So: When you have ships capable of 30g burns, it's easy for them to change their vector, then flip, to fire the primaries, as they are all basically forward-firing?

Homeworld wasn't really all that great at forcing units to move as though engine placement mattered . . .

They used the term "foundered" and we have only been shown HEAVY damage to it. Until we are shown rubble or they say it is destroyed I will not believe it is destroyed. Badly damaged and never going to move again? Yes. Destroyed with all hands? It doesn't look like it to me yet. For the size of the explosion, I could see a large amount of the vessel still there. And the loss of signal looks more like jamming or EMP ripping the signal apart, especially since the people are still seen in the picture as it fades out. The Loroi build their ships TOUGH from the look of it. I think at least some of the crew lives, if not happy at the doing so.

Er: No.

From what I remember reading over there, this fleet is made of glass jaws: Big engines, half-way descent guns, short on armor.

I also think this page is the first successful attempt to depict a language barrier.

That came out wrong …

Thought: We see the captain and whomever cover there heads not becouase they felt the thing go off, but because someone near the engine screamed psyonically, and everyone else did the reflexive duck'n cover …

Thanks for continuing to follow the comic through its slow points. You guys are hardcore.

I chose "founder" because it means to sink or fail utterly, without direcly referencing obvious seafaring terms. So yeah, I did mean that Winter Tide is a total loss. But if it's not 100% clear, that's okay; they are aliens talking, after all.

While I wouldn't characterize the Loroi ships as glass cannons, they're certainly less robust than their Umiak counterparts. Even so, Winter Tide would have survived if they'd been able to get the reactor under control.

Something tells me they are about to ask a certain "Defender of the Garden" if they can kill his ship so they can get the heck out of Dodge. And of course if they do AND if the Umiak have brains they will record such a destruction and transmit it to the Terrans in an effort to get the Terrans on their side. This could be...interesting...

The timing is too tight for that, Med: I expect Stillstorm to take the whole 51st on this jont to the tanker, at the lest. If Alex changes ship, the 51st goes home to rearm. If not, we have our new "Captain" trying to talk them out of bringing the whole fleet into Human space … As it could conquer all the planets at once. If they bring just Tempest, then Stillstorm has to chose between shelling one planet and demanding surrender, or taking the time to overrun each planet individually …

Now: There is still the wildcard of the other scout running around, but I don't see ether side doing diplomacy near Terra: They meet each other there, they glass Terra and end the story for our purposes. No: We get a chapter or two of Alex and the crew of the Tempest driving to Terra, then Humans BS'in' Loroi into not subjugating them …

After that, I guess we see Alex driving proper BBs, demonstrating something like "innovative human tactics" …

All of which doesn't make Fireblade a star of the show, nor address the Umiak's new "stealth" tech (though, Loroi needing human tactics to cover the over reliance on precog/ telepathy seems to be the future).

The bracketed sections are being stressed with an unusually stilted voice. The Umiak is speaking Trade through the means of a mechanical translator; the only sort of punctuation the Umiak language has is when a section of text is marked as being especially relevant (article here for anyone who's bored), and that's what the bold/italic sections represent. The brackets are added just for effect, to add to the sense of weird/mechanical/alien speech patterns.

Let's not forget that Bellarmine was split apart by green beam and umiak ships shoot those. Of course colour of the beam could been faked, but then umiak officer could be talking trash just to make some confusion. Now the very interesting thing is, what WERE those thoughts if I'm accurate...

Because...well...I'm wondering if the jamming just cut out...and if it just cut out, when the ship went boom, their are two options.

The Terran ship was jamming their farseeing process.
The bad little insects were jamming the farseeing process and cut it when the Terran ship went boom to make the girls think it was the Terrans jamming them.

Either way, if the jamming just ended, a certain Terran could be in trouble very soon...

Well, they wanted him off the bridge badlly enough to touch him, so there he goes, back to detention.

I was going to say that was the Grand PoBa of Sensors talking with Stillstorm (about what would have been obvious and intuitive), but that's actually the XO "yelling" about the bridge needing cleaning.

So Our Hero has already seen them fight Tempest, so letting him watch maneuvers at this point should be a non-event. It could be paranoia about him reading the gauges, so they don't want to lay in a course someplace important with him right there, even if they were thinking about giving him a map to get back to "his" tender.

I'm still betting they are going to jump down his throat about the mental ECM, as it ether stopped when the bug with the +2 IQ points cut the signal, or else when the Bellarmine got converted to a gas.

That would be a real problem, as since we can assume there was no power generation up in the bow, then it means the Loroi are allergic to something on-board … even though there was a hard vacuum in the way.

What gets me is the looks aimed at him. The bridge crew wanted him GONE and were NOT HAPPY with him being there ANYMORE AT ALL.

The "talky girl" has always been nice to him, whether or not it is an act, so her acting worried for him to get him off RIGHT NOW is not a surprise and fits with how she has acted. And frankly I think she is not being untruthful. The author may decide to make it something else, but nothing she's done has flickered me "Danger Will Robinson" sensors in her way.

The one that REALLY gets me is the guard. HIS guard. The lady that has never looked at him with anything short of contempt. SHE grabbed him by the arm too, and gave him a look that is something like "trust me" and "worried for you." And THEN as they were walking out she glared at the bridge.

Something just happened, something that pissed off the bridge crew, and something that caused the guard to stop worrying about what HE would do but what might be DONE to him. I think. She seems to have changed from being the person guarding the ship from him to guarding HIM. At least in that moment. I don't know if it will last. She's never liked him.

But...I'm impressed.

Oh frak. What if they can read HIS thoughts now? If the mental jamming just cut out, can they read him now? And if so, is the bridge crew REALLY as angry with him as a person as it seems, or are they angry with his race in general? And did the guard and talky girl both decide it was high time to get him out of dodge because they KNEW he had no guilt at all?

I got to say, one thing I love about this comic is HOW GOOD the guy draws expressions. In general, the quality makes this worth the wait between pages...

I'm please we get to see these details: It'll be interesting to see if he tries to get Fireblade to speak. She'll probable just say something about how it's her job to kill him if he sees the wrong thing, and I think he's still picking the axe he wants to grind about the interrogation thing, but I think we're going to get a scene where he's on an elevator (again) and he just "snaps" and talks to her. I precive he's really only supposed to talk to Beryl and Tempo, and anything else will get him read the Riot Act.

But all the early promos and fan art made Fireblade out to be a major character, so …

Nah. She's more like covergirl. We've seen it elsewhere: book has pretty woman/girl in cover and main character is a man. Manga & anime Black Lagoon comes to mind: Revy Two-Hand in cover of two manga volumes and opening of the anime, but real lead character is Rock.

First chapter is done now. When first pages were posted in 2001, it took 10 years to get this far. With seven chapters more coming, it will take 60 years more. Or not: it is stated that each chapter is about 50 pages. But chapter 1 is 74 pages! (minus the prologue)
