WIDOWMAKER (aka Marauder IIC)

AUTHOR'S NOTE: I really did not like how they made the Warhammer (see above) and Marauder into assault-weight machines. To me, these two are the supposed to be relatively common heavies, not rarely seen assaults, and I've never really liked what the Powers That Be did. So, I've changed it. Some might not care for it, but this is just a game. Use what you like, discard what you don't. Enjoy.

Overview

One of the most respected and cherished BattleMechs of the SLDF was the venerable Marauder. It was also one of the first BattleMechs to be fully upgraded to what is now Clan standard technology. The design was started by Clan Widowmaker just a few months prior to their absorption at the hands of Clan Wolf. Capturing the data along with the rest of Widowmaker's resources and civilians, the Wolf leadership ordered that the design be finished and upgraded with the latest technological innovations.

Over the decades since, the Widowmaker (named as such due to the gallant efforts by a handful of former Widowmaker Warriors to ease the integration of their fellow Warriors into the Clan Wolf Touman) has been constantly upgraded to remain on the cutting edge of technology--although without an expensive and resource consuming XL engine it remains inexpensive enough to assign to second-line and garrison forces.

Still exclusively produced by Clan Wolf, a handful of these command BattleMechs have reached other Clans where those Warriors prize it just as highly as members of Clan Wolf.

Capabilities

Massing 75 tons, the Widowmaker uses the ubiquitous 300-rate standard fusion engine that allows for a walking speed of 43.2 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 64.8 kph. No jump jets were mounted, so mobility is (slightly) restricted. An endo-steel chassis and eleven tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (for 91% maximum coverage) were used to save weight and space.

An Active Probe (mounted in the head) gives this war-machine superb command and control capabilities. The main guns are two pairs of ER Large and ER Medium Lasers (mounted one each in the right and left arm pods so reminiscent of the Marauder of old and greatly resembling the modern Timber Wolf OmniMech of today). Backing up these guns is an LB-10X autocannon in the right torso fed by three tons of ammunition (for a total of 30 bursts--a mix of cluster and slug is usually loaded). To deal with hostile infantry (a weakness of the original Marauder), the design incorporates four one-shot Anti-Personnel Pods (two per leg).

Nineteen double-strength heat sinks ensure that the BattleMech is cool-running, remaining heat neutral even on a running Alpha Strike.

A single variant (the Widowmaker 2) has been sighted on the battlefield. This model replaces the LB-10X autocannon with a harder-hitting (but not as flexible) Ultra AC-10 (retaining all three tons of ammunition). While this variant runs hotter than the standard, it is also preferred by a majority of Clan Warriors.

Sorry for the delay, but I am back with the start of our assault-weight lineup.

CANIS

Overview

Long a favorite garrison BattleMech for Clan Smoke Jaguar, the Canis is a slow, but fairly mobile, design capable of engaging targets at nearly all ranges from the most extreme to point-blank. Firepower is excellent for a second-line BattleMech with two hard-hitting Ultra autocannons supported by both extended-range and pulse lasers. However, the Canis has not proved popular among many other Clans (the Blood Spirits, Coyotes, and Star Adders being the only Clans other than the Jaguars to employ this design in great numbers). It's reliance on the shallow magazines for the twin autocannons and lack of internal space for modifications, combined with the slow speed, means that it is only rarely seen in the Toumans of the other thirteen Clans.

Capabilities

An 80-ton assault-weight BattleMech, the Canis uses a 240-rate fusion engine that is underpowered for the sheer mass it is providing motive power to. Maximum speed is 54 kilometers per hour running, with a walking speed of a mere 32.4 kph. The design team also used endo-steel internal structure and twelve and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (97% of maximum coverage), a design decision which sorely cramped internal volume.

The weapons mix only exacerbated those difficulties, making maintenance on a Canis extremely difficult and time-consuming. Both the right and left torso carry an Ultra AC-10 with two tons of ammunition stored in each torso (20 shots per weapon on single fire). The arms lack hand actuators and carry twin laser mounts: an ER Large Laser for long-range engagements and a Medium Pulse Laser for close-quarters combat. These energy weapons ensure that even when the autocannon magazines are depleted that the Warrior honored to pilot a Canis is able to inflict damage to his Clan's enemies.

Seventeen double-strength heat sinks are fitted to the design . . . and the small engine size forced no less than eight of them to be to be housed outside of the core. Although this consumed all of the remaining internal volume and mass, the Canis remains able to overheat very quickly. Warriors assigned to these BattleMechs must keep a careful eye on their heat gauge lest they find themselves helpless and shutdown in the face of their opponents.

CLOUD COBRA (aka Zeus IIC)

Overview

Based upon the design of the Lyran Commonwealth Zeus BattleMech, the Cloud Cobra is the pride and joy of the relatively small Clan Cloud Cobra ground Touman. Although an effective BattleMech that is versatile and reliable, the Cloud Cobra is not greatly favored outside of the ranks of the Clan that designed it. Few examples exist within the Toumans of other Clans, making the Cloud Cobra a rarity, especially in the Inner Sphere.

