. But the Scorpions are not the only users of the design. While Clan Wolf prefers their own Ice Ferret and Clan Ghost Bear their Viper designs, several other Clans (including the Cloud Cobras, Diamond Sharks, and Star Adders) have expressed an interest in the new design. Several score of these OmniMechs have been traded or sold off to interested parties and rumor suggests that the Adders (amongst others) will soon be seeking the production rights for the design.

SAND DEVIL

Image

Overview

The second new Clan Goliath Scorpion OmniMech to enter service was the 50-ton Sand Devil. Design work on this war-machine actually began in the final year of the tenure of Khan Marcus Solheim in 3017 when he instructed the Clan's Scientists to begin drafting schematics and programming computer simulations for what would become the BattleMechs and OmniMechs of Project Scorpion 3000. Even though the infrastructure build-up and industrial revitalization of the Clan had just begun, Khan Solheim wanted the designs ready to go when the facilities were finally on-line . . . either under the supervision of his current saKhan (Mikhail Kirov) or some future Khan.

The design took a strange turn, however, when the Scientists could find no suitable Clan unit of the appropriate tonnage to base the myomer and chassis design upon. Unwilling to risk a Trial at this stage, Solheim ordered the Clan's archivists to search their databases and find him an existing 'Mech that would be suitable for conversion into the Sand Devil. What they found, however, almost cost the Scorpions a great deal.

Based upon the Taurian Concordat Talos of the Reunification War, the use of such a tainted source was viewed by the other Clans in horror. Although the two designs (Talos and Sand Devil) had little in common other than appearance, several extremely conservative Clans (the Jaguars and Falcons amongst them!) considered basing any Clan design upon such a treacherous and unclean model as heresy!

When the design was unveiled (and the other Khans were informed by their own Scientists and historians of where exactly the Scorpions had found their inspiration), they demanded an assembly of the Grand Kultrai itself for an explanation.

Despite Scorpion protests, the Council of Khans (by a vote margin of just three) ordered that the design be purged . . . and the Scorpions start anew. But Khan Kirov demanded a Trial of Refusal . . . and the Jaguars and Falcons both vied for the honor of upholding the Council's decision. This was the only thing that saved the Scorpions and their design, as the two powerful Crusader Clans began a series of Trials to determine which would have the honor of thrashing the Scorpions . . . and in the process managed to inflict just enough casualties upon each other that the Scorpion's 24th Cuirassier Cluster was able to (barely) eke out a victory over the mauled 7th Jaguar Dragoons!

However, due to the origins of the design, no other Clan would accept it within their ranks. To date, all Sand Devils so far manufactured remain within the Scorpion Touman; any captured as isorla are destroyed immediately after capture.

Capabilities

Massing 50-tons, the Sand Devil uses a 350XL engine that provides for a walking speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour and a running pace of 118.8 kph. There are no fixed jump jets or additional double-strength heat sinks, but the design features the maximum possible armor protection for a 50-ton design . . . nine tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating.

This has left Scorpion engineers with 16.5 tons of pod-space for weapons, cooling units, and other equipment.

Configurations

The Sand Devil Prime is outfitted in a manner that greatly resembles the original armament of the Talos (although this weapons plan was not decided upon until after the Scorpion's Trial of Refusal!). The main gun is an ER Large Laser in the right arm, supported by an ER Medium Laser in the left arm. Both lasers are tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. The right torso also carries an LRM-10 launcher outfitted with Artemis IV fire-control systems and two tons of ammunition (24 missile salvoes). The left torso features a Streak SRM-6 launcher with a single ton of munitions (15 salvoes). An eleventh double-strength heat sink has been added to deal with heat production, but a full running Alpha Strike will still result in excess overheat generation.

Configuration A is a more typically 'Scorpion' arrangement of weapons. The primary weapon is an ER PPC in the right arm, supported by three ER Medium Lasers (left arm, right torso, and left torso) and a Flamer (center torso). The PPC and all three lasers are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso, while a total of fifteen DHS alleviates all but movement heat (exclusive of the short-ranged Flamer).

Configuration B was designed as an Air Defense Element of the Scorpion Touman. The right is outfitted with a long-ranged LB-5X autocannon with two tons of ammunition (40 bursts, typically a mixture of slug and cluster) with the left arm carrying an ER Large Laser. A single ER Small Laser in the center torso is the sole back-up weapon. All three guns are tied into a three-ton Targeting Computer placed in the right torso. The Sand Devil B uses only the base 10 DHS, but is still unable to overheat without being coated in inferno gel or suffering damage to the engine.

