call it "measure of desperation"
its the sort of construction a desperate local government might use to field any defense, if no high-tech and little funds are available.
they would probably name it after a local military hero, like "davy crocket".

Id try replacing the VSTOL equipment with a bit more ammo and armor, or a one-shot Tbolt.
the only trick is to get enough of this in the air before the enemy destroys the runways.

not much that could be changed, unless u want to reduce the speed rating by 1
that frees 2 tons, hard to tell if that is still enough mobility

the following ideas for eq I have:

A medium chem-laser with 7 shots
2 Tbolts

B 3 Machineguns with 75 shots
2 Tbolts

C 1 Machinegun with 75 rounds
3 Tbolts

D medium Chem laser with 7 shots
1 machinegun with 100 shots
1 Tbolt

E 2 medium Chemlasers with 15(?) shots

the Tbolts are all One-shot. any Tbolt could be replaced with a OS-RL 15 or Two OS-RL 10

A two-point speed advantage was deemed decisive, somewhere; Thrust-6 is a de facto standard for ASFs.

I think I have something close to this with ~4 MGs on the nose, and 77 rounds total

I wonder if it would be possible to alter a CF to be able to operate from grass-patches.
if I recall it correctly craft like the mig-15 were able to do so.

such a change would allow to operate from anything that is sufficiently flat and solid, including Highways.
this would make it hard to impossible to stop it from operating by destroying the runways.

such a modification might not weigh 10% like VSTOL, but only 5%....and one ton is one ton is one ton.

btw: in Germany in a few places the Autobahn is constructed in a way that the two sides are connected by an additional stripe of concrete, the separation between lanes could be removed and there were parking-lots with extra wide entrances on each end.
not to forget that the autobahn is perfectly straight there. I could tell you wich purpose this places had, but then I would have to eliminate you.

It gets better: If you don't do that 180 in the same hex, you've changed altitude, which has it's own implications for your nose armor … :rotate:

Annnd I've just figured out "everything on this page, being thrust-8, needs 9 on the nose, and 3+ everywhere else, rather than what HMAs' default layout."

See: Thrust-8 means SI 8, which would take 2 damage from a 5-point strike; Then you cover with armor …

So three armor will prevent cour'ing by three medium pulses, and a 9 armor would stop 5 medium p-lasers from doing so.

This does suggest I should try harder to mount Laser Reflective … :thinker:

But yeah: Re-arrange all the armor listings so there's 9 on the nose, 3 on each wing, and 3~5 on the aft. :wink:

I wonder how that plays, with just one ton of fuel and 13 shots of ammo.
I think RATO and one ton of external fuel might be helpful, with the extra ton being jettisoned for full agility before the actual fight.

the RATO I imagine similar to the starting system that was intended for the F-104 starfighter. This system enabled the F-104 to start without an airfield.
in this case it is not used to start without an airfield(also that comes as a bonus) but to accelerate the fighter towards its target without wasting the precious fuel.

another way to use a rocket-start is similar to the german "Natter". in this case the fighter is started from a vertical rail into the allied bombers to then attack as a glider.
to start a jet-fighter in a similar way would allow for much more effect, as the jet-fighter has more control and, in this case, can fire 13 times as opposite to the "natter" wich can only fire once.
