It is a blah design to me, but I can see it coming in handy when facing infantry formations, or on extended missions. What clan ws it the Vipers who field giant PBI formations in garrisons? This guy would eat infantry clusters for lunch.

Yup, anti-infantry use......though, yes it could be lot better if it didn't have the partial wing, that 3,000 kg could be put to better use

The question is what is the extra jump worth? Can you build this as a lighter/faster unit with similar weapons and armor and more native speed? Probably. When I get home this evening I'm going to play around with a 5/8/5 version in the 8 or 9 ton range and see if I can hammer out a competitor. To pull out the Ultra card I think you need to bring something to the filed that you can't replicate with a basic Proto, but that's just my viewpoint.

Cool, can't wait to see what you come up with

Building it as a 15 ton mech dropping the wing and using an XL engine, I was able to come up with something very similar...guess there are better things the heavier protomechs, then again never did like the whole protomech idea as given to us by Nystul...

Ok, I'm tired, so this is basic. This is faster, but has a shorter jump range. I also switched out MGs for the Micros. You loose the energy only quality, but it is a "standard" Proto, and of similar capabilities.

AP Gauss Rifles would be a good fit as well.

The problem I see with Ultra Protomechs is reinforced by Karagin's example. If the idea of a Proto/Ultra Protomech is to make a bridge unit that can save resouces compared to a full sized mech. When you get to this weight class with Protos you can field a heavy mech tonnage wise, and a decent garrison mech C-Bill wise in the place of Protos. Since Protos and thier pilots rarely get the respect of a frontline warror anyway, would you field a point of these or a SLDF vintage mech or two in it's place?

Then you get to the old Roadrunner type mechs, sub 20 tonners that pack enough punch and speed to burn you.
