Just so no one thinks I'm just designing ground units, and large ships. :lol:

==Overview:==
The Raiden (“Thunderbolt”, ed) aerospace fighter was a early competitor to the
DCA's more famous Slayer heavy fighter.

Although it saw limited service during the last years of the Star League, and
during the opening volleys of the 1st Succession war, it was never as popular
as the Slayer, in no small part due to it's more sluggish handling, and the
fact that nearly all of it's armament, formidable as it inarguably was, was
ammunition based.

These factors, combined with disdainfull comments from ground crew and pilots
such as “A poor man's Stuka”, saw the design's production halted in 2815,
although the last copies lasted in service till the 2850's before being
grounded, and eventually scrapped, due to lack of spare parts.

==Capabilities:==
While the Raiden is no faster than a Stuka, and noticably slower than it's
contemporary, which she is so often compared to, namely the Slayer, the weapon
loadout is impressive.

First of all, in the nose, is mounted a lrm-20 rack, with three tons of
ammunition to go through, while the wings support a autocannon 10, while six
medium lasers, two in the nose, one in each wing, and two facing the rear
rounded out the armament loadout.

While on paper, the fighter's six tons of fuel seem to indicate a fighter that
can perform long patrols, the small ammunition amount per autocannon (only 10
shots each, ed), vere always felt to be a severe hinderance, and it was a flaw
that was never fully cured during it's service.

==Battle History:==
The only noteworthy event in the Raiden's service life was the one time a
lance of them faced a lance of Davion Stuka fighters in combat, over Kentares
V in the 1st succession war.

The fight lasted two grueling hours, with the Combine pilots refusing to back
down, even after their autocannon magazines ran dry, but it was inconclusive,
as eventually both sides ran too short on fuel to finish the fight off.

While all four fighters involved were damaged to one extent or another, none
were destroyed on either side, and both sides claimed victory.

If anything shows how closely the Raiden and the Stuka were matched, then this
fight does.

==Deployment==
Never the most popular of the DCA's aerospace fighters, the Raiden saw only
limited service. While history doesn't specify exactly how many were active at
any given time, we have ascertained that the numbers were never that many,
perhaps no more than a wing or two, even at it's peak.

Chatham would, eventually, discontinue the fighter's production due to its
unpopularity, converting the single line to produce Slayers instead.

If any exist today, Wolfnet does not know of them, and we currently rate this
as very unlikely.

You need to wait longer during the week for responses. It really does have the feel of a Stuka, which is both good and bad. The firepower is a trade off for the speed. The Slayer has always been one of my favorite designs, and I would continue to pick it over your Raiden, but I pick the Slayer over the Stuka, so no surprise there.

While I understand that all right, I'd like to counter that comparing the Stuka (and indeed the Raiden) and the Slayer is unfair to both designs.

While they are both heavy fighters, the twenty ton mass difference between the two means that by definition they will be two very different fighters. The Slayer is faster, but doesn't have as much firepower, while the Stuka is slower, but has firepower to spare.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Slayer. As a long time Wing Commander player I have always loved fast heavy fighters, what I mean is that this is closer to a bomber in that game's terms than a fighter, while the Slayer is, inarguably, a fighter.

as for the impatience, my apologies..always nervous when posting new stuff, and I am no mind reader so I can't exactly read what you guys think, good or bad, about it. (and if you see reason to criticise something I design, go ahead, but make sure you are ready to debate your case before hand)

I agree, your Raiden makes a good fighter/bomber type design, I just personally like the Slayer for a heavy fighter better. I see the need for a bomb truck type design, and the Raiden works well at that. The Cannons give enough concentrated punch to work well.

Should see the follow up once I'm done with it. This is only half of the Raiden story. :)

Entirely possible, seeing as they and the DCMS are back on speaking terms by the mid 50's on (and the refit doesn't appear till the late 60's)

edit: that's 3050's and 60's, respectively, just to make sure

I gotcha:) If you had the Dragoons in the 2950s I would be really curious.

Sometimes forget that as good as they are, they are relative new comers to the Inner Sphere. Not as long in the teeth as the MAC, or the Highlanders. :lol:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
When Chadran Arms offered Wakazashi to buy their unwanted Raiden design
specifications off them, no one at Wakazashi realized what C.A actually had in
mind.

Seeing as the fighter had not been produced in over two hundred years, not
only was Wakazashi more than willing to sell, they did so for a very
reasonable price, and indeed considered themselves to have gotten the better
of the bargain.

At least until the prototype of this deadly new version rolled out of the
factory.

==Capabilities:==
Taking the original as both a starting point, and as the basis, for the new
version, C.A. started by replacing the Raiden's original 300 standard engine
with a extra light model, which, while it did nothing to improve the fighters
handling, left a lot more tonnage free for armor, armaments, and fuel.

Speaking of the armament, this was improved upon in several ways. Starting out with a autocannon-20 in the nose in place of the missile launcher, while
the wing mounted autocannon were replaced by mrm-30 racks. For additional non
ammo based firepower, the wing mounted medium lasers were removed and replaced
with extended range large lasers, while the nose mounted ones were removed
outright, having been deemed superflouous. Just about the only thing not to be
improved in the redesign were the rear mounted mediums, as they were kept as
original, the idea to use extended range models having ultimately been
rejected on heat grounds.

While the armor was not improved upon, tonnage wise, the replacement of the
original Durallex armor with ferro aluminium armor gained the fighter a nice
boost in protection.

As a final gesture, the fighter's maneuvering jets got a complete overhaul.
While the extra maneuver jets added do nothing to improve the fighter's
athmospheric handling, which remains sluggish, they do improve it's handling
in a vacuum considerably.

Overall while the fighter remains slow, it now boasts enough armament to have
at least a equal chance against any Inner Sphere fighter of a similar tonnage,
and, presumably, enough to even give the massive Kirgiz troubles.

==Deployment==
As is so often the case, there was a reason for CA's decision to re visit one
of the Combine's least well known designs, and this was the continuing
updating of the Combine navy.

As well as going after the logistical headaches of too many ammunition types
with a battleaxe, the DCA was narrowing down the choices of aerospace fighters
onboard to as few types as possible.

This fighter is intended to be Chadran Arms's tender for the heavy space
superiority fighter niche which was one of the four types identified as a
must. The other three being a fast recon fighter, a close defense interceptor,
and a heavily missile armed fighter to tear apart dropships, or indeed
warships, for that matter.

As well as being intended for the heavy strike contract, it is also,
unusually, being offered to sale to all interested parties, as long as the DCA
okay's their purchase before hand.