Capabilities

At 80 tons, the Cloud Cobra is one of the lightest Clan assault-weight designs. Yet it maintains a relatively high ground speed with power provided by a 320 rate standard fusion engine. In order to fit the necessary weapon systems, the design team incorporated endo-steel internal structure and 12.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (for 97% of maximum theoretical coverage for an 80-ton chassis). This decision left thirty-four tons available for weapons and equipment.

The armament chosen was very similar to that of the older Zeus. An LRM-20 outfitted with Artemis IV fire-control systems was fitted to the right arm, along with a massive four tons of ammunition (for a total of 24 missile salvoes). The left arm carried a hard-hitting Gauss Rifle fed by three tons of ammunition (for a total of 24 shots). Some Warriors consider the amount of ammunition carried by the Cloud Cobra to be excessive, but the Warriors who have had the honor to take this machine into combat can only praise the design's endurance.

An ER Large Laser was installed in the right torso, while the left torso contained an ER Medium Laser. In an attempt to provide this BattleMech and it's assigned Warrior with the upmost protection, the Cobra design team also incorporated a head-mounted ECM Suite to confound and confuse the enemy.

Thirteen double-strength heat sinks are banked within the engine housing, leaving plenty of room within the chassis for Technicians performing maintenance and repairs. This is enough heat dissipation to allow a Warrior piloting a Cloud Cobra to remain heat-neutral on a running Alpha Strike.

DIAMOND SHARK (aka Victor IIC)

Overview

Common amongst all of the Clans of Kerensky, the Diamond Shark was design and built by Clan Diamond Shark in homage to the SLDF Victor BattleMech. Fast moving (for an assault weight design) and highly mobile, this war-machine is a much sought after assignment due to its high-powered armament, excellent armor protection, and jump capacity.

Capabilities

The Diamond Shark masses 80 tons and uses a 320-rate standard fusion engine that allows for a walking speed of 43.2 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 64.8 kph. Four jump jets (installed two each in the right and left torsos) give the design the capacity to make a 120-meter jump. The design team used both endo-steel and ferro-fibrous armor (12.5 tons for 97% of the maximum possible protection on an 80-ton chassis) to save as much mass as possible.

The main weapon is an LB-20X autocannon in the right arm with three tons of ammunition (for a total of 15 bursts of fire). Secondary close-in weapon systems include a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers in the left arm (along with a hand actuator) and a Streak SRM-4 missile in the left torso (fed by a single ton of ammunition for a total of 25 missile flights). Recognizing that the greatest weakness of the original Victor was the lack of any significant ability to damage targets at distances greater than short-range, the Sharks outfitted their new BattleMech with a center torso mounted ER Large Laser as well. This weapon provides a sting at ranges beyond those of the autocannon, pulse lasers, and SRMs.

Fourteen double-strength heat sinks were fitted to the design, but the this is not enough to compensate for all of the heat generated by an Alpha and the use of the jump jets--or even during a running Alpha Strike. However, the excess overheat production is manageable by any skilled Clan Warrior and should not present a great difficulty in using this BattleMech in the field.

The Diamond Shark 2 is a simple modification that removes the LB-20X autocannon and replaces it with a fearsome Ultra AC-20. All other systems remain the same, including the heat sinks and autocannon ammunition storage bins. Although prone to overheat dramatically (especially in double-tap mode with the autocannon), the Diamond Shark 2 is the more popular design amongst the majority of Clan Warriors.

HELLRAISER (aka Awesome IIC)

Overview

Designed by Clan Goliath Scorpion and manufactured by Clan Star Adder, the Hellraiser is the Clan successor to the SLDF Awesome. Faster, longer-ranged, more accurate, and capable of inflicting more raw damage to the enemy, the Hellraiser is a prized possession among the Warriors of the Clans. It is considered to be an honor to be assigned to such a war-machine by many; although there are some who consider the design to be 'boring' and 'repetitive' due to its lack of mixed weapon systems.

None, however, can deny the sheer carnage that this BattleMech is able to inflict upon the enemy.

Capabilities

At 80 tons, the Hellraiser uses a 320-rate standard fusion engine . . . a rather surprising move given that the original Awesome that the design is based upon used a lighter 240-rate engine. However, the increased power allows the Hellraiser to walk at speeds of 43.2 kilometers per hour and run at speeds of 64.8 kph while at the same time providing more than sufficient power to the three ER PPCs (three!) carried by the design.

Mounted in the right arm, right torso, and left torso, these weapons are some of the most feared developed by the Clans. Other weapons may hit harder or have slightly longer ranges, but it is the (relatively) light-weight and compact Extended-Range Particle Projection Cannon that makes the Hellraiser so terrifying. A single lucky hit from just one of these guns can shear the head off of an Atlas or a Dire Wolf . . . and the power of three of them combined on the same target can annihilate many light- or medium-weight designs in one salvo.

