Contest #4 will be to take any 3058 or later era mech that is not originally an upgrade of a 3025 mech, and retrograde that mech back to level one technology.

It must be based off an officially published Inner Sphere mech, and must retain its original role.

Presume cost is not an issue.

Deadline for entries is 2359 EDT on 27 April 2011.

First Entry. It's the Grand Crusader and it's a pretty simple downgrade/retrograde. After switch to an SFE, the LPL are swapped for stand large laser and the same goes for MPLs. This was over heating like a bad motor scooter, so I downsized the LRM-20s to LRM-15s with two tons of ammo each. This keeps the number of salvoes failry close though there are now less missiles flying through the air. One ton of armor was also removed, still leaving this Grand Crusader with excellent coverage. This left me enough tonnage to add ten heat sinks. This helps immensely especially at longer ranges, where you can fire both Large lasers and one LRM-15 or both LRM-15s and large laser with little worry from over heat.

A retrograde? Didn't take much to retrograde this one. Change the Rule Level and date, give it some extra Heat Sinks, added some MGs for the anti-infantry defense, and... Voila! The Sirocco SRC-1A.

==Overview:==
     In the late 3040s, Corean Enterprises MacAdams-Suharno of the Free Worlds
League decided to take another look at the four-legged 'Mech Chassis. They
upgraded their aging Goliath design, and in the early 3050s the company
introduced the Tarantula, a four-legged light scout 'Mech. To overcome the
prevailing negative stereotype of quad 'Mechs, Corean launched an ambitious ad
campaign using actual battle footage and MechWarrior testimonials. The company
also took the unprecedented step of giving a number of Tarantulas to several
premier units around the Inner Sphere. By 3057, this impressive effort paid
off, and sales of the Tarantula skyrocketed. This response persuaded Corean
that a new quad assault 'Mech should replace the aging Goliath. By early 3059,
the Sirocco was undergoing field testing.

==Capabilities:==
     The Sirocco's main firepower centers around twin Ultra-10 autocannon
produced by Imperator Weaponries. Large ammo bins mounted in each of the
'Mech's rear legs feed the autocannon. To provide additional firepower at
close range, the Sirocco adds six extended-range medium lasers. Because
four-legged 'Mech designs do not have arm-mounted weapons, the design also
incorporates two rear-facing lasers.
     For defensive purposes, an electronic countermeasures suite reduces the
effectiveness of enemy long-range scanning and surveillance equipment.
Additionally, because of the unique nature of four-legged designs, Corean
Enterprises was able to mount more armor protection than ever previously
incorporated into any 'Mech design.
     Finally, the Sirocco incorporates Capellan-produced anti-personnel pods
that mimic their Clan counterparts. Captain-General Thomas Marik agreed to
purchase the anti-infantry weapons in an effort to appease Capellan Chancellor
Sun-Tzu Liao, who is becoming increasingly irate over Marik's refusal to set a
wedding date between Sun-Tzu and Marik's daughter Isis.


==Deployment==
     Executives at Corean Enterprises realized early on that the survival of
the company's new design depended on making sure it reached the right
MechWarriors as quickly as possible. They therefore devised a contract that
allowed the Free Worlds League Military to buy the first production run at a
much-reduced cost, provided that these first Siroccos were assigned to a
premier unit. The first Siroccos off the production line have been shipped to
the Second Knights of the Inner Sphere.

Since these were on the drawing board when the Marauder was introduced I think that manufacturers would want to be able to say they are keeping the Marauder line of Battlemechs alive! Speed was reduced & some single heat sinks were added, but it is still a machine that can lay down a withering barrage of energy weapon fire as it charges at and through enemy battle lines.

It actually came out oversinked by a point, but I had to do it. If you look carefully at the critical hit table, ALL the criticals line up perfectly with the original version (just sub heat sinks for XL Engine crits and assume everything that is a "roll again" like endo steel is simply a "roll again" here).

