Overview

The third phase of Khan Djerassi's reforms of the Clan Touman was the introduction and inclusion of conventional vehicle/Elemental Trinary within the structure of the Clan. This concept, however, met with considerable resistance from the Warrior rank-and-file. To many Scorpions, the use of vehicles (despite the heavy Star League Defense Force reliance upon them!) was akin to heresy . . . and their Bloodnamed leadership made their own feelings on the matter quite public.

However, the success of the 13th Scorpion Shock Cluster and the acceptance (albeit grudgingly) of the new Reserve Artillery Trinary (s) gave Djerassi some political capital which he spent heavily to calm the waters. In the end, the Scorpion Bloodnamed Council voted in favor of Djerassi's proposal . . . but it passed by a mere three votes!

None called for a Trial of Refusal, though.

Thus was born the Nike, a fast tracked Pursuit Tank . . . but the future employment of that vehicle in Clan Goliath Scorpion remains in question. Djerassi was allowed to design, develop, and build enough of the vehicles to outfit five Trinary . . . but by the time that the last of the initial production run was complete, the Invasion had been halted and the Khan had resigned.

His replacement (Ariel Suvorov) was not his choice of successor, but the Pilot had campaigned very well and handily won enough votes to be elected. While Jackson Schaffer did call for a Trial of Possession for the Khanship, a lucky strike by Suvorov early in the combat penetrated the cockpit of his Desert Tiger and killed the man that Djerassi had hand-picked to lead the Clan.

To make matters worse, Suvorov was not too fond of many of the changes that Djerassi (and Kirov before him) had made to the Touman--and she viewed Combat Vehicles as abominations only fit for third-rate Warriors!

Although she retained the five existing Trinary (permanently assigned to Garrison duty), she ordered the production lines shut down and the assembly factory disassembled. However, at the request of the Horse Khans (who had expressed considerable interest in the design), she delayed this order to produce a few dozen Nikes for Fletcher and his Clan leadership to examine in detail. Should the Horses remain interested, she may allow the plant to continue manufacturing the tank . . . but for export only.

Capabilities

The Nike is a 50-ton design that is based largely upon the Vedette of the Inner Sphere. During the first 'supply run' by Wolf's Dragoons, three examples of this ubiquitous 50-ton tank were shipped back to the Homeworlds. After some study of the examples, two were scrapped and melted down . . . but the third ended up in a Scorpion museum on Roche! And when Khan Djerassi needed a proven tank chassis, he ordered his Scientists to dig up the files from when these vehicles were first appraised and examined . . . and build him a working modernized Clan OmniTank from this starting point!

While the Vedette had been (in the Inner Sphere, at least) considered a fast tank, the other requirements that the Khan mandated would see that asset boosted considerably. He ordered that the new OmniTank must be compatible with the current Scorpion military production . . . hence it needed to use the Skorpion Type I 350XL engine or the Skorpion Type II 360XL engine for power generation.

This choice (and the decision to base the tank on the 50-ton Vedette) led to a cruise speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour and a flank speed of 118.8 kph--an incredible pace for a tracked vehicle of this weight, either in the Homeworlds or the Inner Sphere! Seven and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating was considered more than adequate by the Clan Scientists (although many in the Inner Sphere would have been concerned it was too low). Still, the front, sides, and turret were all able to resist penetration by two Gauss slugs or a pair of Clan ER PPC strikes; the rear was slightly less well protected and only resistant to three IS Large Laser hits. Provisions were made for the inclusion of a one-ton turret . . . leaving a mere eleven and one-half tons of pod-space available for weapons and equipment.

This, combined with the high price tag as well as the general disdain amongst the Scorpion Warriors for vehicle crews, was what ultimately doomed the Nike and prevented it's acceptance within the Touman.

Configurations

The Nike Prime is well armed for such a fast tracked tank. The main gun is a Large Pulse Laser in the turret with a ten-tube LRM launcher fitted in a co-axial mount (and equipped with Artemis IV). A two-ton magazine provides enough missiles for twenty-four salvoes.

