I am ready to declare the Pug wheeled APC finished. Once I learn more about rendering and drawing more uneven surfaces like a fabric rucksack I may come back and do some more work to the Pug, but the vehicle itself is complete. Unless someone points out any glaring errors in it.

Outstanding ! Im curious as to how big is the model ? The reason I ask is that it would/should look cool done up in the new Shapeways offering... http://www.shapeways.com/materials/frosted_detail

To have it printed though in a usable scale, it would have to be solid inside

Again, great work 8)

Thanks RT for the complement! It means a lot to me coming from you and seeing what you've done with modeling programs.

That process looks really cool! The vehicle is about 4.5m x 9.5m x 3.8m. It can of course be scaled but I'm not sure if it is solid or not. The design has the crew compartment and infantry bay built into it but those are easily chopped out. I made it with Google Sketchup, but I don't know exactly how it models drawings. I can start with a flat surface and extrude it, I don't have to start with a 3d object but the program allows me to do so if I choose, if that helps answer your question.

glaring errors? no.
two remarks: the towing adaptors are nice, just when it is neccessary to tow the vee out of a ditch it drove in forward you would want some at the vehicles rear. same when the vee is used to tow another one.

second remark: the luggage carrier at the rear of the turret is relatively small, ur turret is much flatter than what you would find in todays MBTs, because of that the luggage carrier would have to be bigger relative to the turret. imagine ten soldiers would want to throw their backpacks into it.

I love that someone is doing stuff like this for fun! :D

Um: I don't see a lot of space between the rear door and the two seats in the middle column; I'd bet no one ever uses it, instead demanding the ramp be lowered, even when no one has much gear on.

I'm guessing you have some inline-6 to the right of the cab, and the ammo? The AC goes to the left?

Don't take this the wrong way, but why all the stuff on the slop below the leading edge? Seems like it'd all get damage or scraped off first time you go off-road. I get you'd want the tow points below the center of gravity, but they just seem like something to hang the whole truck up on with . . .

I . . . guess I have a mental block about the LRM: Feeding it through that post seems bad, and (being the so-and-so whom doesn't have time to do neat things like this himself) wish it could elevate some.

But the running lights and door handles . . . :o

I just realized something funny about it that you can put in the fluff as to why it's luggage carrier doesn't get used much. the backblast from the missile-launchers runs across it!

Now it REALLY fits in with battletech lore!

Seriously, that's some good looking APC!

Nice job...now for a couple of comments. You may want to look at things like SLAT Armor, aka the bird cage, that the Strykers use as well as a skirt around the wheel area, one or both would be things added after vehicle ships or after several loses to RPG like weapons. Then the back door area, is it just that single door or is a drop ramp combo like the 113 or Bradely and Strykers have?

You guys sure do know how to keep a guy on his toes. I guess I will go down the list. Karagin it has a rear ramp a la M113, I will post a pic of it partially down this evening if I can. I don't like the aesthetic of slate armor. Fair comment about the turret luggage rack Chainsaw, I've decided to box in that center section, you just better have gloves if you want to open the box shortly after using the LRM rack.

Goose both are fair criticisms of the Pug, I actually went back and forth about the LRM rack base, I like the narrower one but it would be difficult to load the through so I'm going to widen it. I moved the tow shackles down as well. Now for the front tool set, I've gone back and forth on that one too. Here you have a vehicle with 30 guys in it, they will need plenty of tools, but that set doesn't aesthetically fit in up front either. I don't want to hang anything on the sides, this thing is already 4.55m wide and the lading edge of the vehicle is over 2m high so they would have to climb onto top of the vehicle to get the tools. We'll see.

The Pug is a twin engine, gas-turbine generator, vehicle, with electric motors mounted in the hubs of the wheels. The engines are on either side of the crew compartment, thus the location of the air intake and exhaust grates. Most of the turret equipment is located within the turret ring/column underneath the turret. The space off to the right of the turret is for other vehicle equipment such as battery banks etc.

coba, good call. The Pug needs rear tow shackles. But the turret is remote control, the low profile is something I wanted. There's plenty of space to hange packs from, etc. that's what those side rails are for.

I'll post some more pics this evening.

is there space for the tools inside the vee? under the seats maybe? over the seats, just above the crews heads? behind the outer seats, above the wheels?( id like to c a cross section of the crew compartment ;) )

where you have put the front set of tools, could you make two flat compartments behind that two panels between the towing shackles? in such a compartment the tools would be protected form bushes and stuff.

(A smart guy would have said this by now) Look at this illo: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/10 ... est_page_2

It shows some of the more important issues in off road design. The HMMVV also reflects some others, going even farther for ground clearance, then addressing center of gravity, but your Pug has to have a high roof, with a ton of weight on the roof, so not much help for it. (I'd heard the new mine-deflecting vehicles have almost no off-road capability, and many were surprised by this fact, but I have no links on it.)

Anyway: You probably want to change the lower leading edge of your Pug. Give it more slope, raise it's lower edge, move said edge farther back, and expose more of the tire . . .

I did pay attention to that Goose. Approach angle for the Pug is 45 degrees and it has 0.9m of ground clearance. I'm not changing the hull lines on this thing. I have a few concepts with the wheels set out like you suggest Goose but I didn't like the look of it for the Pug.

There's a ton of room, er 4 tons of room in the infantry compartment so there is a lot internal space but I wanted something give the vehicle some exterior detail.

The latest generation MRAPs, the M-ATV is off-road capable.

Uhmm Goose you heard wrong, the MATVs are decent on off road, it is the MRAPs that are top heavy and have issues, mainly from the extra armor the Army loves to put on them. Off road ability is not something a military vehicles is going to be the best at, it is not an all terrain vehicle first it is a troop or weapons platform, everything else is secondary. Also no vehicle is going to be doing it's best in rocky hilly terrain like say in Afghanistan or sandy desert like found in North Africa and parts of the mid-East.