Configuration C adds seven jump jets (three each in the right and left torso, one in the center torso). Weaponry consists of an ER Large Laser in the right arm, an LRM-10 launcher in the right torso (with two tons of ammunition for 24 missile salvoes), and a SRM-6 launcher in the left torso (with one tons of ammunition for 15 salvoes). The laser is tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. Eleven DHS eliminates all heat except that generated by a jump. However, the Sand Devil C is not viewed positively by the Scorpion rank-and-file, many of whom regard being assigned to this unit as a punishment.

The final (official) Sand Devil configuration is Configuration D. Like the C, this version also mounts seven jump jets and is armed with an ER Large Laser in the right arm. But in this case, the back-up weapons consist of six ER Small Lasers (two each in the right torso, left torso, and left arm). Cooling is provided by thirteen DHS which allows the Sand Devil D to remain heat-neutral on a running Alpha Strike, although jumping will generate some excess overheat. A two-ton Targeting Computer is installed in the right torso, along with an Active Probe. Scorpion Warriors much prefer this configuration to the C and it is quite common, especially for Star Commanders in mixed Sand Devil/Hooded Eagle Stars.

Deployment

To date, Clan Goliath Scorpion is the only known user of the Sand Devil, as the resemblance to the Taurian Talos is just too great for the other Clans to readily accept. So far, the factories on Roche have managed to produce and turn over to the Warrior Touman nearly 450 completed Sand Devils, although some have been lost over the years. This OmniMech is the most commonly encountered unit within the reformed Scorpion Touman, comprising ~27.7% of the total number of BattleMechs and OmniMechs that the Clan fields.

DESERT TIGER

Image

Overview

The third OmniMech of Project Scorpion 3000 was the 60-ton Desert Tiger. This OmniMech, in particular, attracted the attention of Khan Solheim during the early days of design, drafting, and development. Not because of its importance to the Touman (which was high) or because of the need to make as few errors as possible (which was critical), but rather because the Desert Tiger was based upon the SLDF Lancelot. The BattleMech that was the chosen war-machine of the first Clan Goliath Scorpion Khan: Cyrus Elam.

The Scientists, Technicians, and Laborers rose to the challenge and presented the first completed Desert Tiger to Khan Kirov and saKhan Nikolai Djerassi in 3035. It is said that Khan Kirov actually smiled as he examined the OmniMech in close detail . . . and that both the Clan's leaders were highly impressed with the final result.

Fast, well-armored, and capable of carrying a sizeable warload of weaponry and equipment, the Desert Tiger prototype had met all of their expectations . . . and exceeded them. This heavy-weight OmniMech would soon become very sought after amongst the Clans of Kerensky and despite valiant Scorpion attempts to stop it, soon enough the rights to produce this design were possessed by other Clans.

Capabilities

Massing 60-tons, the Desert Tiger uses an endo-steel chassis and 10.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating to reserve a full twenty-three tons for pod-space. Combined with the Skorpion Type II 360XL engine that allowed for a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph, this was rather remarkable.

Of course, detractors noted that it was virtually identical to the lighter (55-ton) Stormcrow, but Kirov and Djerassi pointed out that the frame itself was slightly tougher and the OmniMech more heavily armored. They did acknowledge, however, that the older Stormcrow was less expensive to acquire and maintain.

But the Stormcrow was a Smoke Jaguar design not commonly found in the Toumans of Warden Clans. This new Desert Tiger, however, was a Warden design from concept to delivery.

Configurations:

The Prime mimics (somewhat) the original layout of the SLDF Lancelot . . . or perhaps the Awesome, depending on whether you ask a Clan Warrior or someone from the Inner Sphere. Three ER Large Lasers are mounted (right arm, left arm, and center torso) all tied into a three-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. A total of eighteen double-strength heat sinks alleviate all but the heat generated by movement. Often described as 'brutally elegant' in its simplicity, the Desert Tiger Prime is a prime example of the type of 'Mech favored by Clan Goliath Scorpion.

Configuration A is very similar in nature. The main guns are a pair of ER PPCs (right arm and left arm), backed up by a center-torso mounted ER Medium Laser. All three guns are tied into a three-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. The heavier Particle Projection Cannons forced the Scorpion engineers to remove one DHS, leaving seventeen. Although the design will overheat on an Alpha Strike, the amount is rather low compared to many Clan designs and well within the limits of what any Warrior should be able to handle.

