==Overview:==
First launched in 2340, the Wildcat class corvettes provided the backbone of
the Concordat's complement of light patrol ships for 256 years, from the
inception of the Taurian Navy to the final Day of Surrender in the
Reunification War. Serving not only the Concordat, but also the Magistracy of
Canopus and the Outworlds Alliance, the Wildcat proved to be a solid, reliable
ship. With 3-g's of accleration, good armament, excellent armor protection
for such a light vessel, and the ability to deploy eight fighters (a
full-strength Taurian Air Wing), this ship served the Taurian Concordat with
honor.

==Capabilities:==
A two hundred thousand ton design, the Wildcat mounts four powerful engines
giving the ship a safe thrust of 2-g's and a maximum thrust of 3-g's, the
equal of the Star League Vincent class, the primary Star League corvette of
the Reunification War.

Setting the standard for all future Taurian corvettes and destroyers, the
Wildcat has no docking collars, but does carry eight aerospace fighters and
two small craft. Two seperate hanger bays (to port and starboard) prevent a
single lucky hit from disabling all of the Wildcat's parisite complement.
With six launch bay doors, ship's of the Wildcat class are able to rapidly
deploy their parasites much more rapidly than other similar ships of the era.

One hundred and ninty-eight tons of standard armor are provided for the
design; an amount that provides 38% greater armor protection than the Vincent
class--a design more than twice the mass of the Wildcat. Two contra-rotating
eighty-five meter diameter grav decks were provided to maintain crew fitness
and health on the long patrols Wildcat class vessels take across Concordat
space.

Sufficient supplies, food, water, and spare parts have been laid in to give
the one hundred and twenty-seven officers and crew, fifty marines, and
thirty-three passengers a maximum deployment time of one hundred and eighty
days--six months. Fuel bunkerage also provides for slightly more than 182
days of a 1-g thrust--though since the aerospace fighters and small craft
share the main fuel tankage, this is reduced in actual operations. Six
thousand, five hundred and forty-three tons of cargo space provide additional
volume to store munitions, supplies, and spare parts--this is in addition to
the five thousand tons devoted to spare part storage.

As an early design of the Concordat, the Wildcat features a 'keep it simple'
design for the primary and secondary armaments. Eight Jankowski Mark II Class
20 Naval Autocannon provide the main punch of this little ship. Each
Jankowski cannon is mounted to cover a different arc of fire, giving the
Wildcat 360-degree coverage out to 720 kilometers.

All eight of the Mark II guns have an independent, armored magazine, with
fifty bursts of ammunition each. In the event that a weapon is disabled,
ammunition can be transferred between magazines; however, this evolution is
hazardous and is almost never conducted in a situation where hostile fire is
expected.

The secondary armament consists of eight Norman/Raytheon Barracuda class
capital missile launchers, also mounted one per arc. As with the Mark II
NACs, the Barracuda's each have their own missile magazine--though in this
case, each magazine contains thirty missiles. These weapons provide the
anti-fighter capability of the Wildcat, as well as extending maximum
engagement range to 900 kilometers. While not individually very powerful,
they are exceptionally accurate weapons, and can--in the right
circumstances--penetrate modern naval armor to detonate inside the opposing
vessel, causing horrific damage to the interior of the ship.

Finally, the naval engineers of the Concordat gave the Wildcat class a very
robust power supply and distribution system, as well as sufficient heat sinks
to fire all weapons simultaneously.

==Variants:==
The model shown above is the Block III, which was introduced with the TCS
Stingray in 2432. Between 2432 and 2542, all of the earlier ships were
upgraded to the Block III standard. The Block III is the Wildcat class with
which the Concordat fought the Reunification War.

The Block I consisted of the first sixteen ships of the class, beginning with
the TCS Wildcat in 2340 and ending with the TCS Tomcat in 2352. Production
ceased for eight years while work began on the design of the Block II model.

