==Overview:==
The Amethyste class "fast carriers" are post-Jihad warships designed in the
Astral Republic. They are the successors to the RMF's Eyrie class light
carriers, which were both sunk during the Jihad.

To properly understand the Amethyste, it is first necessary to understand the
Eyrie. The Eyrie was one of the RMF's first native warship designs, and
basically was a major conversion of the old SLDF's Carrack transport into a
carrier. This use of an oversized, low massed hull made the Eyrie a bulky
target which fatally lacked both the power to engage other warships, and the
speed to evade them. 

The Amethyste addresses most of these problems, in a way which makes it
virtually unique in known space. It is a carrier with the mass and armor of a
destroyer, and the thrust of a corvette. No wonder then that the RMF has
revived the old wet navy classification of "fast carrier" to refer to thse
ships.

==Capabilities:==
The Amethyste class is designed to support battle groups as both a
multi-faceted carrier, and a heavy picket ship capable of wreaking havoc
against lighter opponents such as fighters and dropships. It is fully the size
of a destroyer at 640kt mass, and gifted with an incredible (for its size)
4G's of acceleration, enabling it to maneuver swiftly around formations and
evade more dangerous opponents.

The Amethyste's primary "weapons" are its various carried assets. These
include a complete aerospace fighter regiment (numerically matching a minimal
Clan cluster of three binaries), a shuttle squadron, two dropships, and a full
armored marine battalion for heavy boarding actions.

For self-defense, the Amethyste is armed with corner turrets carrying quad
NL/55's to bracket targets and swat fighters, and twin AR-10 launchers which
provide solid firepower for minimal heat and weight. Twin Barracudas can crack
the armor thresholds of all but the toughest dropships, while the critical
threat of White Sharks keeps enemy warships wary. These capital weapons are
backed by the RMF's standard rings of ERPPC's, AMS and screen launchers.

The Amethyste's primary defense is its high thrust, which it uses to dictate
the terms of battle. It can maneuver swiftly to bring its heavy weapons to
bear in any direction, or to evade superior opponents; if the Amethyste
decides to retreat, most foes have little hope of catching it. The Amethyste
also has enough armor on all faces to blunt NAC/20 rounds, a point where the
Eyrie class was notably lacking. The effect on enemy morale of seeing such a
large ship shedding fire as it maneuvers almost like a giant fighter, cannot
be understated. 

Like all RMF warships, the Amethyste's jump drive is equipped with a LFB and
detachable sail for maximum flexibility. It also has 180 days of fuel, 35kt of
cargo space, and four stacked grav decks to support its crew. An onboard HPG
allows the Amethyste to operate at range or in a command role, which it often
does for frigate squadrons.

==Notable Vessels & Crews:==
The Amethyste class is named in French for gemstones, and their hull schemes
include a badge and trim color matching their named stone, making them
instantly identifiable on sight. For example, the Amethyste's badge is a
purple hexagon.

The RMF uses a pennant number system similar to ancient Terran wet navies; the
Amethyste class are carriers, so they are given pennant numbers with the
letter R. R01 and R02 were the respective numbers of the ill-fated Eyrie and
Eagle, so the numbers of the Amethyste class begin with R03.