Configuration B has been armed with a single ER PPC (right arm) and a massive twenty-tube LRM launcher (in the left arm) equipped with Artemis IV fire-control for its three tons of ammunition (left arm, for a total of 18 missile salvoes). An ER Medium Laser in the center torso is the sole back-up weapon, but both the PPC and laser are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. An ECM Suite (left torso) completes the defensive equipment of this configuration. Fourteen DHS makes the design heat-neutral on a running Alpha Strike, while the ECM is able to provide a bubble of protection for the Warrior's Starmates.

Configuration C was intended for Air Defense . . . but is widely regarded within the Touman as being undergunned. It is not popular amongst the Scorpion Warriors, but it is reasonably effective against hostile aerospace fighters and OmniFighters . . . and thus the Clan's leadership ensures that it remains an active part of the Touman. The main anti-air gun is a LB-5X autocannon in the left arm with two tons of munitions (also in the left arm for 40 bursts; usually a mixture of both slug and cluster are loaded). The right arm carries an ER Large Laser (which matches the LB-5X in range quite nicely) and three ER Medium Lasers (right torso, center torso, and left torso) are fitted for closer-range combat. All five weapons are tied into a three-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso for maximum accuracy. Fourteen DHS can cope with all but the heat generated by movement during an Alpha Strike . . . which was deemed as 'acceptable'.

Configuration D owes much of its origin to the SLDF Grasshopper, despite only a handful of examples leaving on the Exodus. Six jump jets are mounted (three each in the right and left torso) for maximum mobility. Seventeen DHS alleviate some, but not all, of the heat generated by the Desert Tiger D when it uses its firepower and mobility to the fullest. Like the Grasshopper, this configuration is armed with a center torso mounted Large Laser (ER Large, in this case) and four ER Medium Lasers (right torso, left torso, right arm, and left arm). The Desert Tiger D even restores the lower arm and hand actuators missing on other configurations! All five lasers are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso (which takes the place of the LRM-5 launcher of the Grasshopper of old). Although unable to execute a jumping Alpha Strike without generating overheat, the OmniMech can perform a running Alpha Strike and remain heat neutral.

Deployment:

By 3052, the Scorpions have managed to produce in excess of five hundred Desert Tiger, some 416 of which were added to their own Touman (or approximately 26.7% of the total number of BattleMechs and OmniMechs fielded by the Clan's active duty units). The remainder were either traded, sold, or captured in combat by other Clans.

In 3038, Clan Wolf surprised Khan Kirov by announcing a Trial of Possession for the design schematics and the right to produce the Desert Tiger . . . this was only the first of nearly a dozen Trials that occurred over the course of the next decade. Currently, the design is being produced not only by the Scorpions (who have scaled back production since there is no longer as much of a market), but by Clan Wolf, Clan Star Adder, Clan Cloud Cobra, Clan Diamond Shark, Clan Snow Raven, and Clan Ice Hellion.

The Scorpions did not lose to all of these opponents . . . but once the design left their hands, there were Trials between those who had not emerged victorious over the Scorpions and those who had acquired the schematics. This has not pleased the Scorpion leadership at all, as they had counted on sales to other Clans to cover aspects of their increased military budgets.

EDIT: I left one Desert Tiger Configuration out . . . my mistake. It is posted here, and then I'll start to post the 70-ton Goliath Scorpion.

Beginning in 3042, a sixth configuration of the Desert Tiger was introduced. With the ascension of Nikolai Djerassi as Khan of the Clan, there was a shift in the operational doctrine of the Scorpion Touman. While the new OmniMechs managed to fill many of the roles previously held by standard BattleMechs, their expense had forced first Khan Solheim and then Khan Kirov to accept a lower overall average tonnage for the Clan. For example, in the new Scorpion Touman there was not one single assault-weight OmniMech fielded.

While this did allow the Scorpions to reduce costs to the point where they were able to reequip their existing Clusters (and even form four new Clusters to expand the Clan's fighting strength), it also forced the Clan to concentrate more on maneuver and precision firepower over heavy individual warloads and ponderous advancement. On the positive side, the introduction of the Scorpion 3000 OmniMechs provided the Clan with a relatively massive increase in the ability of its Clusters to outmaneuver their opponents in the field; perhaps not to the extent taken by Clan Ice Hellion, but the Scorpion renewal presented new opportunities for their tactical and strategic doctrine. It also made the Clan begin to consider adding a force multiplier that it had previously refused to employ: field artillery.