To make matters worse, the Goliath Scorpion design engineers hard-wired a four-ton Targeting Computer to the Hellraiser, making these weapons more accurate and allows for highly skilled Warriors to target specific locations on hostile BattleMechs or Vehicles (albeit with some difficulty).

Next, twenty-one double strength heat sinks were fitted. This is not enough to completely compensate for the massive spike in heat created by firing all three ER PPCs simultaneously--but it is enough that any trained Warrior should be able to operate without too much concern. Having a single ton remaining, the design team decided to incorporate a head-mounted Small Pulse Laser as a last-ditch weapon system; one which also provides limited anti-personnel capabilities to the Hellraiser.

The design is especially popular among second-line and Garrison force commanders who tend to be on the lowest supply priorities. As the Hellraiser lacks any ballistic or missile weaponry, it is an ideal BattleMech for garrison assignments, as well as combat operations in the field.

I really need to find a group to battle against here in the Killeen TX area...these would be interesting to run.

BLACK CAIMAN (aka Stalker IIC)

Overview

Although originally designed and fielded by Clan Coyote, today the Black Caiman is an integral part of every Clan's second-line and garrison Touman. In fact, while this BattleMech is no longer produced by the Coyotes, it remains in limited production at two other facilities: one Diamond Shark and one owned by the Star Adders.

Intended to replace aging SLDF-era Stalker BattleMechs during the early years of the Golden Century, the Black Caiman serves as a singular example of just how deadly Clan technology can be used to update ancient designs for the modern environment. Although one of the oldest Clan BattleMechs to remain in service, there are no serious plans to retire this unit.

It is simply too effective in the garrison role to discard lightly.

Capabilities

Like the Stalker of old, the Black Caiman masses 85 tons. Coyote Scientist-Warriors incorporated an Endo-Steel II internal chassis, however, in order to save mass. While the two designs mount the same tonnage of armor, the Black Caiman featured the newly developed (at the time) Clan Ferro-fibrous plating--allowing for an increase in armor protection to more than 98% of the maximum possible for an 85-ton bipedal frame.

Five of the STK-3F Stalker's twenty heat sinks were removed, but all fifteen remaining were replaced with double-strength models, providing for an increase of 50% in heat dissipation capacity for the BattleMech. Both BattleMechs retain the 255 Strand standard fusion engine, which does (somewhat) limit the Black Caiman's tactical deployment. Walking speed is a mere 32.4 kilometers per hour with a running speed of 54.0 kph.

These design choices did limit internal space, however, resulting in a very cramped interior that utilizes 100% of the available volume. This crimp on space has made altering the Black Caiman a laborious and difficult process, and many Technicians swear at fever pitch (outside of the hearing of the Warrior caste) whenever a Black Caiman enters the repair bays.

Armament closely mirrors that of the original Stalker. Two LRM-10 racks are fitted one each to the right and left arm, but these weapons have been equipped with Artemis IV fire-control systems to ensure a larger percentage of missiles striking home against their target. Magazine capacity was doubled as well, giving each long-range missile rack twenty-four full salvos.

Complementing the LRMs at range, the Black Caiman mounts two Large Pulse Lasers, installed one each in the right and left torsos. Using the Large Pulse Lasers and LRMs at range does not strain the improved cooling system, allowing for a Warrior to run and remain heat neutral.

At closer ranges, four Medium Pulse Lasers (mounted two each in the right and left arm) come to bear. As the range drops still further, three SRM-6 launchers (one each in the right, left, and center torso, with two tons of ammunition for 10 triple salvoes--all of which are outfitted with Artemis IV FCS--)adds to the carnage the Black Caiman is able to deliver onto its targets. This BattleMech has enough heat dissipation to allow for all seven of these weapons to be used and remain heat-neutral on a run. Alternatively, if the Warrior wishes to conserve ammunition, he can use one Large Pulse Laser, all four Medium Pulse Lasers, and either one LRM or SRM rack and generate only movement heat.

Recognizing that the SLDF Stalker had been rather weak against infantry, the Coyote design team next added a Flamer just beneath the cockpit. Having two tons remaining, the design team decided to add an Active Probe (right torso) and an ECM Suite (left torso) to the design, allowing the Black Caiman to serve as a command element for garrison units, as well as providing for an electronic counter-measures bubble to add to the defensive capabilities not just of this one BattleMech, but it's entire Star!

However, like the original SLDF version, the Warrior assigned to a Black Caiman must make judicious use of his available weapon systems and not over-tax the cooling system. An Alpha-strike made by this BattleMech is liable to result in a Warrior detonating his own onboard ammunition supplies and shutting his war-machine down in the process. Such reckless Warriors are almost always heavily disciplined afterwards (if they survive the multiple internal explosions, that is!).

Although not suited for most open-field battles, the Black Caiman is almost ideal for garrison duty. And while the design is not quite as ideal for offensive use, it has been used (rather frighteningly effectively, it must be said) in such a role by numerous Clans over the past century-and-a-half!
