The McKinley class vessels were the original ships that carried the Calderon expedition to the Hyades Cluster. Still in service to the very end of the War, these ships moved men and material across the worlds of the Concordat.

==Overview:==
The McKinley class heavy transports are ancient vessels. These twenty-two
ships are the actual colonial transports used to first settle the Hyades
Cluster by Samantha Calderon's expedition.

They aided in building the Concordat by serving as the transports that carried
out the second colonization wave to the nine other worlds of the Nebula, then
the third wave to the surrounding worlds of what could become the Taurian
Concordat.

These ships were never dismantled--and over the years have been extensively
refitted. Now, each ship is capable of carrying up to four DropShips, as well
as twenty-four small craft. Over 95,000 tons of cargo space and 5,500
passengers can be carried in a single lift--with supplies and fuel for a
voyage of up to four years duration.

Though armed, these are not combat vessels, but heavy lift transports. Eight
Martin-Gordan Flare Class 35 Naval Lasers provide only marginal protection
against a determined aggressor. Armor is similarly light, with only two
hundred and eighty-four tons of standard armor plating.

During the Reunification War, these ships ferried troops and supplies from
world to world. However, when the war ended, the Star League discovered that
all twenty-two ships of this class had vanished. They could find no records
of where they might have gone. This has led to speculation that as the war
was winding down, a deperate Taurian government might have loaded up the
ancient ships with volunteers and sent them into the uncharted regions farther
away from the Concordat and the Star League.

Perhaps these ships were dispatched on such a mission. One day, their
descendents might find us--descendents of Taurians with a hatred of the Inner
Sphere and all that it stands for. Consider this--in less than two hundred
years, the original Taurian colonists had expanded to over one hundred
worlds--and fought the Star League to a stand-still for twenty years. It has
now been over five hundred years since the end of the War. And if they are
out there, and they still have a taste for vendetta, then our own fights with
the Clans might well have been merely the prelude to Armageddon.

that reminds me of an idea how to fill a colony: offer the government(in this case that of the star league) that you can rid them of all that citizens that "are a threat to harmony" if these people have to be "put an eye on" they could cost the state a lot of money, it would be cheaper if the state paid for a "ticket to the perifery". this idea i should merge with the idea of the lost taurians: so one day mr "john smith" offers to rid the SL of all those dissidents for a decent fee. a few month later the taurians have thousands of people critical of the starleague as aditional settlers...and it gets even better: the SL provides mr. "john smith" with maps of the perifery as far as the explorer corps has come...

I really think there should be more ships like this in the BT universe. By that I mean transports armed for their own defense. Something like this would be more then a match for most raiding forces a pirate band could muster without being as expensive as a true warship.

Yup.

Nice design and interesting fluff.

The one question I have is the idea of adding DropShip collars to a ship designed before DropShips were used.

There are some major differences in structure between old-school Jump drives and the newer ones that allow DropShips to "Suck teet" on them to go through. I just don't think the conversion could be done, or if it would be considered cost effective.

I actually left out about half the fluff--the part where these ships were originally the Aquilla class Colonial Transports (designed before DropShips and docking collars had been invented).

Over the course of two and a half centuries, they have been refitted, rebuilt, and overhauled so many times--and docking collars added--that the Aquilas became the McKinleys.

And you are right, it was one hades of job to pull off. Thing is, these ships are just too important to the Concordat to be allowed to sit in orbit exposed to vacuum. For the first 100-120 years after the settlement of the Hyades, repairing and refitting these ships had a HIGHER priority than Concordat WarShips did--at least in my little take on this sector of the BattleTech universe.

Now as to the specifics. Each of the old Aquilias (non-docking collar transports, with about four 5,000-ton heavy shuttles each in internal bays) had to be taken into a shipyard and basicly REBUILT--stripped down to the very core of the KF Drive, and then put back together with the 'new' technology of docking collars.

I imagine that it would take four-five years to refit one single ship of this class. Was it worth it? You have to decide that. But, if you are establishing a new colony--or want to move a pocking great amount of infantry--very few things are better than the McKinleys in Concordat service.

Well...anything is possible when you have time, money, determination, or any combination thereof that is capable of getting over the hump.