Although Khan Kirov refused to sanction such, Khan Djerassi was very much interested in the concept. After all, both the Star Adders and the Wolves routinely fielded Artillery Trinary . . . although these were often enough bid away during an actual Trial. Starting in 3042, Djerassi formed the first Scorpion artillery formation since Operation Klondike . . . and the newly configured Desert Tiger Es were assigned.

Outfitted with an Arrow IV Artillery Missile System (placed in the right arm/right torso along with four tons of munitions for a total of 20 fire missions), the Desert Tiger E quickly proved a fast-moving and capable artillery unit. Secondary armament consisted of an ER Large Laser (left arm) and an ER Medium Laser (center torso), with both weapons tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer installed in the left torso. An ECM Suite was installed to provide added defense against hostile units. Although only the base 10 DHS were fitted, this was deemed sufficient as the Desert Eagle E has no business firing both the artillery and conventional weapons simultaneously.

Regarded as a punishment detail, assignment to the Reserve Artillery Trinarys (Khan Djerassi eventually built three such formations) is not a post that most Warriors are happy to receive. However, in recent years (after the Invasion of the Inner Sphere), a handful have seen just how effective (and necessary) artillery support can be and the post is slowly gaining some respect. Not much, but far more than the previous assignment of Warriors considered either solahma or rule-breakers.

Tactically, the Desert Tiger E is a paradigm shift for many opponents, for no one expected to see an Artillery Configuration on an OmniMech able to run at speeds of 97.2 kph . . . much less one with credible self-defense weapons and actual armor! Although able to carry only half the missile launchers of the 80-ton Naga used by Clans Star Adder and Wolf, the increase in speed and decrease in cost was deemed worth the loss of half the artillery tubes. Especially for a Clan that had previously not had any artillery units.

With the addition of 45 new Desert Tigers to the Touman, this versatile and capable OmniMech has overtaken the Sand Devil as the most common Clan Goliath Scorpion OmniMech within the Clan's Touman (with this one OmniMech forming ~29.5% of the total Scorpion OmniMech strength within the Touman).

GOLIATH SCORPION

Image

Overview

Originally planned as the final OmniMech of the Scorpion 3000 Project, the 70-ton Goliath Scorpion was intended to be the hard-hitting fist of the Touman. However, difficulties in producing the OmniMech, combined with the high cost in resources forced Khan Kirov to substitute lighter Sand Devil and Desert Tiger OmniMechs for a good portion of the units that he (and Khan Solheim before him) had intended the Goliath Scorpion for.

Despite this setback, the Scorpions managed to produce and field some three hundred of the new Goliath Scorpions (approximately 19.2% of the Clan's total OmniMech force). Able to match pace with the existing Mad Dog, Hellbringer, Summoner, and Timber Wolf, the new OmniMech was well protected and had a spacious pod-space that allowed for a frightening array of weaponry.

It has quickly assumed its rightful place as the most desired assignment within the Clan.

Capabilities

At 70-tons, the Goliath Scorpion uses a 350XL engine that provides for a walking speed of 54.0 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 86.4 kph. No fixed jump jets were installed, although at least one configuration is so outfitted. Armor protection is eleven full tons of ferro-fibrous, resulting in an OmniMech just slightly less well protected than a Timber Wolf. Four additional double-strength heat sinks were installed as fixed equipment within the engine core to save internal space, leaving the Goliath Scorpion with 29.5 tons of pod-space for weapons and equipment.

Configurations:

The Goliath Scorpion Prime, when it first debuted, was a creation from the worst nightmare of any MechWarrior who had ever lived. Not only was the design well armored and relatively fast, it was outfitted with three ER PPCs (!!) fitted to the right arm, left arm, and center torso. Furthermore, all three of these big guns were tied into a four-ton Targeting Computer (in the right torso) for maximum accuracy across all ranges. The addition of an ER Small Laser (mounted in the head) was almost an afterthought.

Despite the weight of the guns and targeting computer, the Prime also managed to cram some twenty-one double-strength heat sinks onto the chassis. While not enough to compensate for all weapons fire while moving, it did allow a skilled Warrior to operate the ER PPCs in a 3-2-3 firing pattern for minimal loss in combat effectiveness. The lack of onboard munitions also removed the threat of an ammunition explosion should the excess overheat grow too large.

