[Author's Note: The following designs are part of my revision of the history of the Clans, along with many other of the Goliath Scorpion designs I have previously posted. In this universe, the Clans begin Revival already having several new pieces of technology--AP Gauss, HAG, ATM, Artemis V, ProtoMechs, to name a few--that in the official timeline are not developed until the 3060's or later. The Clans themselves have been rewritten as well, with the largest and most powerful seeing a reduction in capabilities and the smaller 3rd rate Clans experiencing a power boost. I have done this because--in my humble opinion--the small Clans seem TOO small, and the most powerful Clans too big to exist given the society and culture we are told that the Clans have. Anyway, enough of my rantings, so on to the ProtoMechs of Clan Goliath Scorpion. Enjoy!]

After Clan Smoke Jaguar scientists pioneered the development of the ProtoMech in 3042, the remaining Clans began to reverse engineer the new technology as they captured Protos or design schematics in trials across the length and breadth of Clan space. Although more conservative Clans--such as Jade Falcon and Ghost Bear--were wary of suddenly thrusting an unknown element into their already formidable toumens, others were determined to begin to deploy protos in large numbers, in order to gain a sizable increase in combat capacity for the lowest possible expenditure of resources.

The Goliath Scorpions were in the camp of those who were not quite certain what to make of the new units, but in 3044 they began a research and development program around a half-dozen or so assorted ProtoMechs taken as isorla. Three years later, the first prototypes of the Gremlin, Imp, and Sidhe were fielded for testing. Already heavy in Elemental forces, the Scorpions needed to fit the new Protos into their existing formations with a minimum of disruption; and since the judgement of the Scorpion warriors over the new machines was not yet made, they decided upon a very simple substitution within their highly regimented Cluster formations. Each Guard Trinary of the Cluster contained five OmniMechs and two stars of Elementals--a powerful defensive force, but one who speed on the offensive was limited by the two Stars of Elemental infantry. With the introduction of the ProtoMech, the Guard Trinarys were converted to consist of one Star of OmniMechs, a second of Elementals, and a third of ProtoMechs, giving each Cluster 25 of the new units.

Defensively, Guard Trinarys were still formidable, but now each had the ability to maneuver at the same speed and mobility as the remainder of the Cluster (provided that the Elemental star rode the OmniMechs into battle). These new formations would soon prove themselves as magnificient force multipliers in multiple engagements leading up to the trials for participation in Operation Revival.

The ProtoMechs developed by Scorpion scientists were based on a single common 9-ton chassis--the largest possible ProtoMech unit. Although more expensive and consuming of resources than lighter Protos, the design teams selected this chassis in order to provide acceptable levels of firepower, mobility, and armor protection--citing the weakness of some of the original Jaguar designs in their arguments to the Council of the Blood-named. The Council and the Khans agreed, and the ProtoMech project was off to the races.

Besides sharing the common chassis, all three Scorpion protos would also share the same weight and distribution of armor protection. Each unit carried 1,850 kilograms of advanced composite armor; while this was not the heaviest possible amount of armor for a 9-ton chassis, the design team considered it adequete for most combat missions.

The Imp was the first Proto introduced, entering field trials in 3047 among the Scorpion Dragoon Clusters. This proto proved itself as a fast-moving and lethal combatent early in the field trials and began to earn the respect of rank-and-file Scorpion Warriors. With a maximum ground speed of 118.8 kilometers per hour, the Imp could maintain pace with the Sand Devils and Death Weavers of Dragoon Guard Trinarys; and yet it retained a sizable weapons payload as well. The primary weapon consisted of an ER Medium Laser carried in the main gun weapons mount, with a secondary missile pack built into the torso chassis as a back-up weapon. The ER Medium gave the Imp credible range and damage--especially when pilots of the new war-machines discovered for themselves how powerful a point of Imps concentrating fire against a single opponent could be. The four-tube SRM launcher contained only a single missile salvo--but that allowed a full-strength point to fire twenty SRMs against a single foe in a missile strike that could only be described as devastating. Point commanders had to carefully judge the moment when a salvo could be justified, but the additional firepower was a welcome addition.

Introduced in 3048 and intended for service in the heavy Cuirassier Clusters, the Gremlin used a smaller power core to acheive a lower maximum ground speed--97.2 kilometers per hour. However, this proved more than enough to maintain pace with the Desert Tigers and Sand Devils of the Clusters Guard Trinary. Like the Imp, the Gremlin featured no jump-jets, but Scorpion commanders did not believe that this lack would seriously hinder deployment of the new units. As with the Imp, an ER Medium Laser in the main gun slot provided the primary weapon, but in the case of the Gremlin a six-tube SRM launcher provided the back-up. Lack of space prevented the storage of more than a single missile salvo, but this still allowed a point of Gremlins the ability to fire thirty SRMs against a single foe. The reduction in size of the engine core actually reduced the resource cost of the Gremlin as well, making this model of Scorpion proto as the least expensive fielded to date.

Finally, the Sidhe was first deployed in the fall of 3048. This model has proven to be one of the fastest protos ever designed, with a maximum ground speed of 129.6 kilometers per hour. Integrated with the fast-moving Hussar Clusters of the Clan, the Sidhe proved itself a vital component of mobile war in conjuction with the Death Weavers and Hooded Eagles of the Hussar's Guard Trinary. In order to mount the powerful engine core that allowed the Sidhe to attain this rate of speed, the design team was forced to remove all secondary weapon systems. However, the ER Medium Laser of the Imp and Gremlin was retained, providing a powerful force multiplier to the light Clusters of Clan Goliath Scorpion.

Field testing of all three protos revealed the full-range of lethality of these designs, and by 3054, every Cluster in the Clan's toumen had been outfitted. Despite calls for additional ProtoMechs, the Council of the Blood-named and the Khans have stood by their earlier decision to include just one Star of ProtoMechs in each Cluster, supporting the OmniMechs, Elementals, and OmniFighters, but not overshadowing them. This decision has given the Scorpions exceptional and highly mobile combined arms formations with a deadly sting. As of 3054, there are three hundred Gremlins, three hundred Imps, and one hundred and fifty Sidhe on active duty service with Clan Goliath Scorpion.

OS missile systems are not available to ProtoMech's now.

I was not aware that OS and I-OS systems were no longer available for protos. W.T.F.?!?

You can install a missile system that REQUIRES a magazine and missile feed, but not individual missile tubes without the bulky reloading equipment? It makes no sense, and therefore will not be used in my campaign or universe.