I actually made a version that drops 3 heat sinks and replaces the AC/10 with 2 AC/5s, but IMO those criticals lining up were just too good to pass up.

Same armor distribution. Same general weapons in the same locations. Almost the same heat curve. Not quite the range, and I did have to slow it down a little (I also made a 4/6 version but it only had 11 heat sinks).

==Overview:==
     Defiance Industries has long been one of the primary driving forces
behind advancements in military technology, and not only within the Lyran
State. The corporation’s plants on Hesperus II are probably the most famous in
the Inner Sphere, but its facilities on Furillo, though unable to produce the
sheer volumes of equipment that the Hesperus plants do, are no less capable.
Furillo’s general manager, Duke Thelonius Gracchi, felt nonetheless that even
within Defiance his divisions were considered second-rate. In an effort to
boost Defiance-Furillo’s image and increase morale among his thousands of
employees, he commissioned the Uziel and personally sold the new ’Mech to
units within both the LAAF and the AFFC.

==Capabilities:==
    The initial design of the Uziel was created before the advanced
technologies in the Helm memory core became available for common use. As a
result the original model and prototype was constructed with conventional,
time proven technologies. A Krupp model 32 large laser in each arm provides
the main striking power, although firing both lasers continously will rapidly
cause the unit to overheat dangerously, as the mech only carries 12 single
heat sinks. however with proper fire discipline this issue can be alleviated.
short range firepower is provided by a TharHes 4 short range missile four pack
with 25 reloads and a Krupp model 3 machinegun with ammunition sufficent for
100 bursts. 8 tons of Maximillian 100 armor plating provides adequate
protection on par with other mechs in it's weight class, while the 250 Magna
fusion engine and five Rawlings 50 jump jets offer mobility equal to it's
competitors.
The UZL-1S model never saw production, with the clan invasion opening up a
flood of new technology on the market, making the original design primative to
compete in the market. When Defiance Industries ressurected the project at the
end of the clan invasion, the design was modernized, and the original
prototypes used as testbeds for adapting new technologies.

==Variants:==
     The Uziel is not a groundbreaking BattleMech design, especially when
compared with some of the new designs to come out of Hesperus II. It does,
however, incorporate several newly developed weapon systems into an effective
combat package. The main production version is designed for ’Mech units that
specialize in harassment. Its LB 2-X autocannon gives it the ability to reach
out and damage an enemy from extreme ranges. Though the weapon does relatively
little damage, it is ideal for hit-and-fade tactics, arresting the enemy’s
attention and either driving them into a trap or simply harassing them from
afar. The Uziel, however, is not primarily a ranged-attack ’Mech. It mounts a
battery of various-class lasers as well as an SRM 6 launcher, giving it a
short-range barrage that is tough to beat in an Inner Sphere ’Mech of its
size. 
     Though the Furillo plant and its Uziel are still looked down upon by many
within both the LAAF and Defiance, the ’Mech was in great demand during the
Fifteenth Battle for Hesperus. With Furillo just two jumps away, forces on
both sides of the fight clamored for reinforcements while Defiance’s board of
directors demanded that Gracchi send as many new ’Mechs as possible to aid in
the defense of his sister divisions. More than one newscast from the planet
prominently featured the Uziel standing guard in front of Defiance’s mountain
entrances, so while the company as a whole is still spending most of their
resources on Hesperus II, the Furillo plant has been buried in orders for
their new ’Mech.
     Defiance produces one variant, a configuration based on their original
prototype that bears little resemblance to the primary model. The 2S mounts
paired standard PPCs and machine guns along with a Beagle Active Probe and the
Harvester SRM pack. It is only produced in limited quantities, but does give
potential customers the option of buying a powerful reconnaissance ’Mech.

