==Overview:==
In 2450, design engineers of the Taurian Navy finalized plans for a new
corvette to replace the two-century old Wildcat class. The first of these new
ships, TCS Pegasus would address the only major short-comings found in the old
Wildcats--complete dependence on ammunition based weapons, as well as a
lack-luster performance at extreme range combat. The resulting ship would
succeed in replacing the greatly loved Wildcat as the premier light combatent
of the Concordat Navy until the Reunification War.

Retaining the same thrust as the Wildcat--though massing 20% more--, the
Pegasus increased armor protection by 16%, retained the excellent armament,
and included eight new energy mounts that would provide a 23% increase in
firepower at ranges of up 720 kilometers, and a 250% increase in firepower at
ranges of 720-900 kilometers.

==Capabilities:==
Constructed on a two hundred and forty thousand ton frame, the Pegasus relies
upon four GE-Westinghouse KCV-147 engines to allow it to safely accelerate at
2-g's, and attain 3-g's of acceleration for brief periods. This rate of
accleration was greater than the vast majority of all Inner Sphere designs,
but the Admirality desired ships that could rapidly deploy across the length
and breadth of the Concordat.

As with the Wildcat, the Pegasus mounted no docking collars, eight aerospace
fighters, and two small craft, with the fighters and small craft in the same
two hanger arrangement featured on the older design. In fact, naval
architects copied the Wildcat's parasite bays completely, due to their
popularity among the crews of the Fleet.

Two hundred and thirty-eight tons of standard armor provided an increase in
overall armor protection of 16% over the Wildcat. While the designers had
originally intended to increase the hull's structural integrity and mount an
even greater amount of armor, computer simulations showed the added structure
would obstruct weapons systems, electronics runs, and crew access to various
maintenance points. Because of that, the engineers agreed to reduce their
ambitions.

Two grav-decks and supplies for a 180-day patrol were considered standard, as
was the seventy-two hundred tons of fuel, in six individual, armored fuel
bunkers distributed across the ship. Six thousand tons were dedicated to the
storage of spares and tools, while the cargo hold was capable of stowing
another seven thousand, seven hundred and forty-three tons. Accomodations
were provided for one hundred and forty-three crew, fifty marines, and
forty-seven passengers.

As with the Wildcat, the main guns of the Pegasus are the eight Jankowski Mark
II Class 20 Naval Autocannons, each with a 50-round ammunition magazine, with
eight Norman/Raytheon Barracuda class capital missile launchers (with 30
missiles each) providing anti-fighter capability. These weapons are even
spaced acrossed the ship, providing solid firepower at all targets in every
direction. In addition to these two weapon systems, the Pegasus also mounts
eight Martin-Gordan Blinder Class 45 Naval Lasers, arranged one per arc, just
like the NACs and missile launchers. These weapons have a direct-fire range
of 900 kilometers, and since they do not require munitions, give the Pegasus
the capability for orbital fire-support for extended periods of time. While
the older Wildcat could provide fire-support from orbit, few captains would
risk depleting munitions bunkers he might need against hostile ships in order
to do so.

The Pegasus also had a very expansive power grid and heat dissipation system.
A total of eleven hundred and twenty heat sinks allow the ship to fire all of
its weapons simultaneously. The ability to do this is not common to most
Inner Sphere designs. However, the Taurians believed that if war came, then
they would be outnumbered. And a weapon that can't be fired is nothing more
than dead weight on a ship. That view--held mostly by line
officers--outweighed the arguments that most ships seldom had the need to fire
more than two or three of their weapon arcs at once--held mostly by staff
officers.

The proponents of more weapons, fewer heat sinks actually appealed to the
Protector during the design of the Pegasus. Protector Calderon decisively
sided with the line officers (his own daughter was at the time commanding the
Wildcat class vessel Copperhead). In addition, he ordered that all future
Concordat designs incorporate enough sinks to allow all weapons to fire at the
same time. Speaking decades later to a historian, he said the following.

"It's obvious, you would think. I mean, you might only be outnumbered and
surrounded once during your career, but that once might mean your death if you
can only fire at half of the guys shooting at you! Idiot arm-chair theorists,
with their 'elegant' design philosophies. Can rot for all I care for their
'elegance'; give me a ship designed to fight, and to win. That's what we
need. The Inner Sphere can have all the 'elegance' they want. I'll take
victory."

