| Post subject: | ProtoMechs & Stealth Armor ? |
I know ProtoMechs can not use Stealth Armor @ present I guess it's a heat issue as heat sinks need to be carried ?, but could Stealth Armor be a custom armor item on ProtoMechs ? and heat be ignored the same as on Battle Armor which has Stealth Armor ?. The reason I'm asking is I just seen a topic over on CBT forums asking about this & I'm interested on your opoinions. Thanks. Dave.

Well, leaving aside the sentiment that Protos are already enough of a pain in the backside WITHOUT stealth armor... I don't see any reason why it would be impossible to fit a Proto with stealth armor, except that it doesn't seem very Clanlike. Then again, it could be argued that Protos aren't very Clanlike anyway, so that brings us back to square one. Stealth armor on Protos would probably be more like a scaled-up version of BA stealth armor, due to the heat issues and need for an ECM unit of BattleMech stealth armor. Also, the Clans do not use BattleMech stealth armor; that's a dezgra stravag Spheroid thing. There could be your overriding argument for why Protos shouldn't have stealth armor...because the Clans either haven't developed it, or they consider the idea dishonorable, or both. |

Good Points, I'm sorry to say the Clans Do use stealth armor on Battle Armor see TRO3075 Aerir PA(L) for 1 (if the only 1 I can think of). As that does not use a ECM would a ProtoMech system ?. Dave. |

As I said, I think a Proto stealth armor system would likely be based on the Clans' BA stealth armor systems, so no, I don't think it wouldn't need its own ECM unit for that purpose. There would need to be some kind of compromise, though, to keep the stealth armor balanced...internal space taken up or something.As that does not use a ECM would a ProtoMech system ?. Dave. As I typed that last line, it struck me that the Clans have/had knowledge of the SLDF's Null-Sig Systems. Perhaps they could develop Proto stealth armor based on that technology. Of course, that raises the question of why the Clans don't use stealth or Null-Sig on Mechs, but I think Karagin provided us the answer to that in another thread: Mechs are too big and loud. Protos are smaller, and therefore better able to make use of stealth. But of course, we are left with the question, WOULD the Clans do it? How would stealthy units fit into the Clan rules of battle and their sense of honor? I don't know... |

I fall back on a statement I made way back when Huntress fell to the new SLDF and all of the nations of the Inner Sphere had troops and spies and all that fun stuff there, who is to say that the tech for the protos hasn't ended up in the hands of one of the IS nation-states and thus say Laio, since we are talking about their mis-named Stealth Armor, when it is more of what should be simple part of the ECM standard rules IMVHO and not armor at all, is field these things? I am sure that given the right uhmm...push Laio's researcher and the rest could get something working and thus add the Protos for what ever they are really worth to the weapons of House Laio... |

That's certainly 1 way to do this  , now how the heck do I get HMLite to show Stealth Armor ? even as a custom item ?..Dave. |

That would be a question for Rick. I haven't done much with HMLite myself, since I don't play Clan very often and I rarely use Protos when I do. Rocs painted up in Jade Falcon greens look nice and characterful, but that's about it for me because I think the whole concept behind Protos is broken. |

Instead of a stealth system how about the chamelion like system used by Com/Blake on their Purifier BA? |
