Its a very interesting idea, BUT, not I'm not too certain how useful it would prove. Unlike 'Mechs or A/S fighters, an Omni-WARSHIP would be a friggin' nightmare to engineer. Remember, the more weapons you add, the more gunners you need (and accomodations, and life support, and . . . you get the idea). Plus, in my own opinion, structural integrity would greatly suffer. After all, you are leaving huge gaping voids within the hull to fit weapons (which can be switched from one firing arc to another when the modules are rearranged, no less). It shouldn't be a quick turn around like an Omnimech, but should be similar to something like a Vincent that can spend a few months in doc to switch roles instead of needing to build from scratch. |

rockjock sees it as intended: the ships cannot be switched within minutes or hours, but all important parts (movement/control/KFD etc) are concentrated along a small backbone-like area, so changing the weapons or payload would at least not require a complete rebuild. large open spaces arent a problem in my opinion. the hangar-decks of a carrier(present, not sci-fi) are large open spaces as well, i would not see them problematic at all. if you plan for different versions from the beginning variations should be possible within days or weeks. large changes(changing a BB into a CV) should be possible in a few month(as opposit to years for a complete rebuild). the intention here is that the nation in question has no experience in building warships, therefore making mistakes in building normal warships would cost a lot more than in a ship that is intended for change. it is possible that later versions would be optimised for efficiency, dropping the variability. @lafeel: this is not intended as clan, i just chose clan as a base. @master arminas: the crew-quarters dont have that much volume, when the elements of the structure are having (for example) a structure of 2,5 metres distance where the CQ are the crew-quarters could be build as small containers/modules as well as life-support, that is the smallest problem. as an alternative officers quarters could be used as passenger quarters(first class) crew quarters could be used as passenger quarters(second class) etc. the size of large voids is unimportant as long as the structural support is small-meshed enough, the hangar of a carrier has a lot of volume, but it could be seperated with a lot of supports, as long as the supports are wide enough appart to let a fighter through. when the supports for an omni-warship are designed the width of the meshes should be a bit above the wingspan of a fighter, and the height a bit higher than a large mech, that would also allow to let about anything else important through. inside the ship larger areas would be used, the structure under the skin of the vessel might be smaller structured, with a few openings. weapon-modules could be having their own structural integrity, so when a module is installed it replaces a "skin-module" or other weapon module including the structure that module has. |

I actually saw it that way too, but unlike you two, I am not sold on the idea. While it seems to work on paper, I am not convinced it'd work in practice. As for the tech base, last time I knew tech base made the vehicle, you can't just mix and match without going lvl3. |

perhaps the idea is more workable if we attach modules to the outside of a vessel, the vessel would have a high rectangular crossection, with a few openings that would allow to transport mechs/fighters/cargocontainers etc. from side to side. the whole surface would have conection-points, and little hatches for energy/water/etc-supply. weapon-modules, cargo-modules, whole flightdecks (all of wich would have their own armor) would be attached to the sides. |

The problem with modules like that is that they would almost certainly be vunerable to attack. Namely the attachement points would be weak spots in the armor for a foe to target. |