==Variants:==
On June 14, 2524, the last Pegasus class ship was commissioned into the
service. TCS Warlock (SCT-096) replaced the Wildcat class TCS Stingray
(SCT-033), and the Pegasus class became the sole active duty corvette of the
Concordat Navy.

At that time, a recession had impacted the Concordat economy, and further
ship-building was placed on hold. The forty-eight Pegasus class ships
performed patrol duties across the systems of the Concordat, escorted Fleet
auxiliaries, and conducted war games with the rest of the Fleet. But clouds
were on the horizon, for the Concordat and the Pegasus class.

Following the Naval Review of 2560, the Admirality began to quietly expand the
Fleet. Preperations were made to restart construction of the Pegasus
class--most Taurian officers operated under 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'
philosophy. However, in 2561, just as the Concordat was about to place orders
with four shipyards for an additional thirty-two Pegasus class vessels,
Taurian intelligence 'acquired' the technology to construct Improved
Ferro-aluminum Armor composite.

This composite--in use by the Terran Hegemony and many Inner Sphere powers for
over one hundred years--provided nearly a third greater armor protection for
the same weight of armor. Despite problems with the production of the new
armor, the Admirality placed the order for the thirty-two ships--all
incorporating the new armor composite. These ships were designated as the
Pegasus Block II, and would become more commonly known as the Boxer class.

Problems arose during this time for the Navy, however. The Concordat found
itself facing a serious lack of infrastructure. During the recession (almost
a depression) of the -20's and -30's, the Navy had focused on maintaining
their Fleet strength--at the expense of the yards. Considerable work had to
be done to prepare the yards for the troubled times ahead. It was 2568 before
the first of the Block II Pegasus class were able to be laid down, and 2570
before TCS Boxer entered service.

When the War began in earnst, both Pegasus and Boxer class ships served with
distinction, throughout the Concordat. Only twenty-six of the thirty-two new
Boxer class were completed before the Concordat was forced to surrender in
2596.

The Block II retained the same thrust, parasites, and armament as the Block I
model. With the introduction of Improved Ferro-Aluminum Armor, overall armor
protection increased by 21%. Despite a concerted effort to refit the older
Pegasus ships to the new Boxer standard, the shortage of building/refit slips
and bottlenecks on the production of the new armor resulted in only twenty-one
receiving the armor upgrade before the conclusion of the war.

==Deployment==
Pegasus class vessels served throughout the Concordat and participated in
every campaign of the War. While normally used as escort for convoys and
auxillary vessels, many Pegasus (and later Boxer) class ships found themselves
in ship-to-ship actions with the Federated Suns and the Star League.

Despite being the most numerous ship class in the Concordat, there were never
enough Pegasus/Boxer class vessels for all the required missions. As the War
progressed, patrol ships were recalled from more distant systems to join the
main Battle Fleet protecting the core systems. Piracy began to become a
problem for Concordat systems for the first time in over a century as the
border patrols were diverted.

By the final five years of the War, the few surviving Pegasus and Boxer class
vessels were assigned to the Fleet command defending Flannagan's Nebula. The
Star League knew of only one jump point into the Nebula, and that
point--defended by shoals of asteroids mounting capital weapons, mines, and
the Fleet--became the center of a bloody five-year long campaign that bled the
Concordat Navy white.

When the Concordat finally lost the fight for Gateway Point on September 20,
2596, Marantha Calderon knew that the invasion of the ten core worlds of
Hyades was inevitable. She surrendered the Taurian Concordat on September 22
before committing suicide later that same day.

Three Pegasus and Boxer class ships survived the fighting. Two--TCS Unicorn
(SCT-060) and TCS Husky (SCT-126)--were scuttled at Prometheus Station
orbiting New Columbia to prevent capture by the Star Leage, as were all six of
the Boxer class ships still undergoing construction. The third ship, TCS
Werewolf (SCT-077) was captured by the SLDF in a boarding action during the
fall of Gateway Point. Werewolf was taken by the SLDF as a prize and served
for nearly eighty years as a training ship in the Terran system.

On August 14, 2724, following a dispute between the Protector and the First
Lord in the High Council, SLS Werewolf was removed from service and used as a
target ship in SLDF Fleet Exercises. Werewolf was utterly destroyed.
However, the ship's bronze commissioning plate had been removed beforehand,
and the First Lord presented it to the Protector, thanking her for
manufacturing such wonderful targets for the SLDF.

The plate returned home to Taurus and was placed in the Taurus Naval Museum,
as the last surviving Concordat ship of the Reunification War.