The Block I was originally armed with eight Jankowski Mark I Class 10 Naval
Autocannon and sixteen Martin-Gordan Flare Class 35 Naval Lasers. One
thousand and eighteen heat sinks were mounted to allow the Block I to fire all
weapons simultaneously. A total of 6,831 tons of cargo was provided for the
ship. Eight drop-fighters were carried, but these were primitive, and seldom
used in actual practice.

Introduced with the Fer-de-lance in 2360, the Block II was a vast improvement
over the Block I. While it retained the eight Jankowski Mark I cannons, it
replaced ten of the Martin-Gordan energy mounts with seven Norman/Raytheon
Barracuda missile launchers, mounted covering every arc except dead astern.
The remaining six naval lasers were fitted one each to the fore-quarters,
broadside, and aft-quarters firing arcs.

Six hundred and twenty-two heat sinks were mounted, once again allowing the
Fer-de-lance sub-class to fire all of their weapons simultaneously. 7,065
tons of cargo were carried by this model as well. The Block II was the first
Taurian WarShip to embark modern Aerospace fighters. The introduction of
these war machines portended a significant change in the very nature of naval
combat, though this did not occur for quite awhile yet.

By the time the Block III (the Stingray sub-class) began to be produced in
2432, all remaining Block I Wildcats had been refitted to the Block II
standard.

Technically, there is a fourth variant of the Wildcat, the Block IV. No Block
IVs were ever produced, but two--TCS Hellcat and TCS Man o' War--were
converted during the war. Both ships had taken extensive damage, and were
refitting at the Fleet Yards orbiting Samantha. The station commander ordered
both ships refitted with Improved Ferro-Aluminum armor, which provided a 26%
increase in overall armor protection, as well as one additional ton of cargo
space. Though not an official production model, both Block IV Wildcats served
during the War with distinction--indeed, Man o' War was the last surviving
Wildcat class vessel in service to the Concordat.

==Deployment==
Production of the Wildcat ceased in 2450 when the heavier and more modern
Pegasus class was selected as its replacement. By that time, forty-eight
Wildcat class corvettes had been produced, with older ships refitted on a
regular basis to keep their systems up to current TCN standards. However, as
more and more Pegasus class vessels were commissioned into service, the
Wildcat's were regretfully relegated to the inactive fleet--placed into
mothballs against an emergency the Concordat hoped it would never face. The
last Wildcat class vessel--TCS Stingray (SCT-033)--was decommissioned with
great ceremony on June 14, 2524, honoring the little ships and their crews
that had helped to build and protect the Concordat.

On March 20, 2538, eight ships of the class were reactivated and sold to the
Magistracy of Canopus to join the fourteen that had been built decades earlier
for their navy. TCS Cougar, TCS Sabretooth, TCS Bobcat, TCS Adder, TCS
Taipan, TCS Gabon, TCS Hammerhead, and TCS Piranha were refitted for service
with the Canopians. The remaining forty ships continued their long sleep.

However, by the late spring of 2560, tensions between the Concordat and what
would become the member states of the Star League were on the rise. The
Admirality of the Concordat Navy sensed the direction the winds were blowing,
and quietly began to refit and reactivate the old Wildcats. Needing every
ship and crew that they could get their hands on, those Admirals soon
regretted the decision two decades earlier to sell the eight Wildcats.

During the last half of the -60's and extending into the spring of -71, the
TCN restored all forty of the surviving Wildcat class corvettes to active
service. While their electronics was fully updated, and their weapons were
more than adequete, concerns were raised over the standard armor protection.
Unfortunately, with the Fleet expansion that occured during this same time
span, completely refitting forty ships with the new armor composites was out
of the question. And after the War erupted, the shipyards were too busy to
even consider upgrading the ships.

During the Reunification War, the forty ancient Wildcats served with honor and
distinction, participating is nearly every major campaign, as well as
patrolling the outlying systems of the Concordat, defending against Davion and
League raiders. On 17 April, 2595, the last surviving Wildcat class
Corvette--TCS Man o' War (SCT-035) was destroyed in action in the midst of the
grueling five-year long campaign of attrition to penetrate Taurian defenses in
Flannagan's Nebula.
