By the middle of the Jihad, after numerous campaigns against both Free Worlds and Blakist forces, the Lyran military inherited a significant number of salvaged and captured HRC-LS-9000 Hercules heavy BattleMechs. Although a promising design, the Hercules lacked the firepower and staying power typical of other Lyran designs. To address these deficiencies and enable the Hercules to better compete with existing heavy Lyran designs, the Lyran military developed a common Hercules refit design, the HRC-LS-9000S Bellerophon.

Although technically a refit, the Bellerophon strips the Hercules down to its bones and requires extensive, permanent repair facilities to complete -- the Bellerophon is not a simple field refit. The Bellerophon replaces the Hercules' 350-rated extralight engine and standard myomer with a 280-rated light fusion engine and triple-strength myomer. This substantially boosts the Bellerophon's survivability and affordability while still allowing the Bellerophon to match the Hercules top speed of over 85 kilometers per hour, when needed. The Bellerophon's structure and armor are otherwise almost identical to the Hercules, utilizing the same Northrup standard chassis, an extra half-ton of nearly maximized Aldis ferro-fibrous armor, and cellular ammunition storage.

With the mass savings from the smaller engine, the Bellerophon is able to mount much heavier main guns than the Hercules. The Hercules' extended-range particle cannon is upgraded to a heavy particle cannon and the LB10-X autocannon upgraded to an LB20-X autocannon. Although somewhat shorter-ranged than the Hercules, the Bellerophon's main guns nearly double the firepower, armor penetration, and weakness-seeking capabilities of the Hercules' main guns, while adding head-capping capabilities that the Hercules never possessed.

The Bellerophon also makes changes to the Hercules secondary weapons, partly to best manage its heat levels and triple-strength myomer activation, but also to mount more effective equipment and remove ammunition vulnerabilities. For close combat, the Bellerophon replaces the Hercules' left-arm mounted pulse medium laser with an extended-range model, and also replaces the Hercules' left torso-mounted, twin Streak missile tubes with dual extended-range medium lasers. At point-blank range, the Bellerophon can also utilize triple-strength myomer-enhance physical attacks, including a decapitating attack from its left battlefist. Anticipating that the large numbers of conventional infantry and unarmored Manei Domini fielded by the Blakists posed a large threat than missile salvos, the Bellerophon trades the Hercules' torso-mounted anti-missile system for a small pulse laser. With the forward-mounted small pulse laser, the Bellerophon downgrades the Hercules' ineffective, rear-mounted small pulse lasers to standard models, reducing the amount of mass dedicated to them while retaining a minimal capability for precision heat management and triple-strength myomer activation.

Cool back story, too.

I like the idea a lot. The Hercules has never impressed me. I've used it a few times, but it just never gelled for some reason-the speed with the LB and ER PPC should be a winner....

Ah, the Hercules. Like the previous poster, I have found that it works well enough mechanically, but there's something aesthetically missing that I just don't get about it. This version is interesting, although if I was going to mount back lasers, I would put something a little bigger than two smalls. Other than that, it looks usable enough.
