It has a really big stick.
Code:
Classic BattleTech Battle Armor Technical Readout
                            VALIDATED

Type/Model: Sarissa
Tech/Era: Inner Sphere / 3085 / CBT Rules
Chassis Type: Humanoid
Weight Class: Medium Battle Armor (751 - 1,000 kg)
Rules: Level 2, Custom design

Ground Speed: 32.4 km/h
Armor Type: Advanced

==Overview:==
Based on the Free Worlds League's Longinus battle armour, the
Sarissa began deployment to Republic forces in 3083. Existing
trade agreements between Corean and Irian allowed the Republic
early access to battle armour components, eventually leading to a
new Longinus (sub) design. Interestingly, there have been
complaints from the Draconis Combine regarding this new Longinus:
it appears that their Void suit has a 'Strike' production variant
being sold to the Republic which shares much with the new Longinus
model.

In truth, the Combine outmaneuvered both Corean Enterprises and
IrianTechnologies. They threw their full support into the earlier
parts contracts which included all the components necessary to
build their Void Strike. This was after several breaches into
Corean's databases that held the Longinus' new specifications.
Republic interest was drawn to the Draconis Combine's
Ishikawa-Harima first, with hastily modified Void frames (with the
capability to accept Clan Elemental warriors, a great selling
point) before CE or IT's secretive tests were completed.

Outmaneuvered, again, by the Combine for their longterm benefit,
the Republic acted swiftly with a compromise. The Voids would be
supplied to the Republic Elementals lacking suits first, then
distributed to the rest of the forces as necessary. The
Longinus-based model would then take over after the initial 5-year
exclusive production contract with Ishikawa ran out. Ishikawa
would make available a portion of their annual production runs for
sale to the Republic as replacements.

To resolve all confusion in the matter, the battle armour would be
cosmetically altered and renamed.

==Capabilities:==
The newly dubbed "Sarissa" (harkening to the Longinus' origins)
was the product of several compromises made with the latter
Longinus models. The inability to jump without first firing or
detaching SRMs was just too great a liability in the flexible
field of battle armour warfare. With its heaviest (and longest
ranging) weapon gone, the Longinus was nothing more than a
slightly better-protected standard suit. Coupled with the
dwindling supplies of advanced composites that often sent squads
of half-protected Longinus' out to fight, the Sarissa's
development was all but necessary.

The Sarissa is interesting in that it carries just enough armour
to survive a hit from its own main weapon: a medium laser. Housed
in the reinforced right arm, the weapons (all provided by Diverse
Optics from the Combine) offers a tremendous advantage against all
other in its class. Coupled with the requirement to be "highly
mobile" is the clause of being "vari-mechanized", hence the use of
magnetic clamps that alow the Sarissa to hold on to any land
machine it can't grip on with its battle claw.

==Deployment==
Proving itself a capable combatant, the Republic later amended its
original compromise by requesting Combine made parts to be
integrated into the Corean/Irian models. Whether its due to their
close working relationship with the Nova Cats or the Kuritans' own
hard-won expertise, the components used in the original Void
Strikes are of a higher quality and reliability in the field.
Their Elemental-accomodating frames are also more easily repaired,
and can make use of Clan composites supplied by the Diamond Sharks
(through the Nova Cats).

Most choose to bolster the protection of the suit by using
standard Clan composites, which would allow them to shrug off a
large laser hit. Others, notably Elementals, choose to use basic
stealth composites from the Nova Cats. This allows a Firedrake
Support Needler to be mounted in the left arm. This is the
sub-variant the DCMS and Nova Cats seems to be fielding.

The Void Strike, in its original form, since 3093 has been
available for purchase by any interested party in the Inner
Sphere. Its exclusivity (as the Sarissa) expired on 3090, but
troubles within the Combine prevented its sale to outside parties
till its resolution.

Interesting design. You rarely see a big gun battle armor, and never see one that can move. These suits could really form the big guns of an infantry formation, allowing well equipped militia to stiffen against armor or even the occassional mech. Did you ever stat out the variants?
