I've had some fun converting units seen in Jack of Harts over to BattleTech stats because...well...because I can. :) And because I have an awesome program for it. Hehehe. The fluff belonging to the designs is all mine and is used in the stories I write. The design specs...anybody can make them and use them. Have fun if you like. ;)

Taro Scout Mech

The Japanese have been Earth’s leading experts on robotics since the heydays of the global electronic revolution that preceded the Second Great Depression. And they were the first to deploy true robots in war when China attacked their home islands. The mechs failed to repel the invaders, but they bought enough time for the evacuation ships to get away. The Japanese have since continued their robotics studies in New Japan and most successful mech designs deployed in America have at least some of their experts involved in the design process.

The Taro was built entirely in New Japan as part of the Army 2300 Project. The project’s goal was to revolutionize the American ground forces and finally bring a century of technological advancements together into a new generation of combat craft. The scout mech competition called for the smallest mech currently fielded by American Federal Armed Forces. It needed advanced sensors, onboard electronic countermeasures, and sufficient mobility to evade detection or escape those capable of finding it. It also needed to be able to be able to call fire in from distant artillery or orbital batteries while in hiding or on the move.

A dozen different American manufacturers submitted scout mech designs for the competition and they were first tested against a Machol, the scout mech they were expected to replace. Five of the designs failed to defeat the Machol in at least three out of five battles and were dismissed from the competition. The seven remaining designs engaged heavier and more powerful mechs, where five of them failed as expected. They also faced numerous vehicles in competitions ranging from simple destruction to a series of scouting and spotting tests. The final testing round was against each other.

The Taro was one of two designs that consistently won in every competition while other designs failed in some and excelled in others. It didn’t always win as spectacularly as other designs, but it had fewer equipment malfunctions, and a greater number of successes than all other competitors except the Hickok. The final test between the Taro and the Hickok pitted superior stealth systems against superior firepower. The Taro’s ability to blend into the terrain allowed it to escape detection long enough to sneak in behind its rival and shoot it in the back with a well-placed shot that destroyed the power core.

In an irony that was lost on very few people, the Army chose both the Taro and Hickok as design winners and placed an order for what they saw as the final design. They ordered the Hickok’s main weapon mated with the Taro, thereby giving both corporations a valuable military contract. That change delayed deployment of the completed design by nearly three years as the two companies fought over what compromises to make in the targeting and power systems. The Taro finally entered service in 2301 but continued software and hardware glitches forced many service crews to “downgrade” to the original Taro weapons array in order to avoid downchecking their machines. The two companies continued to blame each other for the problems until a white hat hacker broke into the two systems, stripped out the proprietary softwares, and developed a modular converter that translated between the Taro and the Hickok’s weapon.

The Taro became the primary American scout mech of The War, and improvements in the modular weapons mount made it an unpredictable enemy. They always mounted advanced targeting and detection systems, as well as advanced scrambling technologies to hack enemy systems. And their stealth systems made them far more difficult to find than other mechs. The Taro sports a limited, short-term flight capability, and its modular weapons mount can now operate weapons built by any of the major powers. The Taro was by far the most effective American scout mech of The War, and has continued in service to humanity to this day.

Cool design. So no endosteel?

I was going for advanced technologies on top of old construction.

It was just the basic idea I was shooting for.

It came out very nicely. I like the twin ML version better; more credible firepower.

Oh yes...the twin ML version is better IMHO. Twin MLs are always better than 1 MPL after all.

But I like both of them for different reasons. ;)

Rapid advances in weapons technology after the Peloran unlocked their bags of technological goodies gave the Taros access to more advanced weaponry that could match the Hickock's range with the original Taro's accuracy. While it was still less powerful, it was a significant boost to the options that a Taro could bring into combat.

The designers soon upgraded the Taro's Hickok package with more advanced lasers that gave it better range than any previous model of the Taro. It was a moderately successful upgrade but some people thought it overloaded some of the Taro's main systems to get the upgrade in capability. Many pilots refused to use this one, while others swore by it.

The Taro's Hickok 3 version debuted in 2307 and was the first major production version to include the War Era Peloran technology uplifts. It sported improved electronic warfare capabilities that made them even harder to detech and carried a lighter but more powerful weapon pack that boosted her combat performance impressively. The first of these Taros and upgrade kits for existing units arrived at the Sunnydale depots in 2307 and took part in the initial assaults on the Hyades Cluster. Standard operating procedure at the time was for the troop ships to wait until the navy destroyed all Shang or Chinese defense fleets over a Hyadian world, and then rush forward to drop Taros while the wreckage was still falling. That allowed the Taros to mask their orbital drops as just another piece of wreckage and they would quickly disappear once they hit ground. They proved their capabilities by scouting out hidden defensive positions for orbital fire or follow up ground forces to deal with, and in the rare cases where they got caught in combat they acquitted themselves well and usually managed to disengage after heavily damaging their opponents.

The Taro 3 refit made its first appearance in the Hyades Cluster and was a total surprise to the Chinese defenders. While not mounting electronics as effective as the newest Hickok version, these Taros were better than any previous Taro and their weapon pod was almost without peer. The Peloran weapons proved highly effective against all foes and made this Taro one of the most dangerous ever fielded.

The Taro 4 variant is similar to the 3 in electronics load, but the engineers gave her an upgraded weapons pod designed to increase her engagement radius to that enjoyed by the Hickok 3 variant. While the design proved effective in the Hyades Campaign, it was not as popular as the Taro 3 version and is no longer considered for prime front line deployment. Most Taro depots do keep Taro 4 weapon pods on site though, so battle damage and loss of spare parts for the Taro 3 pod does sometimes result in continued deployment of this design.

The Taro's Hickok 4 variant was in many ways one of the most successful Hyades Campaign refits of the scout mech. While it's electronic warfare capabilities were not as powerful as some Taros, its weapons were powerful enough to damage main battle tanks or mechs. It could quickly destroy scout or other lighter units, making it a credible light fighter when in need. A platoon of these Taros striking from hiding killed many Chinese and Shang units during the Hyades Campaign, and many give partial credit to the Taro for the final victory there.

I was just looking at this design again and going...crap...I would love to play this in a double blind game.

I would hate to be the other side facing this in a double blind game.

Seriously. This is all about hiding and attacking from the darkness without warning. Nasty little bugger.