==Deployment==
     Like just about every other BattleMech debuted during the Civil War, the
Uziel has found its way into dozens of different units, most of whom would
never have requested or received any in the first place. Quite a few have also
found their way into the Lyran Regulars regiments, though that is more by
accident than by intention.

the only real changes required were the downgrade of the engine to save mass, adding 2 heatsinks, and reducing the weapons appropriately. in Lv1 play it's 8 tons of armor is fairly typical, and it's firepower is impressive. you have to use a 2-1 fire pattern on the large lasers to avoid building up heat fast, but thats fairly typical for lv1.

this is harder than i thought it would be.
i had to reduce the 10 class gun to a 5 class, the ppcs are represented by two
large lasers. the medium lasers are most closely represented by, well, medium
lasers.
the speed is reduced one point, while the jump capacity stays as is.
the large lasers have one advantage over ppcs:
no minimum range, while the range is lower, this is only partially compensated
by the higher range of the AC5
as i had half a ton left i added a small laser in the head.

the mk0b has only 19 heat sinks, only one large laser but has a motion profile of 4/6/3

==Overview:==

  Designed by Vining Engineering and Salvage (VEST) as a simple tech downgrade of their high tech Valliant geared toward the poor stables on secondary and tertiary gaming worlds who cannot afford, nor support the cutting edge of battletechnology, much less the bleeding edge the Valiant V4-LNT-K1 has become an unexpected success.  The low purchase  price and use of commonly available parts have allowed both VEST and Irian Battlemechs to push the Valiant V4-LNT-K1 into new niche markets across the Inner Sphere.  Surprisingly the Valiant K1 model has found a secondary market adding a cheap and durable backbone to help protect more expensive high tech scouting units.

Explanation:
  This is a very, very simple downgrade, replace the DHS with Singles, and the 3 ERMLs with standard Mediums, strip out the MASC system all together with the tonnage going for a standard tech small laser and nearly maxed armor while keeping the hatchet as is.  The Valiant was always a fairly cheap and simple design, but this version strips that little bit of tech out.  My version is still fairly fast, with good close range punch and more armor, but does lose range and speed to the higher tech original.  I can see mine as a great lvl 1 bug killer in the 3020s, or even out in the edge of civilization in later years.  The Valiant K1 is faster, with better armor, and significantly more punch then Stingers and Wasps common even in the 3060s in the back of beyond.   This Valiant is also  much easier to repair then the average 3060s+ light mech while still being competitive against higher tech designs.

==Overview:==
The Bushwacker is known as one of the iconic Inner Sphere 'Mechs from the
later stages of the Clan invasion.  However the Bushwacker had actually been
in development for many years before the Clans ever appeared.  

In the late 3040's and early 3050's a handful of BSW-P1 "proof-of-concept"
prototypes were constructed, but these all suffered from numerous technical
problems that would eventually be inherited by the first BSW-X1 production
models.  As history shows, it was only in the early stages of the Clan
invasion that these faults would finally be corrected.  

==Capabilities:==
The BSW-P1 was never intended to be the final production version of the
Bushwacker.  It was, however, designed to mimic the capabilities of the
proposed final version as closely as possible.  As such great importance was
given to the weapons layout.  That being said, while the BSW-P1 had decent
firepower at range it had to alternate that fire to avoid overheating.  

Because the BSW-P1 lacked the BSW-X1's weight-saving technologies it suffered
from noticeably thin armor, and it also lacked CASE.  As a result these early
prototypes tended to fare poorly when tested in actual combat situations. 

In spite of all these issues, TharHes doggedly moved forward, convinced that
their investment would pay off through the application of new technologies. 
While this did come to pass (eventually), other critics have come to view the
development of the Bushwacker as yet another sordid example of the Lyran
military-industrial complex in action.

==Deployment==
Only a dozen BSW-P1 Bushwackers were produced.  By the time the BSW-X1 entered
service these early examples of the Bushwacker had either been destroyed in
combat or were retired to gather dust in scrapyards.
