Good morning. We finish up this series today with the two medium and one heavy aerospace fighter designed and fielded by the Concordat during the War. The Phantom and Intruder (medium) and the Banshee (heavy).

The Taurian Aerospace Corps consisted predominately of the light and medium fighters, the heavy Banshee was relatively rare during the conflict. Most units of the period should be almost evenly divided between lights and mediums, with more the edge falling to the Mustangs and Skyhawks. Was it a balanced force? You have to decide.

Now, one thing I have done with my take on Concordat aerospace assets--they all have far more armor protection than similar Inner Sphere designs. You see, the Taurians could turn out equipment in good numbers, but people? It takes a long time to turn a civilian into a fighter-jock, and throughout the War, the Concordat never had enough pilots. Hence, their emphasis on birds that could bring the boys home.

Anyway, let me know what you think, guys.

First up, we have the medium-weight Phantom.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
In 2514, the Phantom medium aerospace fighter rolled out of its hanger onto
the tarmac of the Concordat Aerospace Industries airfield on Jamestown. The
first medium-weight aerospace fighter ever produced by the Concordat, the
Phantom emphasized acceleration and endurance over a heavy weapons loadout.
CAI showcased the new fighter before senior officials of the government and
top officers of the Taurian Aerospace Corps.

As the prototype streaked down the runway, and began to climb for the heavens,
little did the men and women watching know that this fighter--more than any
other that would ever serve the Concordat--would become a symbol of their
struggles.

==Capabilities:==
On a 55-ton frame, the Phantom was able to generate a maximum acceleration of
5.5-g's, while still managing to protect the aerofighter and its pilot with
thirteen and a half tons of standard armor. Five tons of fuel were provided
as well, which many in the Taurian Aerospace Corps considered the bare minimum
for a combat aerospace unit.

Weaponry was however--as in most Taurian fighters--slightly weak compared to
contemporary Inner Sphere designs. Two large lasers provided good firepower
from their mounts in the wing roots, but these weapons were the only offensive
forward-firing guns of the craft. For defensive purposes, two medium lasers
were mounted to cover the rear--one of the few areas that the Phantom exceeded
the arming conventions of the time.

However, despite the lack of secondary weapons, the Phantom mounted enough
heat sinks to allow the pilot to maneuver and fire his forward-facing guns
without worrying over heat build-up. The added reach of the large lasers also
gave the Phantom many tactical advantages over lighter craft, while its high
thrust allowed the Phantom to outmaneuver heavier craft. The heavy armor
plating also provided the pilot the opportunity to absorb battle-damage and
keep fighting.

The Phantom also benefited from its high thrust rating in its ability to carry
eleven tons of external ordnance at a maximum accel of 3-g's (ten tons at
4-g's), giving it the opportunity to serve as a strike bomber as well as a
space superiority fighter.

As typical for most Taurian aerospace fighters, the Phantom proved a simple,
reliable, and rugged vessel. Lacking many of the 'accessories' common on
Terran Hegemony birds, pilots were nonetheless impressed by its handling
characteristics and excellent cockpit visibility.

==Variants:==
The Phantom II changed the weaponry completely. All heat sinks and weapons
were removed and replaced with two LRM-15 launchers (mounted one per wing)
with two tons of ammuntion each. This variant served as a fast strike fighter
capable of engaging targets at a range where few other fighters could respond.

==Deployment==
The Phantom became one of work-horse fighters of the Reunfication War.
Capable of serving as a heavy interceptor, a dog-fighter, and a strike bomber,
it served the Concordat in nearly every system. Operated by the TDF, the TCN,
and the TAC, the Phantom participated in every fight of the war, from
Malagrotta to the last Battle of Gateway Point.

Production continued until the Surrender. When occupation troops arrived on
Jamestown, the factory there was razed to the ground, and all incomplete
fighters were confiscated by the Star League. These fighters--some two
hundred in total--served for many years as experimental testbeds before being
finally retired and scrapped in 2872.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The second medium-weight aerospace fighter of the Taurian Concordat during the
war was the Intruder--a strike fighter that was rugged and tough, while still
possessing a good armament.