When the first example of the Goliath Scorpion Prime was encountered by Inner Sphere forces during the Invasion (as a member of the Clan Wolf Touman) it was immediately christened as 'The Awesome from Hell'.

The A Configuration is very similar to the Prime . . . but the devil lies in the details. The three main guns are down-graded to merely ER Large Lasers, and nineteen double-strength heat sinks allow the Warrior to run and gun with these weapons and remain heat-neutral! But where the Prime focused on sheer hitting power with the heavier ER PPCs, the Goliath Scorpion A instead mounts an extensive battery of secondary guns: seven ER Medium Lasers (three each in the right and left torso, with the seventh installed in the center torso) and an ER Small Laser (mounted in the head). At short range, these guns inflict more damage than the triple ER Large battery . . . but also run slightly hotter. Still, a skilled Warrior should be more than able to compensate.

However, the Khans (and the Clan's technicians responsible for maintaining these OmniMechs) do not recommend firing both the long-range and close-in guns simultaneously. While possible (and potentially able to inflict tremendous amounts of damage) doing so is almost certain to result in a shut-down OmniMech on the field of battle (or Trial). Still, Warriors appreciate having that option.

All eleven guns are tied into a four-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso, and engineers installed an ECM Suite (also in the right torso) for additional defensive measures.

Configuration B is intended to serve as a heavy Air Defense and/or anti-vehicle unit in the Cuirassier Clusters. The right arm features a powerful ER PPC, while the left arm has been fitted with an LB-10X autocannon and three tons of munitions (30 bursts), normally a mixture of slug and cluster shot. Three ER Medium Lasers (right torso, center torso, and left torso) serve as the secondary weapons. All five guns are tied into a four-ton Targeting Computer (right torso) while sixteen DHS alleviates the worst of excess overheat concerns. Finally, the engineers installed an Anti-Missile System in the head, with a ton of ammunition (24 bursts of fire) stored in the left torso.

To date, the final configuration of the Goliath Scorpion is the C Configuration. Outfitted with five Series-17 Jump Jets (for a 150-meter jump capacity), this version is based on the SLDF Grasshopper. The main gun is an ER Large Laser in the right arm, supported by four ER Medium Lasers (right torso, center torso, left torso, and head), all tied into a three-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. For anti-personnel and incendiary duties (as distasteful as that is to Clan Warriors), the Scientists fitted a Flamer to the left arm beneath the ER Large Laser.

However, instead of the head-mounted LRM-5 of the ancient Grasshopper, the Scorpions instead fitted an LB-5X autocannon to the left arm, along with two tons of munitions (for a total of forty bursts). Equally effective against ASF, VTOLs, and Vehicles (with Cluster munitions) as well as 'Mechs (with slug), this weapon has a greater effective range and more versatility than the old missile system. And when using slugs, the Warrior gains the accuracy bonuses of the Targeting Computer for his shots.

Eighteen DHS cools the Goliath Scorpion C enough that the Warrior can run-and-gun (without the Flamer) while using his jump jets almost constantly and build up only minor excess overheat. Although many Warriors within the Touman (and in other Clans) consider this configuration rather undergunned, it is nonetheless effective as part of a Star. (And surprisingly successful in one-on-one duels, as well.)

Deployment:

While the Scorpions (so far) retain exclusive production rights to the design of very capable OmniMech, battlefield capture of isorla and negotiated trades have resulted in a number of these war-machines entering the hands of other Clans. Perhaps the largest user outside of the Scorpion Touman is Clan Diamond Shark, whose leaders provided sufficient resources and treasure to acquire seventy-five of these powerful heavy-weight units.

There will be one more OmniMech posted. About the title . . . well, I had originally planned to have two BattleMechs, but then realized that the Desert Tiger would actually make a far better artillery platform. Streamlining logistics and all, you know?

Anyway, I should have the sole Scorpion assault-weight design (the Dune Stalker) up sometime tomorrow.

