Over on Shattered Dawn, this was the winner of the 18th design competition for submissions to their alternate universe. I thought that I would share the Wind Dancer with all of you (first design of mine that won anything!).

==Overview:==
The first Wind Dancer class frigate was launched in 2654 by Asuncion
Industries of Asuncion as a new breed of Capellan Warship. Wind Dancer
featured a high thrust rating for it's mass along with an armament optimized
for extreme-range combat. Though not as heavily armed as many designs used by
the Terran Hegemony and other Inner Sphere powers, the Winder Dancer
outclassed any other ship in it's weight class with the amount of protective
armor the designers included in the design. From 2564 to the Amaris Coup,
Wind Dancer class vessels served throughout the Confederation, but never in
the numbers desired. The very advanced ferro-carbide armor proved difficult
to produce in large amounts, and because of this, the number of ships Asuncion
was able to commission remained low. Still, by the time of the Exodus, forty
ships of this class had entered service, with two additional vessels under
construction at Asuncion. However, the violet conflicts of the last two
decades of the 28th Century crippled the Capellan Navy. By 2800 only six
ships of the class remained in active service, with one Wind Dancer remaining
incomplete at Asuncion.

==Capabilities:==
Wind Dancer class vessels were capable of generating 3-g's of thrust--an
impressive amount for a 650,000 ton vessel. Enough fuel bunkerage was
provided to allow a patrol duration of 180 days of constant 1-g thrust. This,
along with substantial food, water, and spare parts storage capacity allowed
the 420 crew and passengers sufficient supplies for a patrol of up to one
years duration in order to secure the far-flung borders of the Confederation.

Primary armament of the Wind Dancer consisted of sixteen heavy naval PPCs
spaced evenly across the ship, in eight bays of two each. Secondary armament
was provided by sixteen capital missile launchers (8 Barracuda and 8 White
Shark) in sixteen bays, once again evenly spaced across the ship. Each
missile launcher was given an independent magazine with space to store 30
missiles.

Two squadrons of heavy fighters--typically Eagle class--were embarked, along
with four small craft. One hundred Marines provided troops for shipboard
security, boarding actions, and fast-reaction forces to set down on a world to
keep the peace.

With less than thirty-two thousand tons of cargo capacity, the Wind Dancers
holds were small compared to contempory Star League vessels, but more than
suffiicent given the Capellan doctrine of conducting operations near support
bases. Overall, a total of 9.6% is devoted to fuel, spare parts storage, food
and water, life support, and bulk cargo storage.

Ninteen hundred double strength heat sinks gave the Wind Dancer the ability to
simultaneously fire all of their weapon systems, a trait lacked by many ships
of the era.

The most prized quality of the Wind Dancer was, however, the massive
ferro-carbide armor plating. Nearly twelve hundred tons of the armor were
fixed to a heavily reinforced structure, giving the ships of this class the
ability to sustain damage that would cripple or destroy even a Monsoon class
Battleship. Despite the heavy armor belt (or perhaps because of it), Wind
Dancer class ships found themselves prime targets during the decades of chaos
following the Exodus.

==Variants:==
Despite having been in service for one hundred and forty-six years, there have
been no variants of the Wind Dancer. In 2782, the Confederation Navy did
suggest that the remaining Wind Dancers in service be reequiped with lamellar
ferro-carbide armor, which would increase their already formidable belt by
25%. However, due to the lack of shipyards capable of working this Star
League armor material, as well as the necessity for every function ship to
remain in the field, it is unlikely that the Confederation will be able to
carry out this refit in the near future.

==Notable Vessels & Crews:==
Only six Wind Dancer class vessels remain in service, with a seventh
approaching completion at Asuncion. AI and the High Command both hope that
vessel--the Grace of Frost--can be launched before the next Marik attack on
Asuncion.

All ships of the Wind Dancer class are given names that conjure images of
beauty, grace, and precision of movement. This rather poetical naming
practice came about when the first Wind Dancer was being commissioned into
service in 2564. Attending the ceremony was the Chancellor, several senior
members of the Confederation Navy, and dignitaries from Asuncion. Among the
dignitaries were the Poet Laureate of Asuncion--Amelia Corteza.

Before the commissioning ceremony, a party was held for the VIPs at Asuncion
Industries space-station that was building the new ship. During the event,
the star of Asuncion released a massive solar flare that streaked throughout
the system. Though the station itself was well-shielded from the radiation,
the solar wind caused it to shake and rock rather violently.

Watching the event from one of the armored glass observation decks, Senorita
Corteza was moved by the new ship. All of the other vessels in dock were
slamming against the hull of the station--but the new ship was moving in
harmony with the violence of the flare.

She cried out to the Chancellor, "Look! She strains at her mooring leashes,
eager to be out among the stars to serve the Glory of the Confederation. She
dances upon the wind of the very sun!"

Moved by her proclamation, the Chancellor then and there ordered the new ship
to commissioned into service as the Wind Dancer--and that all subsequent ships
of the class be named in the same style.

So was born the Wind Dancer.

==Deployment==
Wind Dancer class vessels were typically deployed in conjunction with two
Chesteron or Slava II class destroyers for long-duration border patrols during
the era of the Star League. Following the Exodus, roughly half of these
patrol groups were formed into dedicated strike groups, comprising two Wind
Dancers and four Chestertons and/or Slava IIs. The Confederation Navy kept
one or two of these strike groups as nodal fast reaction forces, the remainder
were sent to create havoc among the worlds of the Federated Suns and Free
Worlds League after those powers attacked Capellan space.

With the loss of so many ships in recent years, these groups have now been all
but disbanded--only a single fast reaction group remains (deployed at Sian).
The remaining Wind Dancer class vessels are now assigned as needed to other
formations, serving as escorts for Sword class cruisers and Du Shi Wang class
Battleships, as well as undertaking independent operations.

An interesting concept. I've seen lots of missile cruiser type designs, but the heavy armor and PPCs are a big improvement. The fighter screen is a bit weak, but if the dropships are tasked with anti-fighter work and/or are fighter carriers it is adequate. The Dancer is another ship that I would really need to see in a game to get a good feel for how it performs. It is significantly different then the run of the mill cruiser.
