Code: Classic BattleTech Battle Armor Technical Readout * CUSTOM EQUIPMENT Type/Model: Striking Claw Tech/Era: Clan / 3050 / CBT Rules Chassis Type: Humanoid Weight Class: Medium Battle Armor (751 - 1,000 kg) Rules: Level 2, Custom design Ground Speed: 10.8 km/h Jump Capacity: 90 meters Armor Type: Standard ==Overview:== One of the most important areas of the Goliath Scorpion Research and Development programs prior to the launch of Operation Revival was the upgrade of existing Elemental battle armor. As a Clan whose toumen is Elemental-heavy in composition, the Khans and the Council of the Blood-Named recognized that to overlook the Clans basic infantry elements would be both unwise and foolish. The development of the AP Gauss Rifle in the early 3040s was the breakthrough needed to revitalize the Elemental arm of the Clan. With a new and lightweight weapon system at their disposal, prototype design and construction began at a fever pitch. By 3043, the first of the new suits was ready for testing. Passing the board with flying colors, the Striking Claw class Elemental Battle Armor was rapidly approved for full-scale production. Unlike the new OmniMechs and OmniFighters, the Clan immediately began to field Striking Claws to replace Standard Elemental Armor. By the time Operation Revival was launched, all of the Clans Elemental arm had been reequipped with either this new suit of armor or its long-ranged cousin, the Burning Sting. ==Capabilities:== Clan scientists began the redesign from the heart of the standard Elemental battle armors exoskeleton, using advanced construction techniques to reduce some of the bulk of previous suits of armor, making it sleeker in appearance. Although the Striking Claw can wear a number of different camo or review paint schemes, the surface of armor was formed in such a manner to resemble the carapace of the Goliath Scorpion. Slightly raised plates of armor are seperated with a depressed trough. Techs who repaint these suits are careful to use a slightly lighter color on the troughs, giving these suits a more organic appearance than that of Standard Elemental armor. The color scheme for dress review, and the one always worn by Elementals assigned to the Khan's Keshik, is reflective jet black on the large scales, while the spaces between are a darkened grey with highlights of gold. The helmet has a different shape and instead of a single large visor, there are two smaller ones that are surrounded with golden dagger-stars identicial in all but size to the ones that adorn the ceremonial armor's helmet. A plume of black horse secured with crimson ribbon completes the dress review scheme. The main weapon--capable of being placed on either the right or left arm at the wearer's preference--was one of the newly developed AP Gauss Rifles. Capable of three times the range of existing Battle Armor guns, while retaining the efficiency of a machine-gun versus infantry and the raw damage potential of a small laser versus armor and 'Mechs, this potent weapon alone would have been a major improvement in Elemental tactics and deployment. Fed from a belt attached to an ammunition drum carried on the back--beneath the detacheable missile pack--the APG can fire up to forty bursts before exhausting its onboad ammunition supplies. Above the ammunition pack rests a detacheable missile pack. This unit carries a four-tube SRM launcher, but no reloads, and is designed to be jettisoned after firing in order to increase the Striking Claws mobility and agility. Although the missile pack possesses but half the endurance of standard Elemental armor, it also delivers twice the payload in a single massive salvo. Departing from standard Clan practice, the Scorpions also equipped their new Elemental armor with support systems. A high-intensity search-light was built into the left shoulder (right shoulder on suits where the weapons were swapped) and the battle-claw equipped left arm featured two secondary weapons (a sub-machine gun and a Mark XX laser rifle) as well as a cutting torch (these systems were also swapped if the left arm was selected as the posistion of the APG). Despite the new systems and capabilities, armor protection remained at the same high level found on standard Elemental body armor. Warriors outfitted with the Striking Claw were impressed, citing the increased range of the APG as the single best improvement--although the quad one-shot pack was also favourably received. ==Variants:== The Burning Stinger is the long-range support variant of the Striking Claw. This model retains the armor, mobility, AP Gauss, and secondary support systems of that set of battle armor. There are two major differences, however. The detacheable missile pack is configured to hold three long-range missiles--once again with no reloads. Although this does decrease available firepower, maximum range is greatly increased. Second, the left arm (or right, as the case may be) battle claw was replaced with a heavy battle claw that can deliver more damage when the Elemental swarms an opponent. ==Deployment== A typical Scorpion Elemental Star consists of three points (15 Elemental warriors) wearing Striking Claw suits and two points (10 Elemental warriors) wearing Burning Stinger suits. Both are nice improvements over the original, and have more flavor then the Clan Battle Armor version ported over from the DA. So with all the upgrades what are you planning for the Creepy Crawlies? |