First flown in 2551, the Intruder served two roles in Taurian service. First,
the Intruder proved a capable dog-fighter and medium-strike fighter. Second,
in its role as a medium bomber, the Intruder could carry thirteen tons of
ordnance and still generate enough thrust to reach orbit from the surface of
planet.

Never as common as the Phantom, the Intruder nonetheless had its own partisans
in Taurian service.

==Capabilities:==
Capable of generating a maximum thrust of 4.5-g's on a 65-ton frame, the
Intruder is actual rather typical of a Reunification War era Taurian aerospace
fighter. Emphasizing protection over raw weaponry, the Intruder carried 14.5
tons of standard armor--an extremely impressive amount, especially when
compared to contemporary designs.

More important, the Intruder continued the tradition of the Taurian Aerospace
Corps in building 'pilot-friendly' craft. Many Concordat pilots considered
the cockpit layout and systems of the Intruder was the absolute best ever
built by local industry.

Weapon was--once again--rather light when viewed against the Star League and
Davion fighters it would be engaging. Two large lasers provided the main
offensive puch, while a single LRM-10 launcher (with 24 shots) offered
long-range fire seldom found on craft from this era. Twin medium lasers were
mounted to cover the rear arc, just as with the Phantom.

The design team mounted sufficent heat sinks to all the Intruder pilots to
fire all forward mounted weaponry without entering into heat deficit. While
certainly not optimized when compared to other fighters of the War, the
Intruder was a capable and rugged craft.

==Variants:==
The Intruder II removed both large lasers and eight heat sinks, replacing them
with two more wing-mounted LRM-10's and four tons of ammunition. Four more
medium lasers were also mounted (two per wing). This version carried out
long-range strike missions, and was a very capable ground assault craft.

==Deployment==
Introduced just prior to the War, the Taurian Aerospace Corps only managed to
produce and deliver two thousand of these craft before the Surrender.
Primarily assigned to Fleet Operations and Planetary Defense, the Intruder was
often the strike fighter that took the fight to the Star League and Davion
invaders.

Escorted by Phantoms, Skyhawks, and Mustangs, these medium-weight aerofighters
delivered their ordnance time after time, in the face of enemy fire, and
returned to rearm, refuel, and do it all over again. The sheer toughness of
these craft soon earned the Intruder the nickname of the 'Iron Brick'.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The Banshee was the first heavy aerospace fighter ever produced by the Taurian
Concordat. Debuting in 2563, it formed the core of Taurian heavy air
divisions during the conflict. Remaining in production until the very last
days, it then vanished into the history books.

==Capabilities:==
Considered by many experts as the finest heavy fighter in existence at the
start of the War, the 75-ton Banshee was designed for one purpose
only--space-superiority combat. Seventeen tons of standard armor provided
nearly unparalled protection for the pilot.

Three large lasers (mounted in the nose and one per wing) and two medium
lasers (mounted in the rear) gave the Banshee a solid punch. In fact, the
design was often compared with the Eagle, a fighter with which it shared the
same main guns and speed. However, the Banshee lacked the secondary weapons
of the Eagle, and had better heat dissipation and armor protection.

Fifteen tons of external ordnance could be carried at a maximum thrust of
2.5-g's as well. This ordnance could include bombs, rocket launchers, and
fuel tanks, and enabled the Banshee to perform in a strike-bomber role.

==Variants:==
The Banshee II was the strike variant, replacing the two rear mounted medium
lasers, the two wing-mounted large lasers, and six heat sinks with a pair of
LRM-15's (mounted one per wing) and four tons of ammo. The design retained
suffiicent heat sinks to fire the remaining large laser and both LRM's, while
possessing enough ammo for a prolonged fight. It did lack any rear armament,
however. Less then six hundred Banshee II's were produced before the end of
the War.

==Deployment==
Assigned primarly to the Taurian Navy, the Banshee also saw limited service
with the Taurian Defense Force (the ground arm of the Concordat military).
There were never enough Banshee's to allow every unit that wanted them to have
them. Because the Navy was the first line of defense, the Navy had first-call
on the fighters exiting the production lines. The TDF and Planetary Defense
Commands received whatever remained.