Overview

Following the ascension of Nikolai Djerassi to the Khanship in 3040, the new Khan ordered a Touman-wide review to assess the new OmniMechs and formations created by Khans Solheim and Kirov. While for the most part, the Clan had seen a major improvement in logistics, maintenance, and operations, there were some notable problems. First and foremost was the overall lowering of the Touman's average tonnage . . . and the resulting decline in firepower and individual unit durability. Although this had been expected, and the Scientists and Warriors behind Project Scorpion 3000 had warned of this very issue, for the most part the increased effectiveness and versatility of the four OmniMechs that now comprised the Touman were far more capable and effective (individually) than those that they had replaced. Still, the lack of a true assault-weight element to the Clan (which had previously fielded large numbers of assault-class warmachines!) boded ill for future encounters with Clans that favored such units.

Indeed, already the Scorpions had lost three Trials (one to the Coyotes, a second to the Jaguars, and a third to the Star Adders) where the lighter (albeit faster and more maneuverable) Scorpion OmniMechs just simply could not prevail against the raw firepower that their opponents possessed.

Khan Djerassi sought to change that. However, he did so by not changing (again) the Touman structure, or the revised Cluster table of organization and equipment. His plan had two parts, one of which could take almost immediately. The second would require more time.

First, the Khan ordered that the Desert Tiger be configured as a Artillery Support Platform and that a Reserve Artillery Trinary (which would eventually turn into three such formations) be created. This quick fix provided the Touman with a boost in firepower . . . but it was useless in the typical intra-Clan Trials where artillery was often bid away.

The second part was the design, development, and production of a true Assault-weight OmniMech. Christened the Dune Stalker, this 90-ton beast would be unveiled in 3045 after five years of development and testing.

Not wishing to adjust the Clan TO&E yet again, Khan Djerassi borrowed from the SLDF of old. Noting that the Star League Defense Forces had fielded companies, battalions, and even regiments comprised of the same exact make and model of BattleMech, he called for the establishment of the 13th Scorpion Shock Cluster . . . a new formation that would be equipped exclusively with the Dune Stalker as that OmniMech became available.

It was a decision that made other Clans sit up and take notice. Even the most traditional Clans who favored the use of Assaults (the Coyotes, Jaguars, and Adders amongst them) were uncertain whether the Scorpion decision was brilliant or delusional. However, after becoming active, it quickly became clear that the 13th Shock Cluster (or the Harbingers of Misfortune as the Scorpions named them; although some wags referred to them instead as the Bad Luck Brigade) was a powerhouse that few Clan opponents were prepared to handle in combat.

Seldom committed en masse, the 13th Shock nonetheless saw a variety of combat throughout the later years of the '40s and early '50s . . . and whenever one of the five combat Trinary were committed to the field, the Scorpions prevailed.

Despite this, the sheer cost of these OmniMechs prevented Khan Djerassi from raising more than one Shock Cluster, limiting the number of Dune Stalkers within the Clan to a mere forty-seven. Assigned to some of the deadliest Warriors in the Scorpion Touman, along with veteran Elementals and fighter Pilots, the 13th Scorpion Shock Cluster is a force with which to be reckoned on any field of battle.

Capabilities

The Dune Stalker masses some 90-tons in overall weight, using a 360XL engine that allows the OmniMech to walk at speeds of 43.2 kilometers per hour and run at 64.8 kph. Fourteen double-strength heat sinks were banked within the engine core to save valuable internal volume. Fourteen and one-half tons of Compound GS Ferro-fibrous armor provides near maximum protection for the chosen weight class . . . however, concern over the dwindling internal space led to the Scientists to recommend (and the Khan approve) that the OmniMech be built with standard internal structure materials rather than endo-steel composite (making the Dune Stalker the only OmniMech in the Touman that does not use endo-steel).

This left thirty-nine tons of pod-space available . . . more than the Gargoyle, Warhawk, Kingfisher, or Executioner, albeit without much of the fixed heat sinks or other equipment some of those OmniMechs also carried.

The overall body design was based on the ancient Stalker BattleMech used by the Inner Sphere and SLDF . . . although subtle changes make the chassis appear to be leaner and faster (which it is, actually).

The Dune Stalker Prime is virtually a Clan copy of the original STK-3F Stalker in terms of classes of weaponry. Two ER Large Lasers are the main ranged weapons (fitted one each to the right and left torsos), while four ER Medium Lasers support these guns in close (two each in the right arm and left arm). Twin LRM-10 launchers with Artemis IV fire-control systems were installed next (one each in the right and left arm, each with two tons of ammunition for 24 dual salvoes), while a pair of Streak SRM-6 launchers were placed within the torsos (one each in the right and left), fed by a single ton of ammunition in the right torso.