Khan Djerassi had originally wanted to avoid Pulse weapons . . . but the lack of room to fit the heat sinks for an ER Large Laser along with a dedicated Targeting Computer made him realize (in the end) that despite what he wanted, the inclusion of a Targeting Computer on an (ultimately) expendable vehicle intended for second-line and Garrison duties would be a waste of resources. The Large Pulse Laser was a compromise intended to compensate for the lower skills of the Warriors assigned as vehicle crewmen; in addition it provided a sizeable punch and possessed an excellent range. Combined with the missile system, the Nike Prime proved to be quite effective as a striker and skirmisher.

While many Warriors consider the Nike undergunned in all configurations, the C Configuration is possible the worst in that regard. Intended to provide air defense and anti-vehicle support to the Trinary, the main gun is an LB-5X autocannon with two tons of ammunition (40 bursts). A co-axial mounted ER Medium Laser is the sole secondary weapon, but the Scientists who designed this configuration also included an Anti-Missile System with a ton of ammunition (for 24 defensive bursts of flechettes). Even moreso than the remaining Nikes, assignment to the C Configuration is viewed as a punishment detail of the worst order.

The Nike D is the final configuration. Intended as a command/recon version, this configuration includes an Active Probe for enhanced sensor resolution and early detection of threats, an ECM Suite to defend the vehicle and its Starmates (as well as attached Elementals), a TAG system for designating targets for inbound artillery strikes, and an Anti-Missile System (with a ton of ammo for 24 shots) for additional defense against hostile missiles.

The main weapon is a Large Pulse Laser, supported by a pair of Machine-Guns for anti-personnel work (with a half-ton of ammunition for 100 bursts of fire).

Khan Djerassi never fully informed the Scorpion Bloodnamed of his true plans for the Nike. Just getting the vehicle built and manned (in small numbers) was difficult enough; but the Khan had planned to gradually assign a full mixed Trinary to each and every Scorpion Cluster as a means of providing a force multiplier and increasing the Elemental strength that the Touman could field. With his abdication of the Khanship in 3052, however, those never revealed plans died still born in Djerassi's mind. Without the support of saKhan Ren Posatavz (lost in the Devil's Bath on Tukayyid) and his influence over the Clan's more traditional Warriors, Nikolai knew that he had little chance of succeeding in forcing his Clan to accept the use of vehicles (even a limited number of vehicles) in front-line Cluster formations. Despite the increase in firepower and infantry support such a move would provide the Touman.

To date, Clan Goliath Scorpion has formed five Trinary formations to test the new Nike concept . . . although in the minds of many it is already a failure. Each Trinary consists of one Star of OmniTanks supported by two Stars of Elementals. As each of the ten Nikes can carry up to five Elementals as battle-riders into combat, the entire Trinary is capable of moving at speeds of up to 118.8 kph.

While the fifty Nikes in the Scorpion Touman may not be joined by any others in the foreseeable future, the Horses have expressed an interest in the design and are currently testing several on Niles for possible inclusion within their Touman.

So far, no other Clan has expressed any interest in the vehicle.

this is not an Omni-vehicle, but as all weapons are in the turret so it should be possible to build Versions easyly.

would the Goliath Scorpions, after becomeing used to the use of artillery and vehicles, be fielding something like this?:

Mobile Artillery Vehicle

They just might. If they can get past the 'stigma' of vehicles, that is.

man it with solahma warriors, and use it in a Trial of posession, the humiliation of loosing vs. solahma in vehicles might stop others to try.
of course this would only be part of the mix.

7-11 speed on a 50-ton track is slightly insane, but it has character in spades. Has Motown been rubbing off on you? ;)

Regarding coba's proposed variant: I know of nothing in canon about the Clans using tube artillery. All their canon arty units up to the Jihad use Arrow IV's only. Take that as you will.

The prime variant is similar in armament to what I did with the Zorya a long time ago...

http://heavymetalpro.com/forums/viewtop ... =9&t=16011

Overall, the entire family reminds me of the canon 3025 Saladin, Scimitar, etc. family of 35-ton hovers in terms of its armament variations on basically the same chassis. That isn't a bad thing, though I admit, I'm having a little difficulty hashing out the tactical niches of the different models, because many of them are so similar.

I might have tried using an AP Gauss instead of the MG's on the D model.

Random caffeinated thoughts...

Insane in a good way or a bad way? :D

On the "D" Config, yeah, an APG would have been nice. But that weapon has not been developed at the time the Nike debuted.
