Numbering vehicles is a good idea when it comes to organizing your forces, the germans did that with their Kfz and sd-kfz numbers(sd-kfz 251/1 to sd-kfz 251/23 were the halftrack medium APCs for example). the lager a force becomes the more important a good organization becomes. the largest force in the battletech universe is that of the SLDF. another idea is to create standard patterns that all equipment providers have to follow, like the CMP(Canada military pattern) The idea for my system is this: 1. all numbers in a specific range are similar, 1-99 for example is motorcycles 100- 199 is light cars etc. 2. the numbers follow the following system: first a capital S, to mark that it is a number from the "star league defence forces standard pattern system" then comes the vehicles number, then comes a / followed by the version number, followed by a single letter to designate the engine type(o for standard ice, d for diesel f for fusion b for battery s for steam). the version number is used to tell apart vehicles that are identical, exept for the equipment. example: S 100 o is the standard four-seater car, with a standard ice-engine. all vehicles that have a number with S 100/XX o use the same spare parts, chassis and engine. the different /XX describe the variations in the equipment examples: S 100/1 o has a pintle mount in the middle, fixed to the rollbar, it has only 3 seats, the 4th is replaced with an ammo -box. the pintle mount is empty in this version. S 100/2 o is the same as /1 with a machinegun in the caliber 7.62 SLDF S 100/3 o is having a heavy machinegun in 12.7 x 99 SLDF S 100/4 o has a light recoilless gun S 100/5 o has a medium recoilless gun S 100/6 o has a 100 mm bazooka S 100/7 o has a 40 mm auto-grenade-launcher S 100/3 f is a light car with a fusion engine, having a heavy machinegun in 12.7 x 99 SLDF, the chassis is identical to that of the o version, only the engine is different. the number ranges are: S 1-99 motorbikes S 100-199 light cars (four seaters and vehicles based on them) S 200-299 medium cars (six seaters and the vehicles based on them) S 300-399 Heavy cars (eight seaters and the vehicles based on them) S 400-499 one axle trailers S 500-599 two axle trailers S 600-699 trailers with more then 2 axles S 700-999 reserved S 1000-1999 light trucks(below 5 tons of payload) S 2000-2999 medium trucks (5 to under 10 tons of payload) S 3000-3999 heavy trucks(10 tons and above) S 4000-4999 unarmored tracked vehicles S 5000-5999 unarmored hover vehicles S 6000-6999 unarmored Vtols S 7000-7999 unarmored boats S 8000-9999 reserved S 10000-19999 wheeled armored vehicles S 20000-29999 tracked armored vehicles S 30000-39999 amored hover-vehicles S 40000-49999 armored Vtols S 50000-59999 armored Boats S 60000-99999 reserved Numbers from 100000 upwards are for experimental vehicles, prototypes and vehicles that were constructed before the Numbering-System was introduced. Additional to the idea of numbering the vehicles comes the idea to separate the R/D that flows into a vehicle from the building of it. the Supreme command would call for a new construction, several companies would then subject their ideas. in the next steps the SC would eliminate all constructions that they think are non-promising and grant funds for the construction of prototypes to the companies that subjected feasible ideas. this process of funding the construction/development, and eliminating companies, goes on until one acceptable construction is found. this construction then becomes a standard pattern. The supreme command can now ask for offers for, for example, 1000 light cars S 100 o. as the standard is set there can not be any cost increase because of later alterations. |
