Fluff-Kell Hounds-flufffluff-Sensor Despensor-flufffluff-access to Lyran-think Quad chassiss-flufffluff-Speed.

A Medium Quad with 5 MPs, 8 points of Standard Stealth, a Remote Sensor Dispenser and a non-configurable MG turret with one full magazine of ammo. For 424kCb, you get that `60mpt' speed (:-],) an armor rateing of 9/7/7/7, a TS Mod of 0, one point of AP and a +2 STR.

The sensors (off the top of my head:) You get six that you can drop any old way you fell like (more than one to a hex, etc.,) and any unit with a Beagle, C3 Master, and I think the Command Couch and the Sat Uplink (all of which have to be `in range' of some kind,) can get a feed of whatz happanin'. Thus they are cheep pickets, or the `guy' who says `when' for an ambush . . .

Daeceg: Drooling is Good!

Oh: That's a `normal,' 'Mech-scale MG . . .

So how much for the Design sheets on this thing Goose? HJHI has been looking to expand into Battle Armor and this looks like a good place to start. :D

No, that's Full Contact RISK. There's plenty of rugby players who are willing, but I've not yet found a big enough map. ;)

You can see the rough outline for fluff in the first post. Now, what can you do with it?

OK, kids: Y'all know how baddly I write fluff. But I'm trying anyway, and want to hear your feedback. If anybody also has any info on who builds what out on Arc-Royal, I'm all ears . . .
Code:
Classic BattleTech Battle Armor Technical Readout
                            VALIDATED

Type/Model: Black Lab Std
Tech/Era: Inner Sphere / 3067
Chassis Type: Quad
Weight Class: Medium Battle Armor (751 - 1,000 kg)
Rules: Level 2, Standard design

Ground Speed: 54.0 km/h
Armor Type: Standard Stealth

==Overview:==
The Kell Hounds were attending a LCAF Day event, where the new
Fenrir was on display. It's pilot showed great enthusiasm for the
unit, sighting it's firepower and speed. When asked about it's
armor weight and sensor signature, the pilot shrugged and told the
mercs that "too small and fast" too take much incoming fire.

The Hounds' present for this declaration were under whelmed by the
pilots response.

Two years later, The Kells manufacturing concern started to test
the prototype Black Lab Quad Battle Armor Suit. While not
originally intended to be direct rebuttal of the Fenrir, the
introduction of the Sensor Dispenser early on in the development
cycle forced a drastic reduction in the offensive goals for the
design. Despite accusations of "mission creep," the revised specs
were accepted at the highest internal levels. It was felt that the
ability to hustle a Dispenser along at 55 k/ph and avoid detection
doing so was of far higher strategic significance than to merely
re-armor a Fenrir.

==Capabilities:==
The armor weight was almost an after-thought. The original design
called for slightly less to allow for the mass of a small laser,
but once the Dispenser was installed, there was no room for more
than a single machine gun with only its' internal ammo load. The
leftover weight was shunted into armor.

The use of Soft Paw Stealth armor on the unit was one of the first
decisions made about the design. While most battle armor rely on
the enemy to have only a certain level of alertness, the use of
stealth armor forces the enemy troops to be prepared for an
immanent attack to even have a chance of spotting a unit so
equipped.

I like it, Goose. In general, I dislike the whole concept of quad battle armor, but I rather like this design. :-)

I like the design a good fast scout well designed for its mission profile. And Goose you are SEVERLY underestemating your fluff writing skills It looks to me like a rather good job here.Clear concise and to the point,You do not have to write a novel to have good fluff

I think Motown is right Goose, the fluff is good and I also agree with Maverick about quad BA, I don't like it. IMO they're just tiny battery powered IS protomechs. But I do like this little guy. I can just see a platoon doing a wide recon sweep on a flank. They have enough speed to evade most stuff if need be and their size and stealth armor keeps their ops very low key. I like it. So are the Kells selling it to some of the farm team merc units? :D

I'm still trying to imagine what quad BA looks like. No offense to TPTB, but I think the Fenrir looks ... unlikely. The point about the original elemental BA was that there was this (admittedly honking big) guy inside it. How does that work with a quad? Answer already pointed out ... they're just small IS protos.

Mind you, small IS protos aren't a bad thing.

Why is the Fenrir unlikely? The guy lays down, feet towards the ass, head towards the head.

Its not a bad design, I rather like it as far as quads go(even though i dont really like quads). The only thing I dont like is the name.

Maybe if the Fenrir were large enough, or maybe thats just how the fenrir is operated....

But if you read your companion, on page 230 it says:
Quote:
The quad designs introduced by the Inner Sphere operate more like a conventional vehicle, though the warrior is actually lying perpendicular to the ground in the suit.
Of course, they say perpendicular when im hoping they mean parallel....

The concept of this seems mighty fine, I can see these things as bloodhounds and such leaving marks for their masters to follow.

How about calling it the Greyhound? It's a dog breed known for hunting and speed and to my knowledge the name isn't used in the canon.

Here are some potential variants of the Black Lab. For the past few days I've been thinking about the idea of using quad BAs as scouts to supplement or actually replace mechs in some units. The more I think about it the more I like it. I think a mixed platoon of these Black Labs would make great scouts for a battalion of 'mechs.

Well, that's cool too, but I should point out that I started with the Sensor Despensor not effecting the movement of quads, then I added the Obligatory Stealth Armor (ever wonder why we have so little debate on PA doctrine?), then just droped in the MG. The idea was to run around as fast as possable, laying eggs, and ether avoid contact, or survive evading said contact.

I like the way you are thinking, but I don't think the sensor model would replace a unit big enough to carry a real BAP.

The ECM one: For the most part I just don't like ECM on a BA. Even if it had worth-wile range (which it doesn't,) ECM seems like a `kick me' sign on so fragial a unit . . .

BA ECM and Probes aren't great weapons, I'll admit that. But they do offer some possibilities and nothing says the ECM units have to be on all the time. I think they would be used when the stuff hits the fan so to speak to cover a quick retreat.

I think a mixed squad of 2 of your remote sensors Labs and one each of these 2 new variants would be make a good team. Technically you can't mix different types of BA in squads but I don't think a house rule allowing it would be too munchie.

And I shouldn't have said the labs would replace recon mechs. But they certainly can support then by covering areas where the mechs would be at a disadvantage say in built up areas and woods.

With the labs have 5MP and have no need to change faces since they are infantry I think they could be a great supplement to recon forces.

And I think it is time to start a thread on BA design and tactics. :D
