Overview
The Bruinen was created by the Republic of the Sphere to support the Ares and Poseidon super heavy mechs when crossing bodies of water. It has since found use in supporting wheeled and tracked units as well. The Ares units find them particularly useful as a Mech transporter when dropships are not available as it is faster even with an Ares loaded than the mech is itself.

I know that support vehicle hovercraft of 100 tons are possible, but combat vehicles? Also, does the engine weigh at least 20% of total mass?

Yes you can mix the two rule sets for construction to get a combat support vehicle, makes no sense really, but that is how it's done.

Ok, I just got home so I can check my books. A 50-ton combat vehicle hovercraft is not possible. 100-ton support vehicle hovercraft are possible, and yes it is also possible to (inefficiently) mount weapons on them. However the rules for making combat vehicles are completely distinct from the rules for making support vehicles, and the procedures cannot be mixed.

This design appears to be a combat vehicle because it is using ferro-fibrous armor, which is not available for support vehicles (they use different armor classifications).

Therefore, this design is illegal because 1) Hovercraft built using the combat vehicle rules can't be over 50 tons, and 2) the engine of a hovercraft must weigh at least 20% of the vehicle's total weight regardless of the rules being used to construct it.

Interesting idea, but not usable outside of casual play.

Did you see the part in the rules about combining the two types? They talk about making support vehicles for combat, again TPTB don't understand military systesms, but they do offer the use of the two rule sets together. Just you end up with a very under powered vehicle.

What rules are you referring to? I just looked at them and didn't see anything like that mentioned anywhere.

Yes, it is possible to mount weapons on a support vehicle. Possible, but not ideal. However, the end result is still a support vehicle for construction purposes. In comparison, a combat vehicle will always be a superior fighting platform.

This was made using the rules for superheavy combat hovercraft which you can produce combat hovercraft of up to 100 tonnes given the balkanisation of the rules books it's quite hard keep track of the rules, but they do exist in Tactical Operations . The same book which has these rules in also has rules for making combat vtols of up to 60 tonnes. The program I used megamek lab doesn't display the tonnages but a quick check of the tables show that this is legal.

Tactical Operations has the rules. And I agree the combat side would be better, hence why I am against have two different rule sets for vehicles and have been vocal about it. Only to get the normal BS answer back from TPTB in that they will do what they want with their game and thanks for the input but no thanks. Prime example is the 1945 TRO, all of the vehicles in there are hybrid vehicles built using the combined rules and none are really usable in a game against anything even 3025 tech with no extra thrills.

So it is. Hmm.

I mean, if you can build a 100-ton combat hovercraft why build anything else? Crazy. It's exactly why I've de-emphasized hovertanks in most of my games.

From playing games hovercraft quite often either get immobilised by critical hits or you risk turning at flank speed fail the roll and they spin into woods and get immobilised, best is when they get immobilised over water and they sink.