[Continued from Dune Stalker Prime, above] A three-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso links all six lasers together for maximum accuracy at all ranges, while a total of twenty double-strength heat sinks . . . well, they try to cope with the amount of heat this design can produce but simply cannot deal with the full excess overheat production! Warriors must be cautious and refrain from simply holding down the big red button labeled 'Alpha Strike' . . . attempting to use that button will often result in the Warrior detonating his own ammunition stores and shutting down his OmniMech. Which is quickly followed by a transfer to a solahma formation.

At range, the Dune Stalker Prime is able to use both ER Large Lasers and both LRM launchers, generating only movement heat as excess. In close, the Warrior can use all four ER Medium Lasers, both LRM launchers, both Streak launchers (if they lock), and run without generating excess overheat. Instead, the Warrior can use one ER Large, all four ER Mediums, and both Streak launchers . . . substituting the LRM launchers if the Streaks fail to lock. This firing pattern results in generating only movement heat as excess.

Still, the Dune Stalker Prime is not an OmniMech for a novice Warrior by any stretch of the imagination . . . and the Scorpions have made certain to only place exceptional (and experienced) Warriors within their cockpits.

The Dune Stalker A is designed as a support unit to deal with hostile vehicles and aerospace fighters. Although not as popular among Scorpion Warriors as the Prime or B (see below), the A Configuration is a vital one to the 13th Shock Cluster. Armament consists of two ER PPCs (right torso and left torso), two LB-5X autocannons (right arm and left arm; each with two tons of ammunition for 40 tandem bursts; typically the Dune Stalker A carries a mixture of slug and cluster for maximum flexibility), and a center torso mounted ER Medium Laser. All five guns are tied into a six-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso, while sixteen DHS alleviates the worst of the excess overheat production. Leaving out the ER Medium Laser, the Dune Stalker A is heat neutral on a run . . . and any veteran Warrior should be able to easily balance that heat load.

Of course, even the Scorpions contain within their ranks Warriors who feel they simply must melt their targets . . . and themselves. For those Warriors, the Dune Stalker B was designed. All ammunition based weaponry has been eliminated, removing the possibility of any internal ammo explosions . . . and making pressing that 'Alpha Strike' button far more survivable. Configuration A carries four ER Large Lasers (two each in the right and left arms), supported by eight ER Medium Lasers (mounted four each in the right and left torsos)! These are the only weapons carried, but a five-ton Targeting Computer (right torso) ensures that most shots will land on their target. Even with 24 double-strength heat sinks, the Dune Stalker B can badly overheat . . . although it generates only movement heat at range using the ER Large Lasers and runs fairly cool with just the ER Mediums in close. However, when a Warrior must simply, absolutely, and positively make a hostile OmniMech or BattleMech 'go away', this OmniMech can lay down a blistering array of fire . . . at the expense of shutting down afterwards.

The final configuration is the Dune Stalker C. Fitted with four jump jets to improve mobility (two each right torso and left torso), this model is based on the Prime to a large degree. To fit the jump jets, the design team had to remove four double-strength heat sinks (leaving sixteen DHS) and one ER Large Laser (the second was moved to the center torso). An ECM Suite was added to the center torso as well, using the tonnage gained from the right torso Targeting Computer shrinking from a three-ton unit to a two-ton unit. Like the Prime, the Dune Stalker C requires a Warrior who thinks rather than rushes in where angels fear to tread. However, when using the weapons properly within their natural engagement brackets, this OmniMech has a good heat curve that rewards tactical thinking.

And with that, dear readers, we finish with the new Goliath Scorpion OmniMechs of my vision. Five designs, using one of just two engines (350XL or 360XL), the same comm array, the same T&T array, and the same type of armor.

I hope that you enjoyed them and that you will use them in battle. Let me know how they perform for you.

I love these MA! They make sense as a streamlined production portfolio. I've always thought the Clans would have gone about things differently then they did for frontline Omnis, and this makes sense. Are you planning on any tweaks to secondline units? I've always been of the opinion that refitted IS mechs with lower tech(standard frame and engine at the least) made more sense then most of the secondline designs due to resoruce investment. Are you plugging these into any new fiction?

New fiction? I've got a couple of things I am working on, but they aren't ready for posting.

And for second-line units . . . there is a mega-thread in this sub-forum on that very topic!

I didn't see the second-line thread until AFTER I posted that. Thanks MA.
